I saw a sudden surge in the number of people visiting my blog lately and I realised that SPM results were just released on 23/03/2011. On 26th March, I had the highest number of people visiting my blog in a day for this year, a total of 1300 people. Since the 2010 SPM result is the best in 5 years( it seem to be getting better every year!!), I am sure almost all the top scorers wants to become a doctor, without realising what is in store for them. Probably in another 10 years, we will have the smartest students in the world with everyone scoring 10As!! What a joke! It use to be only 2-10 students scoring 8/9As in each state those days . Either our students are getting smarter day by day or our standards are dropping drastically? I think it is the latter.
In order to make it easier for the students to read my articles, please go to my page :”For Future Doctors” . Please also read all the comments in each of the postings. You can also read some of my articles here:

Owh thank you very much for this information… Somehow some of the articles demotivates me to become a doctor (littlebit).. I will be interviewed by MARA scholarship for medicine but I really hope on getting it…
I wanna be a great doctor one day! Thanks again
The articles is to tell you about the reality on the ground. If you can take up the challenge then go ahead.
Good afternoon, doctor .I am a spm candidate for spm 2019. I’ve got 8As ,1 B+(chinese),and 1 B(addmaths). My father decide to let me study in matriculation to become a doctor while my friends suggest me to become a chemist since it is easier. Can i have some advise from doctor? Oo, and is my results good enough to become a doctor?
Your results are fine, the question is the standard of our SPM. When 9000 students can score straight “A”s, i do not know the value of our SPM anymore!
I think you should spend some time reading this blog from A to Z. IN the end it is up to you but medicine is no more a guaranteed job or money making business.
Good day to you doctor,
My daughter scored 10 A1, 1 A2 and 1 B3 in her SPM. She did’nt get any scholarship. So we sent to UCSI university in cheras for A Level course. She scored AAA (bio, chemistry and maths). Her ambition is to become a doctor. But with current situation I dont want to take risk. Can doctor recommend any other better courses for her further study which will make her life better in future. Please advice.
Thanks & best regards,
Vella
10A1 and no scholarship? Malaysian style. Your daughter seem to be a bright student but does she know what being a doctor means? Please ask her to read my blog especially my ” For Future Doctors” series. Many of them do not realise what is ahead of them when they choose medicine. You are right about the future propect of being a doctor as you would have read in the newspaper yesterday. You need to ask your daughter what she is interested in, other than being a doctor. Biotechnology, Oil and Gas engineering, Network engineers , Dentistry are some of the fields which are in demand. Dentistry may be a good option and she can progress on to become a oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
I am a 2011 spm leaver as well n scored 8As n 1B. And of course not surprisingly to u i wanna be a doctor as well. But the problem arised 2 and a half months ago when i had to go through a spine surgery due to scoliosis and right now i am kinda not really prepared 2 go to college eventhough i was before the surgery. I decided to take up stpm but then my parents are forcing me to take up a foundation programme in utar. Could you please give a little bit of your thought on my case over here doctor. PLSSSS.
It is up to you to make the decision. To me, STPM is better to try to get into a public university. FYI, UTAR is yet to be accredited by MMC. Pls check their website on the number of lecturers they have!!
Dr, can a person with moderate red-green colourblindness study medicine (in local or private universities in malaysia)? I have seen colourblind doctors but they’re doing well too, and yet some people says colourblind people are not suitable for a job in the medical field. What do you think? Much obliged. 🙂
You can still proceed but limitation will come when you want to specialize.
doctor can i be a doctor by just having 5 credits
Sorry, you can’t
dr paga,
have u read about new chinese uni to be open in salak tinggi with meds school….?
I know about the opening but nothing much about med school. Will wait until they are here!
wat should i get 2 b qualified
I think you should spend more time reading this blog. Please read MMC website on minimum qualification criteria http://mmc.gov.my/v1/docs/MY%20Entry%20criteria%2020120911%20Adopted.pdf
Sir , i wanted to ask will private hospital hire those medical students from russia or they will just leave it aside because of quality problem ??? is it medical studies in russia too notorious ??
Private hospitals DO NOT hire any housemen. Few MOs are hired to run the emergency department.
Ok thanks for your reply …. then will private hospital still hire specialized doctor who got their degree in russia ???? For example , an orthopedic doctor who got their mbbs in malaysia and an orthopedic doctor who got their md in russia go for an interview … will the interviewer has a preconception with russia-graduate’s doctor ???? i m really curious about it , my dad say all the private hospital dun1 russia-graduate’s doctor TT
Once you are a specialist, only your specialist degree counts. BUT, to get into specialist Master’s training is the difficult part
Sir , can i undergoes MO service at government hospital and specialist master’s training at the same time ??? or have to complete 2 yrs housemanship n 3 yrs MO onli n allow to further undergo master degree ??
You should spend more time reading this blog! Answers are there. You can only apply for MAsters after 1 year of MO service
BTW< by the time you graduate, there will be surpluss of doctors. Preference will be given to government scholars and public uni graduates. The rest would just have to wait. Your Master's waiting period will also be longer
oooouu , thx you sir . How about Aimst ???? Do you prefer me to undergo MBBS at AIMST ???
AIMST is OK.
MRCP/MRCS = Master’s training ??????
Sry , this question may be stupid …..
You should read this blog more
Hi there, I would like to inquire, I scored 3A* in my recent A-Levels examination. I got tow offers to continue my medical degree, one is at IMU at the other is is Newcastle Medicine Malaysia. Where do you think is a better choice?
I would prefer IMU since they are more established. The twinning program would be better.
Sir, If i fail to enter local universities to study medicine, do you think it is still wise for me to do medicine in private universities? since you dont think the private universities are good….
Choose the right private uni. I would suggest IMU, PMC or Monash.
Dr,is that our Malaysian government offers JPA scholarship to pursue MBBS in overseas ? If Im not mistaken an announcement has been made in 2011 that SPM achievers are no longer eligible to be offered JPA scholarship ,hw far is it true Doctor ?
Yes, but till 2011, students were still sent by JPA to UK.
Thanks doctor 🙂
Hello, im about to become spm leaver this month, i planned to pursue my study in medicine. Im hoping to get a scholarship especially from JPA. However my main concern is my race. My father is chinese while my mother is a bumiputera. As a sarawakian i am consider as non bumiputera. What is my chance to get a scholarship from jpa?
Wait for your result
JPA is eligible after your pre-university studies and JPA will only send their scholars to the 10 selected universities in the world for medicine after your pre-university studies (that’s if you are selected by the university) . So, for now, concentrate in your study.
The days of getting a JPA scholarship after the SPM is over. You now have to get admitted into a top 10 University after an appropriate pre-U to be elligible. And even then, be warned, they have turned down people who got into Medicine in Cambridge, because they have stop giving scholarships for Medicine, period. Reason? Too many doctors already.
Hi Genevieve, if you plan to study medicine, you need to plan early. If your parent can afford to standby some money say, 150K, then you continue to study A-Level after your SPM in January. Do not wait for your SPM result. It’ll be too late. If your SPM result is 9A+ and above, you will already get a scholarship for your A-Level and if your A-Level result is good as well, then try to apply all the top universities as listed in the JPA website. JPA will continue to sponsor your study in the top universities which must be listed under the JPA schedule, irrespective of race. This is based on actual case for this year’s student. If your parent cannot afford to standby 150K to send you to private university to study medicine, then by all means, you need to get into the local Matrikulasi course to stand a chance to compete for a place in our local public university. If your race is classified under C, then you need to at least score minimum 8A+ in the SPM to get a place for Matrikulasi. If your race is under category I, then 4A+ and above will do. This is based on this year’s intake. Since, you are a Sarawakian, your chances to get into local IPTA’s medicine is much better than the West Malaysian. The reason I ask you to standby 150K is b’cos, it is very difficult to get a place for medicine overseas in those top universities as listed in the JPA schedule. Then at least you have a plan B to fall back. With 150K standby, plus another PTPTN loan of 150K, you still have chance to study medicine in some of the local IPTS if your plan A doesn’t work out. Then you can fulfil your dream to become a doctor. If you read through most of the others’ suggestion, they tend to discourage you from studying medicine, irrespective of your passion and dream. God Bless!
This year and next year is different. This year was an election year and everything will be entertained. Next year will be different. It happens each time an election comes.
Thanks for the suggestion. Apparently, no. My parents are both working for the government. It is quite difficult to raise about 150k for me to study. The other reason i need scholarship is that im the first child in the family. My parents need to afford my sisters’ education too. Matrikulation is my last choice to be honest. It is quite discouraging to hear that a lot of the students failed to enter local universities even with their good results. One of my friend’s sister is under jpa, also a non bumi had several rayuans before managed to receive a scholarship from jpa even with her 9As result. She was shocked to find out some of the med students sponsored by jpa , of course bumi , didnt got straight As.
@ Genevieve, since your parent couldn’t raise 150K, my opinion is that you should concentrate on your SPM to get a place in Matrikulasi, eventhough this is your last choice. Everything in Malaysia have political motive behind, even in education. Our government seems to have a look East policy now as East Malaysia states ensure them victory in every election. Since you are a Sarawakian, your chances in IPTA through the Matrikulasi path is very good. Do not ever try to attempt STPM. Not only it is tough, even if you get straight A and CGPA 4.0 flat also no use. The best you can get is Veterinary Science and a high percentage of them ended up in Universiti Kelantan this year. Preference of choice is always given to Matrikulasi student first. All this data feedback is based on this year only. Just like Dr. P said, every year the policy change, depends on next year political situation. Even teaching Maths and Science in English or Malay also changes every five years since Dr.M’s time until now. An elderly teacher once told me, if you walk into a Form 5 class room last year, every student, no matter whatever race also can answer a question fluently in English. He can already see apparent changes beginning this year. The government spend millions now only for the benefit of teachers to learn English grammar. Future generation is going to suffer as student definitely lack English communication skill.
If money is an issue, then Matrik should be your FIRST choice. It is the easiest way into IPTA, and the easiest pathway to score good results. You will get priority over STPM students, even with lower results.
In any case, there is already an administrative order in Sarawak, where when one parent is a bumi, the children are deemed bumis. However, many authorities, especially IPTA in West Msia do not recognise or execute that order.
Well if thats the only way, maybe i should consider matrik. However, if my parents decided to send me to IPTS, which one would be the best to study medicine?
$150k (parent fund) + $150k PTPTN = $300k can be tight for taking up medicine in west Malaysia because as far as I know some of the cheapest fee among medical schools are ranging from $220k to $250k ( 2 years ago) and now the fee could be higher. How about cost of living for 5 years on your own away from home plus other contingencies? Maybe $180k to 200k (parent fund) would be better.
dr can i apply for medicine ah..??im got 8As in spm.. but then bio i juz got B+..so hw doctor..??
Check the MMC website for the minimum requirement.
Hi. I’m waiting for my SPM results. Can you share a bit on dentistry perhaps?
It would be a great help.
Dentistry in government sector facing the same problem but dentist are still needed in Malaysia, especially in rural areas.
Then if I get 10A(8A+and 2A),can I take matrikulasi for dentistry, how big is the chance?
Ps. I am a non bumiputera
Well, no one can say for sure!
Hi sir…i got 5a 2b 2c in spm….i want to become a doctor…and im confused what to do nw….can u help me? can u give me any choice ?? tq sir !!!
You have to decide for yourself. Read this blog to know about the life of being a doctor and the current situation
Gd evening dr. I’ve gotten B+ for Bio, B for Chem, Phy, and D for add maths . Overall i got 6 As and ive done Foundation in Science.Im planning to do dentistry. Is that ok for me to enrol?
Should not be a problem I guess
Hi Dr, I am a PT3 student just 15 years old and I am very eager to study medical. I m studying in SMKP SRI AMAN. Do I need to do A levels or Foundation in Science? Is Manipal Medical University (Malaka) the right place for me to study. I am already working hard and smart to score straight A+ in SPM so I am eligible to get a scholarship.
Please spend some time reading this blog from A to Z. The answers are all there.
Dr , is pharmacist going to be over saturated in the next 5 years ? I’m still pursue ing my SPM this year .
Yes, for government sector but not yet in private sector.
thank you for ur reply , Dr . Is there any possibilities to be jobless in the next 5 years after I had graduated from AIMST ?
No one will know for sure!
Dr., Is there any possibilities to be jobless in the next 5 years as a fresh graduated pharmacist ?
In government sector, likely yes
Dr, do you think it will be shortage of doctor after 10 or 15 years?
NO one will know. If the current rate of production continues, we will have surplus by 2017. But many colleges may close down and many will realise that job is not guaranteed. Demand may drop. However, most of the doctors being produced now are still young and will continue to serve till another 40 years. So, the production must reduce after 2017. Jobs can never be guaranteed.
Greetings, doctor. I’m a science stream student and would be sitting for my SPM this year. I have been very passionate in science and have always wanted to be a doctor since I was young and would like pursue my further studies in science as well. However I’m in a dilemma in choosing which pre-university programme I should take. Some colleges that I consulted said it would be better to take A-levels rather than taking SACE.I’m planning to start college life next January before my SPM results are announced. It would be great if you could enlighten me on this. Thanks 🙂
A level is well recognised internationally
Comparing A-levels and Foundation in science at IMU, which do you think is better ?
A level is always better as it more well recognised. Foundation is only recognised by the said university
Is stpm or matriculation better to ensure a place in medical field?
sir what about pharmacist ? it is a good choice
Depends. The post in government sector is almost full but we still need a lot of pharmacist in private sector
Hi sir.. i’m 2016 SPM’s candidate. I read some of your articles, do gave me a lil bit courage to enter the medical world. But, just one thing that always hold me back that, Im scared with the blood, kind of like a fobia. But still, I love about human body and hospital surroundings. And I’m quite scare about the work opportunity since the number of doctors in malaysia is increasing tremendously.. Just wanna ask you whether you hv met someone who scared with blood but still carry the subject and be a doc.. I realised the articles were wrote a few years ago. yet still, I hope you saw this and reply to me. Thank you.
If you are scared of blood, than no point doing medicine . You will be taking blood and seeing blood everywhere for almost everyday in your life. You can buy my books and read for further information
Hi sir , among AIMST ,Melaka Manipal Medical College and Mahsa , which one is the better uni to study mbbs ? Thank you for your reply in advance . I really need your guidance at the moment .
You can check the MQA rating for the higher ranking college
Thank you for your reply doctor. Is it means that I can trust the MQA rating for the Universities’ quality or just as a reference?
Just a reference
Thank you very much doctor. Best wishes to you.😁
