I received this SMS from a friend of mine and I must say it made my day.
” Took a friend to DIGI yesterday. ” I am from US. Can I get a line?” Girl looked intensely at the passport, finally: “U amreeka ke US?” Tell me ….. should I laugh or cry”.
As i said earlier, this is the effect of screwing up our education for the last 25 years, when UMNO started influencing the education system. Education should never been politicised.
We have Geography and History books that have been manipulated so that the students will not know anything else other than the great UMNO’s achievements and ketuanan crap. Do you know that the students nowadays do not read any other history of the world!! BTW , the history of Malaya starts only from the time Parameswara steps his foot on Malacca!
The only other history they read other than Malaysia’s, is history of Islam (tamadun Islam) which takes about 5 out of 10 chapters for SPM! I can bet you that they won’t even know who is Abraham Lincoln, Hitler, Stalin etc etc. I don’t understand why they have to bring religious civilization into the syllabus. If so what happen to the Christian empire, Hindu Empire etc etc.
This is what I call, manipulation of the young’s mind to benefit the ruling party! Please read the history of Nazi’s, you will see the similarities. Gob Bless.
Dear Dr. Pgalavan, I agree with you, the result of our education system being manupulated by politicians can be seen today. I know of some university graduates unable to write a proper letter in English. And some of the graduates are being employed by international companies which need someone with good comman of English in order to communicate with their counterparts globally. So don’t blame why the unemployment rate is 1 in 4 among university graduates.
Greetings Dr Pagalavan,
The ‘Text Message’ has made my day as well :D.
I am a Pharmacist currently in a Government University. It is sad over here…The employment ratio is utterly pathetic! In the whole school, there is only 1 Indian, 1 Chinese who speaks excellent English! The rest are Malayu. Yes all of them! None of them can speak 1 full sentence of English without bringing Melayu in! All they’re good at is the morning breakfast at 9am, lunch at 12noon and tea break at 4pm. Its like that’s the only time they’re really ecstatic! I feel so disappointed being caught up in this situation..Even clear & simple instruction cannot be understood, I have to always translate in Melayu! huft!!!~ I pity the future of this nation…
You cant blame on them about their english. Yes, english is very important. But why not we as Malaysian use Bahasa Melayu? If we dont, who else gonna speak in Bahasa Melayu? Korea can be a successful country even their people cant speak in english. I am proud with Bahasa Melayu eventhough I’m not a Malay. I bet your Bahasa Melayu grammar is very bad even you’re Malaysian who should write and speak Bahasa Melayu well. Then, you still judge people by their English, not Bahasa Melayu, just because you use english, shame on you. Be better on Bahasa Melayu first. The Indians and Chinese, of course, do speak fluently in english because it is their daily language but Malays dont. So, we cant blame on them too as we also dont do well in Bahasa Melayu, right? But your opinion is true too. If the education is in english, then the student should understand the language. The Malays cant understand english good enough because during their school days, they dont study well for the subject. If they do well, surely they can speak english fluently. I know a lot of Malays out there can speak and write very good in english. Not all Malays dont know english.
How do you know that our Bahasa Melayu is not good? We are smart enough so we are fully capable of mastering two languages at once. Many Chinese and Indians do not speak English at home but yet can speak fluent Bahasa Melayu, English and their mother tongue. In fact when I was in school, the Malays are not even getting As in their Bahasa Malaysia. Many of them may be better in speaking and using the language on a daily basis but that is not a good measure of their Bahasa Melayu grammar nor vocabulary. .A good command of English is vital in the tertiary level especially in the Maths and Science fields because most of these courses are taught in English. Unfortunately unlike Korea, our technology/scientific research is not advanced to the level of self-sufficiency so we need to learn from the discoveries of mostly English-speaking nations.
