I was really laughing my head off after reading this article in today’s Star. Coming from our Deputy Prime Minister makes me wonder the type of politicians that are running this country. I am sure many knows the answer to that?
Firstly, this is a publicity stunt my the medical college mentioned. Secondly, all speech by politicians are written by the inviting body. Basically it means that the speech was written by the college mentioned and then sent to the respective VIP’s political secretary for vetting purposes. I myself have written a speech for the Minister of Health who suppose to come to officiate a SCHOMOS gathering way back in 2006. That’s how our politicians work. I was made to understand that only Dr Maharthir writes his own speech when he was the PM!
Obviously, our DPM do not know what he was talking about during the launch of the so-called “medical education fund”. WE have almost 34 medical schools with some producing 2 batches of graduates ( 1 local and 1 twinning). The said college is one of the college which has 2 parallel programmes running , 1 twinning with Indonesia and another giving UKM degree.
Just look at the number of medical schools below:
1) University Malaya (UM)
2) UNiversiti Kebangsaa n Malaysia (UKM)
3) Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)
4) Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)
5) UiTM
6) University Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM)
7) Universiti Darul Iman
8) UNiversiti Sarawak Malaysia (UNIMAS)

14) SEGI University College
15) Allianze College of Medical Sciences (ACMS): 2 programmes
16) Penang Medical College (PMC)
17) Mahsa University College
18) Masterskills University College of Health Sciences
19) Royal College of Medicine Perak (UNIKL) : 2 programmes
20) Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA)
21) Newcastle University Malaysia
22) Perdana University : Graduate Medical School
23) Perdana University : RCSI
24) Inssaniah University College

34) Lincoln University College( started 2011)
35) University Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia ( started 2009)
I was informed that the number of new housemen this year is reaching almost 4000. That is when half of the medical schools above are yet to produce their graduates. The report in Star today confirms one thing: the ratio is already 1: 900 ( 2011). So, how long do you think it will take for us to achieve 1: 600? I presume before 2015, much faster than 2020 that was predicted before.
After that you will be privileged to get a job . You will be told to shut your mouth and take a pay cut. I just saw some poor souls who have been recruited by a new medical school. Surprisingly, some of them are from our neighbouring country who was told that their degree will be recognised by their home country since the university is a branch campus offering the same degree! They were also told that their degree is recognised by GMC. Unfortunately, I have to break the bad news to them. Up to today, Singapore Medical Council is yet to recognise Monash University Malaysia, so what makes them to believe that they will recognise this university? These students also thought that Malaysia will offer them housemanship, it seems they were told by the university?
I really pity these students who will be caught in a limbo in 5 years time.
Med students need sponsors
KUALA LUMPUR: There are not enough public scholarships and education loans to sponsor Malaysian students who qualify to do medical degrees, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.
Apart from limited places in universities, Muhyiddin said many students were unable to pursue their dreams in the field due to the high cost of medical education.
“Public scholarships and education loans provided by the Government through the Public Service Department, National Higher Education Fund Corporation and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), are not enough to meet the high demand,” Muhyiddin said in his speech at the launch of the Allianze University College of Medical Sciences (AUCMS) medical education fund yesterday.
All smiles: Muhyiddin chatting with some of the medical students of AUCMS at the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Muhyiddin, who is also the Education Minister, urged more private institutions of higher learning to join the Government in its effort to produce more medical graduates in the country.
The event held at the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia here was witnessed by AUCMS president Datuk Dr Zainuddin Md Wazir and vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohammad Abd Razak.
Muhyiddin said the doctor to patient ratio of one to 900 in Malaysia had yet to reach the World Health Organisation standard of one to 600.
At an earlier function, he advised civil servants to have a sense of urgency in understanding the needs of the people and executing them fast.
“The rakyat is monitoring and evaluating our efforts. Any negligence by us will result in the public service being evaluated negatively and considered irrelevant to the country’s development,” he said.
Hi doctor ^.^
I need some opinion here.I am offered MBBS at University Sabah Malaysia,as well as Perdana University.
Which university is better ?
Really hope for some suggestions as I am in deep dillema right now.
I would pesonally prefer a public university
i agree, go UMS. I have a bad feeling about Perdana.
Hi doctor pagalavan 🙂 Is there any different between study medicine(mbbs) in malaysia and oversea? Which is better?
Depends on which university you are talking about. NOT all university overseas are good.
If compare penang medical college and imu with twinning to university of Leeds or university of Manchester . Which is better?
I would prefer IMU twinning
For wider recognition of your degree, IMU-PMS program would better, IMO.
The IMU-PMS twinning is a better idea than the other because the second 2.5 years would be spent in UK. I believe that this would entail one to be eligible to apply for the Foundation Programme in UK (ie housemanship). Not only that, you would be eligible to work in Singapore too, as your degree would recognised by Singapore Medical Council.
Doctor pagalavan, how about pmc ,Melaka manipal, and imu local. Which one would you prefer?
All of them are OK but I would still prefer IMU
Yes in Sabah. What is the different between MQA recognition and MMC recognition? Btw is it true that the higher the ranking of the medical school, more easy to get the job soon. Let say I get good grade graduate there compare with another person who also get good grade and graduated from MBBS UM, is the probability of he/she to get job mire higher than me or what?
MQA does not mean anything when it comes to medicine. It is MMC recognition that allows you to practise as a doctor.
I don’t think the grades will make any difference as the curriculum and exam standards are different for each university. As I said, public uni grads and gov sponsored students will be given priority. The government may even introduce some sort of exams to filter out “poor” knowledge graduates
Sir,what would u think about rcsi and ucd of pmc twinning? How to choose between them?
either one is OK
Doc,I’ve been having a second choice on doing my MD degree in AUCMS.does the university is fully recognised?will I get a job after finishing my degree in that university?does that university is quiet recognised in Malaysia?
AUCMS offers 6 medical degrees. Which one are you talking about? So far only one is recognised. As for job, it depends on vacancy at the time you graduate.
Doc, i meant the MBBS studies in the AUCMS.
what;s your question?
is that university quite recognised in Malaysia for MBBS studies?will I get job after studying in that university?or is that university is as the same as other none qualified private universities that offers medical course?
AUCMS has 6 medical programs, which one are you talking about? One one of their program is recognised by MMC so far
Sir,I meant the degree course in medicine, surgery and obstetrics.
Under which uni? AUCMS has 6 different degrees in medicine
Dr i was wondering if Aimst University is a good one? I heard many lecturers are leaving due to management issues~
Sir, how is RCM Perak compared to NUS (Singapore)? Can a person who study in RCM Perak get a job in Singapore? Thank you very much.
NUS is definately way better. No, you can’t work in Singapore with RCM Perak. Please spend some time reading this blog. All these has been written in this blog before
Sir, I am now still waiting whether or not I am accepted into the asasi program in public universities for dentistry. If I cant get in I would consider going for private universities for foundation. Is MAHSA a good university to get a dentistry degree? I have heard a lot of positive and negative rumours going ard. Which private uni is also recognised by other countries besides IMU? What about AIMST, Kedah?
IMU is not recognised elsewhere either. MAHSA is rather new and have not produced any graduates yet. Thus difficult to comment.
Sir, MD-UKM in alliance uni college recognised by Singapore or not?
Nope. It is clearly stated in SMC website that only UKM degree from main campus is recognised
Thanks:)
Hello doctor,
I’m having a dilemma to choose the right university for my MBBS programme.
I’m opting for an affordable programme, so my choices are between AIMST University , Mahsa university , UCSI university and CUCMS. Which one is the best ?
I’m currently pursuing my foundation studies in Aimst.
all are OK but won’t say the best. You can have a look at SETARA rating for further info.
hi Dr.. i just finished doing foundation in science from KBU. this foundation is recognized in IMU and MAHSA. if I don’t have the chance to go IMU, will MAHSA will be a better choice than other private uni? I hope your words can help to make my decision properly. thank you.
MAHSA has not produced any graduates, can’t comment much
Sir,what do you think about AIMST University?
The first few graduates were OK but I heard many of their lecturers has left. generally OK
Hi,Dr! Can you give me some advices on choosing between Segi or Mahsa for MBBS? And at the same time, Taylor’s is offering me full scholarship for biomedical science. So which should I choose? My interest is in medicine. Thanks for the reply!
Both have not produced any graduates. Thus can’t comment
Dr, between Monash Malaysia and Melaka Manipal, which one do you think has a better recognition and quality for its MBBS programme?
Both are OK but I would prefer Monash as the degree is recognised in Australia
Hi Dr, can you give me some comments and comparison about these two universities; Aimst and Royal College of Medicine Perak University?
Both are OK but AIMST use to be better
hi doc. i have a choice between perdana-rcsi and manipal. i cnt seem to decide. whats ur opinion?
Both are OK but Manipal has been around longer with proper campus
Hi Doctor, I feel glad to find your informative blog which has unveiled the realities to me. As your previous comment said, those who genuinely wanted to do Medicine would not be backed off by your “negative” posting (As perceived by others). I would like to thank you for granting me the opportunity to re-evaluate myself again in medicine and eventually I didn’t feel like backing off because I truly love the art of healing and I have put hell lot of effort in this course. I’m Not aiming for reputation, salary and glamour but just listen to the voice of my true talent, so come what may, I have already prepared.
Further to that, like Dr you said, medical schools are mushrooming in M’sia. I am now in the dillemma of choosing IMU (Local), Monash U M’sia as well as Perdana U-RCSI. Would Dr please enlighten me as to deciding which uni that I should attend to secure a better future in current competitive medical field.
For Perdana, I was told that the degree would be conferred by RCSI not Perdana, hence I would be getting the EXACT similar degree as in Ireland. If in that case, what’s your opinion? Would it be globally recognized as well?
Besides, as we know that those candidates who have accepted the JPA scholarships to study Medicine are required to be bonded for 10 years with the government. I was wondering will the bonding affect a candidate in pursuing their Master in order to become a medical specialist?
Awating your Reply
I would suggest IMU or Monash. I still do not trust Perdana. Same degree dose not mean same recognition! Monash and Numed offers the same degree as their home country, BUT it is not recognised elsewhere!
Bonding does not affect Master’s application but your bond for Masters will add on to your undergraduate bond.
Yeah, couldn’t agree more to you, the prospect of medical programs offered in Malaysia is pretty low. Wait a min, if I am to take up the scholarship, and on top of the bonding years of my Master program, which means I would be bonded for 17 years in total?!(10+7)
YES
Dr Pangalavan, did AMC “derecognised” Monash M’sia degree? Because to my knowledge, it is recognised by AMC all the while.
Nope but it does not matter as chances of getting internship post over there is getting very slim
hello Dr Pangalavan
i would like to ask you
i got an offer from unisza for MBBS
do you think it is okay?
It’s new, can’t comment much
Hello doctor,
i would like to know is manipal international university recognized for bachelor of science(biotechnology) hons…??
my sister is currently studying in MAHSA for bio-medical science.. year 2 sem 2.. she is not satisfied with the college certification since its not much recognized after graduation..
therefore, she wants to do credit transfer.. so would manipal be a good choice or is there any better suggestion…
thanking you n advance…
Jess 😀
I am not very sure about this as generally, not much issue for other courses as long as is accredited by MQA.
how about the response in oversea..?? do they recognize manipal cert..??
I know maniple medical cert is not recognised even in india! As for other courses, generally not a big issue.
Hello sir, did Mahsa uni hat not yet produced graduated student in MBBS?I ask the marketing there and they said that they had produced graduated student and now some of them wor at the hospital n some open their owm clinic..haha..what ur opinion about biomed mahsa?thank you sir
Their MBBS Was just accreditated in June 2014. They will produce their first batch this year!
Opening clinic???? Obviously he is talking crap!
Hi Dr, hope you are well. I read your blogs and you seem very knowledgeable:) I am currently doing my foundation in science, hoping to apply for the next intake for MBBS. I have a few questions below that I am hoping you are able to answer:
1) I am currently confused between choosing a medical school for some time. I have narrowed down my options to IMU twinning programme, Newcastle as well as Monash Malaysia/Australia. May I know what would you personally suggest based on your experience so far in terms of quality of teaching, lectures, recognition of the university etc and why?
2) From past experiences, has students managed to obtain housemanship overseas via the IMU-PMS route or get the medical school they wanted? And does the Singapore medical council recognise some of their schools still?
3) As for housemanship system in Australia, have Monash Malaysia graduates been able to obtain an internship directly there or even having the chance of studying their medical degree in Australia itself?
4) As for Numed, it mentioned that it had graduates going to the UK, I wonder to which extent is it possible?
5) I am also unsure of the current structure and pathway of housemanship in Malaysia.
Upon graduating from Monash Malaysia, if unsuccessful to obtain housemanship in Australia, could I work in Malaysia as a HO and MO and then apply for internships at unpopular regions in the Australia? Or I would not be eligible anymore since the university in Monash Malaysia mentions that their degree is accredited by Australia?
As for the IMU programme, is it common to obtain housemanships overseas recently? Which country has better chances of applying for housemanship? Is it also difficult to get your desired university abroad?
Also, for NUMED, can I know what are the chances of obtaining housemanship in UK, do we have to sit any exams? Any visa issues?
6) May I know what are the possible pathways of a medical graduate in the another case from Malaysia to eventually work in Australia, UK as well as Singapore? How long would the whole process take? Do we have to complete our specialisation in the Malaysia government university or hospitals, sit any exams like MRCP/PLAB or even can we take any different exams just to go to these countries or take up a specialisation course at a private university as well -could you explain the difference for this? I have been unsure of this pathway so I would really appreciate if you could explain this.
1) your choices are good as all these programs gives you an opportunity to work in another country. All three are OK.
2) SMC recognises depending on which university you graduate from after the clinical years. Please check the SMC website for the recognized universities. Yes, I know many who manage to get a job in UK, Australia, NZ etc after graduating from a twinning program done in that respective countries.
3) Monash Malaysia 5 year program is all done in Malaysia. Yes, you can apply for an internship post in Australia/NZ. It depends on availability of post. There are still some who are receiving an internship post directly but the numbers are getting smaller and the post are generally in unpopular areas in Australia.
4) It is recognised by GMC and you can apply for internship in UK
5) If you have completed housemanship in Malaysia (graduate of Monash Malaysia), you can apply for an RMO job in Australia. You may need to do certain rotation as an RMO based on what AMC wants you to do. You don’t need to sit for any exams.
IMU twinning program depends on where you graduate. So far UK, Australia and NZ guarantees housemanship for those who graduate from their universities.
Numed: no exams. At the moment, I think most who apply are getting a post and VISA not an issue. But things can change in 5 years time.
6) This need a long answer. Please read my blog in detail from A-Z where all the answers are there. BTW Singapore do not recognised NuMed and Monash Malaysia.
seriously?i will be taking MBBS at mahsa this sept..im speechless..whats the problem if they just saying the truth..
No one can open clinic without doing housemanship and compulsory service
Hello doctor, if I had to choose between IMU and AIMST for MBBS, which one should I choose? Thank you.
hello doctor, i have completed my 1st yr in aucms and now i wanted to transfer credit for 2nd yr in SEGi. do u think it’s a good idea. i meant is it ok?
AUCMS is unstable. SEGI is new and have not produced any graduates, so can’t comment on quality. Are you sure you can do credit transfer to 2nd year?
Hello doctor..how about quest international universitt and royal college of medicine perak for mbbs?? Which one is better??
Quest is very new. RCMP is now UniKL.
I am perplexed that AIMST University was established by MIED of MIC; apparently, the perception and acceptance is less than enthusiastic among the Indians themselves. This is only my observation judging from what transpired in this blog. I opine that the establishment of AIMST U is good and is a beneficial socio-economic initiative, especially for the Indians.
Unlike the Chinese, though they are less agreeable on MCA’s political inclination, but have embraced and supported fully TAR-UC and UTAR as both are MCA’s initiatives. While in the industry, particularly the Chinese based SMEs and organisations, have rated favourably graduates from both the institutions despite the fact that only recently did the Government recognised qualifications from TAR-UC.
In the 2013 discipline based D-Setara rating by MQA, only 15 medical institutions were rated with UM rated Tier 5. AIMST U was rated Tier 4 together with 11 other institutions, including the more costly IMU. While UCSI and USIM were only rated Tier 3. It is clear that AIMST U is at par with all the others, except UM; thus, value for money.
May I stray just a little that some of the pricy schools (often wrongly perceived and claimed as better or prestigious) offer far less impressive clinical trainings than AIMST U does. Seriously, can there be wholesome clinical trainings for students in small district hospitals that only have a small group of specialists with relatively low patient loads- such as in Kluang and Batu Pahat? Your guess is as good as mine. Assertions of graduates from certain institutions are better than others must be supported by valid studies instead of basing on casual comments and hearsay.
Some of the opinions or comments in this blog claimed to be neutral, but really, anybody who understands linguistic diplomacy would be able to pick up many unjustifiable airy biases. Apparently, the recommendations in preference for pricy schools are done mindlessly without giving due considerations to costs-benefits factor. Ironically still, many agreed that now, to be a GP is no longer financially rewarding, yet costs-factor has been ignored conveniently.
Generally, on the basis of tuition fees alone, private medical schools in Malaysia can be group into three bands: below rm400k, below rm800k and rm1m or above. Then based on fees, facilities and graduates quality, AIMST U certainly stands out among the others in the same band.
Now, let us look at the potential stream of returns of a HO/MO, which is between rm2.5 to 8k per month. With such a modest stream of returns, it would be unwise to fork out any amount more than necessary to be a doctor, because the earning power is basically similar for all HO/MO and GPs. In business, this is called the CBR (cost-benefit ratio), a prime element among other indicators for investing. In these lights, I urge students to be more discerning and pragmatic in choosing a medical school.
Lastly, I agree that there should be a common entrance exam, which should also include medical aptitude tests for all Malaysian students aspiring to do medicine locally or abroad. Also, all graduates must pass the professional MQE to be admitted in the profession irrespective of their academic medical qualifications.
No one said AIMST is bad. They have their own problems but generally they are OK. They face the same problem as any other medical schools. Who said KLuang and Batu Pahat has low patient load? They are as busy as any other GH in Johor. The number of specialist in these hospitals has also increased over the last 5 years. They have specialist for almost all speciality now, including radiologist. If you know how SETARA rating is done, I won’t bother to even look at it.
YES, the best way to assess quality is still a common exam!
I am currently doing foundation leading to mmbs in Aimst..To be honest, life in Aimst is not easy..Syllabus is not tough actually..most of the syllabus are compilation from australlian matrics and form 6…I am going to finish my Foundation this May and im already having second thoughts on whether to continue my degree in Aimst..The quality in terms of basic uni facilities is going down the drain as we speak..The food without doubt is terrible, library is almost very saddening, wifi is only available once in a blue moon..hostel facillities are also very disappointing..i would not go in detail..but in conclusion, the teaching might be ok(just okay) but if you are not gonna keep up to a world class university level, then you are gonna lose students..yes,aimst might have most recognitions and more experience..but most of mbbs lecturers are filled with bangladesh..most of the indians have left…the management is not taking any actions towards the improvement of the uni…i believe everyone is in a ‘cut cost’ mode…if anyone is planning to pursue in aimst for whatever course, you have to really prepare yourself for anything because its gonna be tough.
Heard about it! As what i wrote recently, most universities may go bankrupt!
There you are, small hospitals in the districts are “OK”, no one said they are bad, but the good ones are in the cities and capital towns.
Both the hospitals you mentioned are NOT district hospitals anymore. They are considered equivalent to GH.
Hi Dr, I would like your advise i have decided to go-ahead with PMC to do the RCSI program. What would be my chances to do my housemenship in Australia? Would AMC recognize the RCSI degree?
All international medical graduates IMGs (other than grads from Australian schools) listed in the IMED of FAIMER (to date only 21 med schools in Malaysia) are elligible to apply and sit for the AMC CAT MCG exams, comprising 1. mcq tests and 2. clinical skills competency (under the standard pathway). Successful candidates will be issued the AMC certificate that allows one to apply to the AMBoard to be issued a provisional pract. cert for 12 months under supervision (internship),on condition that one has already been offered an employment. So, it is difficult to get a place to do intern in Australia.
Hi Dr Pagalavan
First I find your comments very helpful and thoughtprovoking. Thank you
My son, who is an Australian Citizen, is thinking of PMC and IMU and in your opinion IMU is better cos of the twinning program with UK and the associated clinical experience. I agree with you as it will be better for internship and also the qualifications will be recognised in Singapore.
The dilemma is what if you are not successful in securing a place in a UK twinning program, you are stuck with a degree from IMU.
With PMC you do the clinical in Penang but getting an internship back in Australia will be an issue. The degree will be conferred bu University of Ireland which is recognised in Australis but the internship is a major hurdle.
Look forward to your opinion on this
PMC degree is not recognised in Australia. He either have to sit for AMC exams or complete his housemanship in Ireland.
Of course, IMU twinning program can be risky.
Dr Pagalavan
Thank you for your response
Getting houseman in Ireland is very slim.
However the Irish Medical Council recognises internship in Malaysia which my son will not get cos he is not a Malaysian Citizen. He can do his housemansip in Pakistan, S Africa or Baharain which the Irish Medical Council recognises and this will be recognised for practice in Australia. Am I correct with this view and assumption???
If this is not then he will have to sit for AMC exams to be eligible for internship in Australia.
Yes the IMU twinning program is very risky cos the number of places available for partnership Universities is very few and the competition is very stiff.
Your opinion and view will be greatly appreciated. I tried to phone your land line but you were not in your office
Thank you in anticipation
Vinder
He has to get the Irish medical council full registrations first before going back to Australia. Thus, he has to work in Ireland first.
Dr Pagalavan
What is your opinion of Newcastle University Medicine in JB
It’s Ok but since you will be considered as a foreign graduate, immigration laws apply if you intend to work in UK. It is NOT recognised elsewhere
Hi doctor… may i knw which uni is better? Cucms or msu…for medicine… course
both are OK but CUCMS did get into trouble with MMC 2 years ago
Dr. Thilagavathy
Hi doc, may I know whether I should choose Penang medical college or imu twinning program if i plan to do my internship in Singapore ?
As far as I know, PMC is not recognised in Singapore. IMU twinning program is a better option as long as the university that you are twinning is recognised in Singapore. However, I must warn you that the twinning program under IMU is not guaranteed.
Hello, I am an international student and I got 2 offer letters for MBBS (IMU and IIUM). I would like to ask for your opinion which one is better to choose?
(fees are not an issue). thank you
Which one is recognised in YOUR country? As far as training is concerned, both are OK. I am sure you are aware that Malaysia do not provide housemanship/job to foreigners.
Both are recognised as far I know and this gave me more confusion to choose.
between the two, which one is better?
May I know which country are you from?
Oman
Are degrees from IMU, Monash and NUmed for MBBS recognized in India?
I’ve seen their website and it’s written that it’s recognized by the MCI(Medical Council of India). Also as an international student, I know internship isn’t available in Malaysia but can I move to practice in other countries? Like if I get a NUmed degree then practice in the UK?
It is only recognised by MCI in order for you to sit for their screening exam(entrance exam). Please check with MCI.Monash is recognised in Australia/NZ, Numed in UK. IMU is not recognised elsewhere unless you take their twinning program. However, internship is NOT guaranteed in any of these countries.
For studying MBBS in Malaysia as an international student. Which university (IMU, Monash or NUmed) would you suggest to apply?. Now I’m planning to get my MBBS from Malaysia and give the screening exam then do my internship in India. It’s possible that way right?. Since the twinning program may be risky, I don’t want to opt for it.
All 3 are OK but NUMED annd Monash have an option to work in UK and Australia/NZ if able to get a position.
If there are any other universities in Malaysia which you would suggest other than IMU, Monash or NUmed please do.
Oman
Hello, sir. I need and would like your opinion on this matter.
My cousin has asked me to apply for the second intake of UiTM (March 2015) if I am not mistaken, and I follow his instruction accordingly.
However, at the same time, I also apply to MSU for a Bachelor of ECE (Hons) and recently got accepted into the institution. The registration is taking place around 3 to 7 November.
My dilemma is this, whether or not, I should accept the offer of MSU or wait out in anxiousness on UiTM second intake whilst taking the risk of losing the one offer that I received in prior when there’s the slightest chance of not being accepted to the March intake of UiTM.
Are you talking about medicine? Do you have the minimum qualifications to do medicine?
I don’t think so. I do have the minimum qualifications for the course though.
So, between MSU and UiTM, which one is the better, or a-much-worth-it, higher education to get involve with?
UiTM will have better facilities.
Okay. But, how about MSU? What is your opinion regarding the institute and the courses they prepare there, more specifically around the Bachelor’s Degree department?
They are still new and their first batch of medical graduates was just last year.
Hi dr! I wanted to know how are the mbbs grads from MSU are doing? Are they at the same level as others?
I have not heard anything bad so far
Hi sir! what do you think about UTAR mbbs ?
NO graduates yet, can’t comment
Hi sir,
I like to seek your comments for Dentistry course from MAHSA, IMU and Melaka-Manipal.
Thanks in advance for your time.
Can’t comment much as I am not a dentist.
Hi Dr,
Im currently looking for bachelors degree programmes which has good career prospect in future. Firstly I need your opinion about msu and utar. I have been offered microbiology at utar and nutrition from msu. Which university is better ? Which course I should go for ? Kindly advice. Thank you.
Microbiology seem to have a better prospect but at the end of the day, do what you are interested in and not which has good prospect. Job opportunities changes every now and then
Hello Dr,
What do think about biomedical science? Is there job opportunities for graduates??
It is a broad field. There are many jobs that you can do with it, even teaching.
Het Dr,
Can you tell me more abt AIMST? For etc their facilities and lecturers. Well it’s a quite well known and established medical school for dentistry but I heard its standard is dropping as most of the teachers left. Is the information true anyway? Thank you very much
All medical school standards are dropping. Most lecturers jump from one medical school to another.
Hi Dr;
Do you have any good recommend local private uni for Pharmacy ?
AIMST, RCMP (UniKL), IMU or UCSI ?
Thank you very much
I know IMU is OK
Good afternoon, Doctor !!! 🙂
What do you think about Melaka-Manipal Medical College for MBBS ?
(eg. their lecturers,degree recognition,facilities,bad things happened………)
Generally OK. But not recognised elsewhere
thanks in advance , Doctor 🙂
hello doctor
do you know of any universities in malaysia that offer twinning programme to universities oversea that could possibly be recgonised in singapore? besides IMU twinning programme.
i dunno if i heard of taylor’s college twinned to dundee or st georges? not very sure how reliable my informaton is and hence would like to seek expert advice.
or even newcastle university?
many thanks in advance!!:)
None that i know of. Taylor’s is a local 5 year program if i am not mistaken. Newcastle is not recognised in singapore
Dr, I got an offer from several top australian uni’s but turned them down due to the limited housemanship, now I Have narrowed it to IMU-Jefferson USA which requires me to finish my USMLE step 1 and another offer from NUIG Ireland(all 5 years) finance is not an issue but what would give me the best chance to pursue neursurgery, if by any chance I could obtain your number, it would be splendid, thank you and sorry for the trouble.
Entirely up to you. NO such thing as easier way to become a neurosurgeon no matter where you intend to go.
Hi doctor. Which uni is better IMU( full time local) or Newcastle – in term of recognisation and etc?
Both are not recognised widely. IMU is recognised in Thailand and Sri Lanka. But they are well established and the oldest private medical school in Malaysia. Newcastle is recognised in UK but you will not be able to get an internship post in UK making it impossible to get GMC registration. It is not recognised elsewhere.
Thank you doctor. How if I did my degree in IMU or Newcastle and then I plan to do my specialisation (master) in overseas uni? Is it possible in term of recognisation? Will other uni overseas recognise my degree?
If your degree is not recognised elsewhere, you can’t work in any other country. Thus, you can’t go overseas to do your specialisation. Please read this blog from A-Z under For Future Doctors page. ALL the answers are there.
hi doctor, I heard that IMU graduates are found to be the best as housemans compared to other local universities’ graduates. how true is that?
will u recommend me to go for imu or gov uni like uitm or uiam?
hi doctor, I heard that IMU graduates are found to be the best as houseman compared to other local universities’ graduates. How true is that?
will u recommend me to go for imu or a gov uni like uitm or uiam?
They are still one of the best among private colleges. I don’t talk about UiTM as their racial policy is against my principles. UIA is ok
Hi doctor,
I am considering taking MBBS in AIMST or UTAR, but both of my seniors, from either university is telling me not to study in their respective uni.
In your opinion, which uni is better? Aimst or Utar?
Hi, I want to pursue MBBS course, local university is cheap but its very rare for non-bumiputera to get into local university. If i study foundation in science or A-level in private university, is there any chance i can apply for MBBS in local university ? I’m still deciding which university/college i should apply for my foundation. because I’m worried that the foundation certificate will not be recognized by the medical school that i wish to apply.
Besides, which medical school in malaysia will guarantee their MBBS graduates get housmanship offer and have affordable tuition fees ?
I presume you are talking about PUBLIC universities! Generally, local public universities only accepts students from STPM, Matriculation or Asasi. However I do know that USM and some other apex university accepts a few A level students. The chances are very slim.
NO MEDICAL SCHOOL can guarantee you a JOB!
Thank you for your info. I would like to ask… MAHSA and AIMST, which would you recommend me ? I heard AIMST is dropping…
Currently MAHSA looks better
Hi Dr.
You are doing a great service here and unbiased advice is difficult to find.
My son is now is in his final year at UNIMAS. He is one of the best students there and with full A’s in all postings with the exception of 2 with a B+.Also in on the Deans List every year.
We were think of sending him for his House officers training to Singapore but looks like the Uni is not listed their SMC so what option do we have? Do I just ask him to do his house officers training locally? Do you have any suggestion or opinion we will be happy to hear it, Thank you
UNIMAS degree is not recognised elsewhere. Thus he can’t do housemanship anywhere else. If you want to work in Singapore, you need to sit and pass the SMC exam. However, no guarantee that you will get a job
Hi Dr,
Thank you for the info. What will be your advice to student going to UNIMAS.
It’s a general opinion that non-……. student have only a slim chance in getting into UM and UKM. Even student with 4 A’s. From what I hear from my son they are taught well, of course there are areas that they can improve.
UNIMAS is OK
Hi Dr,
I have a lots of passion to become a doctor. When it comes to MAHSA UNIVERSITY , do you think it’s a best uni to pursue my degree in MBBS?
MAHSA just produced their first batch of graduates last year. Thus, can’t comment.
Okay, if i choose to study at MAHSA. Do u think it’s the best choice?
it is recognised
Hi. What is your opinion about studying MBBS at Management & Science University India? Is it true that India medical graduates have more quality?
That depends on the university. Not all university in India is good.
I applied for a MARA program which offers foundation at MSU Shah Alam and then I can continue for MBBS at their campus in India. Is it a good choice? What is your opinion about the malaysian govt acceptance of medical graduates from a program like this?
IT is recognised by MMC
Dear Sir,
I am an international student and im having a very hard time deciding on the university to study MBBS course, would really love if you advised me on a good university, in terms of recognition and quality of teaching. I would like to go ahead and specialize after MBBS, so what is the process i have to go through after doing my mbbs course, should i do an internship in malaysia compulsorily or, i can do it in a different country, eg singapore, india or australia.
Universities im considering:Taylor’s, IMU, MAHSA. can’t study in monash as the intake is over for this year.
Your help would be really appreciated, thank you.
None of the university you mentioned is recognised in Singapore. Malaysia do not provide internship for foreigners. MAHSA and IMU is recognised in Thailand is i am not mistaken. Thus, my advise is, don’t do MBBS in malaysia. I know many international students regretted doing medicine here. They are stuck!
Thank you sir for your advise but do you think they might get recognition in the next 5 years? are the medical schools improving?, because malaysia is a good option in terms of the fees, they are affordable.
haha okay, thank you anyways. really appreciate your work, the way you reply to every question with patience, thank you sir.
So sir are there any countries you would advise me to study mbbs in? that have good recognition and are quite good financially?
Hi doctor, Between AIMST and UCSI, which one is better? I found that Aimst is quite affordable for me to study medic/pharmacy there, and for UCSI I think my parents would be a bit stressed but still Ok unless i hv partial scholarship offer . Which’s better in terms of quality of lecturers and facilities(e.g. medical equipment)? Do these two unis have human cadavers for their medical faculty?
1) AIMST in Kedah
~foundation in science: 11k but hv scholarship offer 1k(no terms and condition), so total tuition fee is 9.8k
~living cost (for each semester) : RM530 ONLY !!!!!
~MBBS : 285k ptptn loan: 150k
~Pharmacy : 108k ptptn loan: 68k
~dentistry : 285k ptptn loan: 85k
***NO scholarship for degree programme
2) UCSI in KL
~foundation in science : 19240 but scholarship offer around 9k(terms and condition: have to maintain CGPA of 3.0 in every semester), so TOTAL fee is 11067
~living cost i think around 1k every month, right?
~MD : 317k ptptn loan: 150k
~Pharmacy : 143k ptptn loan: 68k
***Scholarship applicants for MD and Pharmacy must pass an admission interview and gain average CGPA of 3.8 result in foundation in science~Successful applicants hv 10-30% partial scholarship offer. Is the admission interview difficult??
Both are recognised by MMC but not overseas. UCSI does their clinical years in Kuala trengganu.
Then, doctor, between AIMST and UCSI, which one you recommend? ^^
Both are OK but i won’t say excellent. Both have their problems but i think AIMST is more established
Then, doctor, between AIMST and UCSI, which one you recommend in terms of quality of lecturers and facilities? ^^
Actually, does it matter that the certificate or the college is recognised by mqa and mmc? If the current college is not recognised by mqa, but after the 1st batch graduates, that time the college ll be recognised, right?
Nope, no such thing. First they MUST get temporary accreditation when they start which is equivalent to approval to start the program. Yearly assessment is done till the first batch reach final year. Only then an exercise is done for full accreditation. Only After that it will be recognised!
How about MSU? Between AIMST and MSU , which one you recommend?^^
I won’t say either one is better.
Dr., how`s the career prospect(like career opportunity) of pharmacist compared with doctor in 2020?
Better if dispensing separation occurs
How about biotechnology and its starting salary?
it is very wide field.
Dr., the situation becomes more complicated now == I get admission to diploma in biomedical sc at Singapore Politechnic~With this diploma, i can continue pursuing pharmacy, medicine or dentistry courses, right? But, I heard that admission to degree programme at NUS and NTU is difficult, hv to go through interview and admission test, only top 10% successful applicants can further studies at NUS and NTU. Otherwise, hv to choose private college T^T But the career prospect in Singapore is brighter than that in M`sia…..
NUS and NTU is not like our “jaguh kampung” universities in Malaysia. They are world class universities which are strict on their entry criteria. However, if you do get in, you are almost guaranteed of a job.
If i apply for job in singapore with diploma only, they ll hire me or not?
depends on availability of jobs. But it is always better to do a degree if you are going for an employed job.
I m in a deep dilemma right now == I need a doctor…
Dear doctor, among IMU, MAHSA and UTAR, which one do you think is better for me to study MBBS? What do you think about taking STPM? I am having a real hard time considering it… it would be great if you could give me some advice, thank you
IMU is better. STPM is a good pre U program but only worth doing it if you intend to enter public university
Dr,
Thank you for your advice. Could you please kindly tell me the reason of choosing IMU? To tell you the truth, regardless of the future prospect, actually the financial problem is also a part for me to consider among these three… My parents said that they felt burdened if I were to go IMU as they think I might- their so-called ‘misuse’- their pension…==
Nevertheless, I have been thinking of taking STPM, but I think it would be hard for me to get MBBS offer…
IMU is still one of the best private universities.
Hi doctor !
I am STPM student and planning to take MD course at universitas brawijaya, indonesia. Is it the medicine course in indonesia nice?
How about the performance of some medic students that graduated from indonesia?
Generally OK but the healthcare system is different
Dr,
Is the MBBS program offer by the Mahsa University recognised by WHO? So far i know it is accredited by the MMC. Let’s say If i wanna further pursue my studies for example specialist to Singapore or even United Kingdom. Will my degree being accepted?
Whether it is recognised by WHO or not, it does not matter. What matters is whether the country where you are planning to go, recognises the degree. MAHSA degree is NOT recognised by Singapore or UK.
So you mean mahsa degree only recognized by Malaysia? Okay so far did you know which university abroad accept mahsa mbbs degree?
Yes, only recognised in Malaysia. If i am not mistaken, it is also recognised in Thailand
Dear doctor, between MSU India and USM-KLE India which one is better? How about the recognition in malaysia and chances to continue for specialisation?
Both are recognised in Malaysia. USM would be a better choice as they are more established.
But USM is MD and MSU is MBBS. How is the difference and which one is better? Thank you in advance.
they are the same!
Hi Doctor! 🙂
I have received two offer letters from RCSI (full 5 years prog) and also PMC-rcsi. However I am now in huge dilemma because I have heard a lot of pro and cons from both medical school. Can I have your opinion regarding these two?
PMC-RCSI has been around for almost more than 10 years. It is a twinning program and so far I have not heard any issues concerning their graduates. RCSI Perdana is new and yet to produce any graduates. I would prefer PMC-RCSI
What i meant is 5 years prog in RCSI Ireland itself and not perdana-rcsi. Which one would you suggest? They said twinning is much more better since we will be exposed to tropical diseases during clinical years. But some would suggest that graduates from RCSI are much more highly qualified.
either one is OK but practical experience would be better over here
Hello Doctor,
first of all i would like to thank u for actively advising med students on various question they have. Personally i dont believe in doing med coz of many reasons and which many we may share the same concerns.
My brother just after SPM has an ambition in wanting to become a Doc and so far he has applied and got an offer from UTAR & MSU, i would personally advise to try for IMU but financial being one of the concerns..can you advise me which one is better compare to IMU or UTAR ? and if you may give suggestions on which you would personally recommend personally other than those big ones such as IMU AIMST MONASH Or Melaka Manipal…thank you
UTAR is yet to be fully accredited by MMC as no graduates yet. MSU was just accredited 2 years ago. So far have not heard any big issues with MSU.
Doctor, does that mean that full accreditation will only be given after the 1st batch of graduates are out?
I want to join QUEST uni. But they are yet to be accredited. I find it risky to join a uni without full accreditation.
Ive been notified that they are currently waiting for their full accreditation letter that will be arriving within a month’s time. Ive emailed mmc and mqa but am yet to be responded to. Im desperate for answers. Please reply.
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
Yes, only when first batch reaches final year, you will know whether they will be recognized
“I will know whether they will be recognised? ”
So theres an area of possibility whereby QUEST wouldnt be recognised even after the 1st batch of MBBS graduates are out?
They are already under provisional accredition.
And ive gotten to know that, that provisional accredition date ends by the 27th of August 2017 (later this month)
Possibility is there like Perdana University PUGSOM program!
Hi doctor, is it difficult for a public/private university medical graduate to get a place to do housemanship? And what are the chances for one to further studies in specialization? Also, what is the pathway and requirements? Thank you in advance.
Please read this blog from A to Z! All had been written and answered.
Hi Doc, recently many Malaysian study medicine in Russia, what is your opinion? I am thinking of option for my daughter. Thanks
Please spend some time reading this blog. Comments about russian medical educations has been made several times.
hello dr, i’m planning to do the Mbbs programme soon after i finish my foundation studies which is ending in a weeks time and I’m currently at AIMST uni. With a reasonable Budget of maybe 300k which place of study do you recommend ? i know that IMU and MONASH and MANIPAL are all the high end uni but financially burdening too. So which would be the best out of the the Mid ranged universities in Malaysia? thank you .
None but you can try MAHSA or MSU
What about Aimst University?? Are they better than MAHSA?
They have been around longer. Can’t say whether they are better as Mahsa just produced their first batch of graduates last year
halo dr, after reading your article from A to Z, are you demotivating every student in malaysia to pursue their dream in mbbs? Its very sad…
Nope! I am telling you the REALITY. If you think that is what you want, no one can stop you but don’t say you did know what was coming!
Dream and reality are 2 different issue
If i join NuMed(the one in johor) will i get a job in UK? is it accepted?
It is recognised in UK but getting a job is another story all together. Based on the current immigration laws and availability of internship post, the chances of a foreigner ( non EU, Non Uk and Non in-house UK university graduates) in getting an internship post in UK is almost NIL. Thus, if you can’t get an internship post in UK, you will not be registered with GMC.
Im thinking about doing MBBS in AIMST/NUMed/Perdana-RCSI. So if i don’t even have the chance of getting a job abroad even with their degree, the best option is AIMST right? locally speaking. I did foundation in AIMST so i don’t think other Us will accept me.
let’s say i finished studying MBBS in AIMST so after that housemanship 2years and then 2 years compulsory service. In the middle can i do MRCPCH even using AIMST degree? Then after compulsory joining the Master’s programme? using AIMST degree?
Yes, of course.
Hello Doctor. I am an Indonesian student that has just graduated from Singapore. I was not offered a place in NUS Medicine, so I am currently thinking of doing Medicine elsewhere. I am currently applying to IMU, but I was already given an offer in NUMed and Monash(Australian campus) pharmacy. My dad kept insisting that I should apply to Universitas Indonesia International medicine also as I have the grades for it. What do you think I should do? I am planning to work overseas after I graduate, but I know that it will be extremely difficult for me to do housemanship if I study overseas. I am actually interested in biochemistry and chemical reactions in our body, so I dont mind doing pharmacy or medicine.
Both IMU and NuMed medicine is NOT recognised in Singapore/Australia. Thus, you may end up jobless after that unless you sit and pass the SMC exams. Malaysia do not provide housemanship to foreigners. If you are planning to work overseas, Monash Australia pharmacy will be a better option.
I am applying to the IMU PMS. If I do get offered a place in IMU, which one should I take, considering my future and all? Is getting into PMS really difficult in IMU? I thought you could choose the program in your application and then 90% guaranteed a chance to study in one of the PMS. Am I being delusional? Thank you for the advice doctor. It’s difficult to consult someone regarding these matters.
Yes, definitely it is a better option. However, I was told that it is up to the twinning university whether to accept you or not. There is no guarantee that you will be accepted.
Hello doctor, it’s me again. I am offered IMU PMS now and am currently confused with my choices: Monash Victorian Pharmacy or IMU PMS. I think that pharmacy is a safer choice for me, but I am afraid and confused about the job prospects of pharmacist in the future. It will be really helpful if you can give me some advice about my choices. I am grateful and appreciative for all your help. I am putting a lot of weight on job prospects, financial security and my passion in biomedicine. Another question is that if I graduate from pharmacy, does it allow me to do research or phd on medical-related discovery, like stem cells or new drugs? Or is Medicine a better pathway if I am interested in research too? Thank you for taking your time to answer all my questions. It’s a lot so thank you once again for sharing your thoughts with me.
IMU PMS, while it is risky , it allows you to continue working in the country you graduate, if you are NOT bonded. Same goes to Monash Pharmacy but you are doing the entire 4 years in Australia.
Yes, pharmacist can proceed to do PhD and research. Yes, you can be involved as a team in medical related discoveries. In fact, new drugs are never discovered by doctors. It is always discovered by scientist, pharmacist, biochemist etc.
Hello Dr, I’m a year 1 mbbs student in utar. I’m aware that utar mbbs is recognised by MQA but not MMC as it has not produce any graduates yet. Can I know what should I do if after I’ve graduate and utar still have not get recognised by MMC ? Thank you Dr and look forward to your reply. 🙂
You need to sit and pass the MQE exams.
Ok thank you doctor. 🙂
Hi doctor. I am planning to become a doctor in future. i just want to ask u some questions related to tis field. People nowadays claim tat the amount of doctor are getting more and we, the future doctors might be jobless ! is tat true? In order to overcome tis problem , what should we do? Is it fine for us to straight away continue our master if we are jobless?
or is it a must for us to serve for a few years? And there are so many medical schools behind nowadays wif different prices . Is it worth to spend much money on better medical school? wad do we gain? better quality? but i do believe as long as u are gud, no matter whr u go, u are still gud. Correct me if im wrong ! Thanks!
Looks like you did not read anything in this blog!!
Please spend some time reading everything written in this blog, especially under For Future Doctors page!
hi dr.. i want to ask. i just got an offer for pursuing studies in dip medical imaging at mahsa. i need ur oppinion here.. do i have to go there?? to you… is mahsa good in dip medical imaging??.. thank you.. hehe
For diploma courses, I think they are OK.
Hello
Dr. Pagalavan Letchumanan
I was accepted for MBBS at mahsa university
Please tell me if it is a goo choice (I am international student by the way)
That depends on where you want to work after you graduate. MAHSA degree is NOT recognised elsewhere except Malaysia and Thailand. Malaysia do not provide housemanship for foreigners.
sir
Do you mean that I can only work at Malaysia and Thailand only
I cannot even work in my country if I studied
I did not get it
Which country are you from? You need to check with the medical council of your country whether MAHSA degree is recognised or not. If not, you may need to sit and pass your country’s entrance exam/medical qualification exam.
Dear Dr. Pagalavan
I love to study medicine as well as engineering so I got this idea that I will enter MBBS degree then I will specialized master in biomedical engineering
my question
is this possible ?
sincerely
There is no such thing as Master’s in biomedical engineering for doctors! It is only for engineers.
Dr. I want your thoughts of the difference for example between Mahsa university and Monash university mbbs course
is there any significant educational or any other differences given that i will surely have a job after becoming a doctor on a private business
internationally
I think you are lost. There is no such thing as job in private internationally for medicine. Monash is recognised in Malaysia and Australia. The last I heard they were trying for Sri Lanka and Mauritius recognition. Saying that, the chances of you getting an internship post in Australia is rather slim.
What I meant doctor is do you think there is significant educational differences between Mahsa and monash that can affect anyone who is able to have his own clinic in his country like me (Has the ability to build his own clinic)
Because we are two brothers ,I got accepted at Monash and my brother was accepted at Mahsa. SO does it deserve to reject the mahsa and take another foundation sem to enter monash in your opinion even though acceptance is not guaranteed for my brother
thanks
As I said, it depends on what you want to do in the future and where you want to practise. As far as I know, NO country allows you to open your own clinic without doing internship. So, your basic degree must be recognised in your country, failing which you need to sit and pass your country’s entrance exam. Only than you will get an internship post.
MAHSA and Monash have completely different syllabus. Both should be ok if you are just planning to become a doctor.
Hello Dr. Pagalavan
I have read most of your articles
I am very confused about one issue
i have both Mahsa and Monash offers for MBBS
Mahsa will start this September and the Monah’s on march next year
I am planning to complete the MBBS course and go back to my country do this entrance exam and the internship ,then practice privately
I have enough sources to open a private clinic and my country is not as complicated as Malaysia since there is about 1 doctor for 1000 people
so my question is
Is it better to stick with Monash and pay at least 150000RM more than Mahsa
and also waiting to the next year and getting involved on Visa issues ,or just start this September with Mahsa
What is the differences between them anyway
looking forward to your response
thanks
Either one will do since you are going to sit for an entrance exam anyway in your country.
Sir, is it MAHSA a secure place to study Medicine? I heard that it still new.
It received it’s MMC accreditation last year
Between, mahsa, ucsi and Taylor’s which one you prefer the most?
Both Mahsa and UCSI has been accredited. Taylor’s not yet
oh okay. Thanks 🙂
Hello Dr. Pagalavan
I have received the offers from both Penang Medical College and Monash Malaysia for the medicine program. Unfortunately I got offered to the 6 years program at PMC but 5 years at Monash. I can have some experience study oversea if I choose PMC, but it takes me 1 more year to graduate and i’m already 21 this year. Which uni should I choose as my first choice? i’m Malaysian student by the way, and plan to work locally after graduated, so the recognition as well as tuition fees are not really important for me.
By the way, do you know any information regarding to the scholarship provided by two of these uni? which university enable students to get the scholarship easier?
I really need your opinion for this, please help me to come out with an answer.
Thank you so much, appreciate it.
I saw this on Penang Medical College ‘s website — Medical Practitioners registered with the IMC can also work in Australia without sitting for the qualifying examination by the Australian Medical Council.
Is is true?
Yes, if you complete your housemanship in Ireland and fully registered with IMC. However, no guarantee that you will get a job in Australia or even Ireland
Both are OK. If you are only planning to work locally, Monash will do. I am not sure about scholarship
But between Monash and IMU, which will be better in term of job opportunity in the future?
None. All are equal in Malaysia.
Dear Dr Pagalavan,
I chance upon your website while i was searching for specialist. I was living in Singapore for 14 years, thus unfamiliar with the health system here.
Thank you very much Dr Paga for such detailed explanation for everything 🙂
I thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog and have spent like more than 4 hours non-stop reading your various posts. I must say they are addictive 🙂
I think i roughly get to know how doctors are produced and how a specialist doctor is groomed here in Malaysia.
I am amazed or should i say TOTALLY SHOCKED to learn about the mass production doctors at such alarming rate that resulted in Malaysia being drowned with mediocre and substandard doctor graduates. Soon, doctors with questionable credentials and subpar skills will start to see and treat patients. I totally agree with Dr Paga that they will then have the “license to kill”.
Reading through your post, I have seen many students who wrote right here with miserable language ability and lack of the courtesy to at least read about what they are about to do. Most of the time, they expect you to answer to their question directly, as if you owe them something.
Some of them are naively monetary and reward motivated, some have overbearing pride and excessively believe they should only do medicine for their “smartness” (i think some don’t even have the results to begin with).
Dr Paga, please allow me to write the below as i really feel a bleak and gloomy future pertaining to our country’s health system.
I would like to tell SOME readers here that:
If you can’t even bear with the stress and academic challenge to do a proper ‘A’ level or STPM and and choose the easy way out by doing the “DESPICABLE” matriculation or so-called foundation course. BACK OFF !!
If you can’t pass with at least a ‘A’ level equivalent of ABB (is the lowest acceptable grades in most of the reputable UK universities, usually only AAB and above is considered for an interview (only), not to be confused with admission once you meet the entry requirement. STAY AWAY!!
During interview, you have to show what it takes to be a doctor, qualities like
1) the noble intention to help the needy
2) be caring no matter who you are treating (even a drug addict)
3) the ability to build rapport and communicate effectively across all levels
4) are you doing community services periodically
etc etc…. SOUNDS FRUSTRATING and BOTHERSOME??
If you have totally no idea of what i am talking about, read the below:
http://www.medical-interviews.co.uk/interview-questions-medical-school-interviews.aspx
If you are not doing an internationally recognised world class degree, why waste your parents’ money ???
THINK AGAIN !! (for the sake of your parents if not for your own future)
Below is the link to the world university ranking:
http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2014#sorting=rank+region=+country=+faculty=+stars=false+search=
I totally respect the profession and appreciative of doctor’s contribution and i don’t want to see it getting messed up.
Usually i will search for doctor’s credentials and qualifications before i see any.
I will not think twice to question doctor’s abilities should he/she be found incompetent, i will not hesitate to confront or even expose or have a litigation should there be any malpractice. We are talking about life and death. Not to sound scary but there are more and more educated people out there who can’t tolerate mediocrity and “stupid” mistakes.
No foul play in the realm of medicine. PLEASE
Thanks to Dr Paga once again for sharing your invaluable insights and still stay in this country to serve the people. I salute you and hope you stay healthy and enjoy every moment with your family.
thanks.
This is not how things go
You are not using any logic here
I can respond to you by the same logic saying it is not students fault desiring medicine but the older doctor fault because they have not passed away yet and so taking the places of the next generation
We got to deal with things logically
Doc, I got offer from Taylor’s, mahsa and ucsi for mbbs. Which university do you think is the better one?
Dear Aimi,
Again, it shows that you are someone who expect Dr Paga to answer to your question directly like a baby waiting for spoon feed, please spend some time to read through the blog, these few uni names are mentioned for not under 20 times.
Regards
Jade
I won’t say any one of them better than each other.
Doctor, I need your advice.
I couldn’t make up my mind.
1. RCSI 5 years program in Dublin
2. Penanag Medical College + UCD 5 years program
3. National university of Ireland Galway
4. University College Cork, Ireland
Among all these med schools which one would you recommend me?
As far as I know RCSI doesn’t have a high ranking. In fact it is the lowest ranked. Is ranking important?
And from all those comment of yours you are not a fan of PMC I guess? Can I know the reason?
How about the two schools on bottom? NUI or UCC?
Thanks for your time doctor. Appreciate that.
Any school will do. Ireland schools are usually the same. PMC is also OK.
Thanks for your reply doc. Appreciate that.
Dr,
Which one should i choose, IMU or UKM?
Obviously I will choose UKM
hi doc! i really want your honest opinion regarding ims msu mbbs. I’m wondering if the interns are doing well for their housemanship in gov hosp? and i really wanted to know if msu mbbs graduates could be accepted to masters in public university in malaysia if they’re doing great during studying in msu, housemanship and residency. i hope you would give your honest opinion. but lets say if msu just produced their first batch thus you cant comment much, but i really hope you would give me clear answer whether the msu mbbs graduates could further their studies in master in public univ either they would be accepted or not. thank you doc!
It is recognised by MMC and so far no major complains.
mbbs msu in shah alam also recognised by mmc is it?
yes
Hello Doc.
I want know if any students who has completed MBBS here in Malaysia and also completed his housemanship completely, then desired to pursue a master degree elsewhere, does that mean that his university must be recognized on that country for him to complete and if not he must take the test then he can start his studying as a master student
is this the case ???
Yes, absolutely!
Hello Doc.
Can you please advise me on choosing anotebook or a tablet that will facilitate the huge volume of information and materials on the first year of medicine
I am about to start but i am stuck with the options
I think surface 3 is the best
Do i need this notebook on fhe first place
Thank you for helping thousands of medical students
You are doing better than the medical council itself ..
Anything that works will do
hi Dr, Thanks for all these informative posts about medical field. I recently talked to MedicED which is the agency that sends students abroad to study medicine and dentistry. the one i will be going to is Universiti Gadjah Mada, which is recognised by WHO and MMC, is it recommended for me to go? for medicine.
Gajah Mada is OK. WHO recognition does not mean anything. It does not mean you can work anywhere in this world.
Doctor, I manage to get offer from monash and ucsi mbbs/ md course. monash is better but the fee is much higher than ucsi. Is it better to go ucsi and save the money for my specialist? or go to monash? Can i work in private hospital of singapore even if monash is nt recognized by them?
As long as your degree is not recognised in another country, you can’t work in that country. It does not matter whether it is private or government! FYI. Monash Malaysia is not recognised in Singapore. If you intend to work in Malaysia only, either one will do.
doctor, most of them say that monash is better than ucsi. whats the difference ? is there any advantage of studying in monash if compared to ucsi in term of job opportunities in private hospital of our country. And is it true that monash graduate is better than ucsi and easier to become a specialist ?
IN Malaysia, all these is not an issue. Private hospitals do not employ housemen or medical officers(except for emergency department). Even then, you got 4 years compulsory service with the government. You also can’t do specialisation in private hospital. So, why worry about that?
Anyone can become a specialist as long as you pass the exams and undergo adequate training. Does not matter where you graduate from. The only advantage of Monash is the fact that it is recognised by Australian Medical Council. However, chances of getting a job in Australia is not very good at the moment.
then doctor, why most of them choose imu rather than ucsi? Imu is nt recognized by other countries too, only for some. Does the teaching really matter? does it worth the fee? or ucsi will do? and abt the compulsary service in government hospital for 4 years after houseman. Im quite confused since the doctors are too saturated nowadays. if we are nt given the post, what are we going to do then? (Cant even go oversea or work in private hospital)
Teaching do matter. IMU is more established with better teaching staffs. UCSI has produced about 5 batches and situated in Kuala Trengganu. Teaching staffs are mainly foreigners. So far I have heard some issues regarding UCSI graduates. Personally I would prefer IMU or Monash or even NuMed.
Yes, if you can’t get a HO post(which can only be done in accredited government hospitals), you will remain jobless. Please read this blog in detail. ALL answers are there.
ucsi is generally ok right? my parents can afford to pay for my ucsi md course. but i would hv to take loan to study in monash. does monash worth the money? i need some of ur advice
As i said, difficult to compare as both have different curicullum. If your plan is to work in Malaysia, anyone will do.
Helo,dr
I have a question about bach.medical imaging course. I want to know what is the prospect of this job in Malaysia. Is it easy to get job later? Second can I pursue my master in nuclear medicine later with this degree course. Thanx
Dear Dr,
Have you come across medical graduates from American ,medical schools? Are they well accepted here? What do you think of Jefferson medical college or Miami university medical school Of United States.
Dear Doc,
Is there something wrong with IMU’s twininning program for their medical degrees especially those with US and Australia
I heard some of the twinning universities have withdrawn.
Thank you
Hi Doctor, I’m currently doing monash university foundation this year and I’m interested in mbbs course. My first choice is monash university and the second choice will be manipal university. But I’m still doubting about the recognition and reputation both of this university as you said earlier monash doesn’t recognised by singapore and manipal university doesn’t recognised by india too. But do they recognised by worldwide (especially the western countries.)?
Thanks for the reply!
Obviously NO. Monash is recognised in Australia and New Zealand. However, getting a job in Australia is another question. Please read some of my latest post
hello doc, may i know some of our local med schoos that are recognised in other countries?
UM, UKM in Singapore
Monash in Australia/NZ
PMC in Ireland
You should spend more time reading this blog.
Interesting read Dr Paga.
I am amazed by your patience in answering questions here. I think you must be a good and patient doctor!
Anyway, when I was in medical school many years ago, I was already worried about job security and it was not like we have over 30 medical schools in Malaysia back then as it is now.
I think young people will need to look at themselves honestly and not just jump on the bandwagon and try to do medicine just because everybody think it is the right think to do and it is best way to earn money.
If you do something passionately, very likely you will succeed no matter what profession. Need not be medicine.
I used to be a top student in my school and naturally I studied medicine (because I thought that was the best thing to do!). My brother never understood science and he did law. My sister was an average student and did finance. Both of them are far more successful financially than me. Fortunately I have no aspirations to be a very rich man but I do enjoy what I do.
If you want to be rich and successful, you may be disappointed if you think medicine is the answer. Malaysia has very little control system and they allow all sorts of medical schools to sprout out.
UK has twice the number of people as Malaysia and is a far richer country and yet we have more medical schools than them. Something is not quite right.
So my advice is, if your real passion is to be a doctor, to be sensitive and compassionate with people, please go ahead and try your best if you have the means. Going to a good and well recognized medical school is important. After leaving medical school for over 15 years now, I can still remember the basic medical science taught well to me but many housemen, fresh out of uni, can’t remember a thing!
If you need your dad to sell the house and car for you to realize this dream, you may need to think twice, because you will not necessary return a multi-millionaire to repay him.
If you want to become a doctor because other people tell you it is good, you also need to think twice. Life of a doctor is not for everyone and not everyone will be successful. You may see some successful ones but many are struggling too.
I always like to bring my brother as an example. He is hopeless in studies but can talk and argue really well. Today he is a very successful lawyer, earns easily 5 times more than me !!
exactly what I am trying to say!
Dear Dr, I have enrolled to study Bachelor Science at UTAR. May I know is UTAR ‘s bachelor degree well recognised overseas ? For the course, Biotechnology or Biomedical, which one is better in terms of job prospect ?
Generally most other degrees has no issue internationally except medicine , dentistry
Dear Dr,
Would like to know about the Bachelor Of Pharmacy Programme in Quest International Uni in Perak Perak? Is it recognised? Compared to CUCMS which will e a better option?
You need to contact the relevant authority as I am not very sure about pharmacy
Hi Dr,
May I know between Mahsa and Taylor’s, which university is a better place to study MBBS?
Dear Dr,
In terms of future jobs prospect, is IMU or PMC-RCSI better? And which is more recognised ? As twinning program in IMU is difficult to attain whilst you get to study half of the program in Ireland for PMC; Is it better to just take the chance in IMU ( considering that it’s more established than PMC ) ?
Hi doctor, I have received two offer letters for the medicine programme from IMU and PMC. IMU offers me a fully local programme whilst PMC offers a credit transfer programme. May I know that which one will be a better choice for me? Please contact me as soon as possible because I need to give them an answer, Thank you.
What you mean by credit transfer ? PMC has always been a twinning programme . Clinical years are done in Malaysia. As far as i am concerned , both are OK. Only difference is, with PMC degree you are eligible to apply for internship in Ireland but unlikely you will get it.
Because I found this online http://peraktoday.com.my/2010/08/issue-on-penang-medical-college/ but I don’t know whether it’s true/credible or not, all I know is this is posted by a ex-PMU student. Doctor, in your opinion do you think I should save the money for specialisation (which means choose IMU) or choose PMC instead of IMU? Because for PMC I need to go for a 6 six year programme and which means I need to pay 200k extra than IMU.
It is entirely up to you. As I said, the only difference is in terms on recognition but you will unlikely get an internship post in Ireland.
For IMU, I might have the chance to fight for a seat for the PMS programme, if my results and performance are good. So what do you think ?
If I am not mistaken, you must decide early whether you want the PMS program or local program. I heard you can’t change half way. Not sure whether the system has changed
doctor, i want to know more abt specialist study, after i hv gone through my mbbs, houseman, medical officer . where can i study for my specialist? i heard that uk has a very hard exam to pass(mrcp) .which country can we go beside uk? Some of them manage to study on their own and only have the test in singapore. How is it abt and wat exam do we hv to pass in order to study a specialist
This clearly shows you have not read this blog !! Please spend time reading this blog , under ‘ For Future Doctors , page
Hi doc, is it possible to advise me on the uni to pursue bachelor of dentistry. This is because I did my first year at indonesia and I feel that their system is really bad and I am planning to transfer back to malaysia this year. Currently, I am considering between imu and mahsa because mahsa fees are relatively cheaper compare to imu and I heard that they have more clinical exposure during their clinical years compare to imu.
I am a malaysian, therefore, should I go for imu or mahsa? Which uni produce better graduates?
Either one will be fine if you intend to work only in Malaysia.
Hi doctor,
I wish to take pharmacy.
Which universiti is the best?
Either KPJ or Cyberjaya Universiti College of Medical science?
I am not an expert in pharmacy degree.
My goodness you are very very very patient answering so many repeat and sometimes out of topic questions, dr pagalavan …
I am a working adult, contemplating going back to school, likely medical … and looking at my options … what do you know about people in their 30s and 40s … or more, starting anew and heading back to school ? In this case, medical ? Been reading up on Graduate Entry programmes, some regional, most abroad.
Also, is Duke – NUS recognised in Malaysia ? I could not find it in the list of recongised medical schools / programmes in the Malaysian website, was looking at the second schedule.
Do local ( public and private ) schools welcome and accept mature / non-traditional students ?
Personally, I would not recommend anyone in 30s to do medicine. Of course people will say age does not matter but in medicine, it does matter. If you are 35 now, by the time you graduate, you will be 40. Waiting period for Housemanship is about 6-8 months now, probably will hit 1 year by then. Housemanhip is 2 years. So, by the time you finish housemanship, you will be atleast 43 years old. Are you going to do specialisation after that? Master’s program is limited to people below 45years old(many much younger will be waiting in the Q). Unless you are single, I would not recommend. The few I know who did enter medicine at age 25-30 struggled, some are still single! You must understand that holding a MD/MBBS do not mean anything anymore, unless you do some sort of post graduate degree. By the time you complete that, you will be almost 48-50 years old. Retirement age for civil service will be 60!Think about it carefully.
Some private universities do take matured students but you must understand that you will be considered same as any other student who is much more younger than you. Also remember that when you start your housemanship, you will be working with people much younger as your superior/consultant.
Duke-Nus is not recognised by MMC. PUGSOM is another option but they are still having problems with MMC. The fee is also too high.
Thank you very much for your input. Invaluable insight into the field of medicine for many of us looking from the other side of the fence.
There is a likelihood that I will be leaving the country. Most of my family members are abroad, and I am still single, and likely to remain so.
I do not mind working with, for or under people younger than me. I have an engineering doctorate and am currently consulting and also teaching in a private institution. So I meet with a lot of people, most of them younger than myself.
But the curfew of 45 for masters is news to me. It is a personal reason to go to medical school, has very little to do with money to be made, nor perceived prestige to be had.
Looked into some graduate entry programmes in Australia and the UK. Perdana’s not on my list. Appreciate anything else you can think of that I should be on the lookout for, making an application soon.
Lovely day …
If you intend to migrate, never do medicine locally. Do in the country where you intend to migrate. I am sure you are aware of the degree recognition issue in medicine. Please read all my post under ” For Future Doctors” page.
As for working with younger people, I am talking about taking orders from younger people!
Australia have quite a number of graduate medical schools but I am not sure whether they have any cut-off age.
Yes, the pesky little devil of accreditation and recognition, messed up many dreams and careers, lives and families.
I hope this will be addressed and righted someday.
Yes, I am migrating. NYUSOM’s 3 year MD is fascinating.
Yes, I will read and re-read them. Downloaded them actually for offline reading when I commute.
Taking orders from younger people … hmmm … I think I can stomach that. Served pizzas, driven for Uber and babysat for neighbours. But thanks for the realistic reminder, practical for me. I will take it as a challenge, without a pinch of salt, paying my dues, all over again.
Everything from you on this is appreciated. Coffee on me one day if we ever do meet.
Best wishes,
KC
Hi, Jay.
Doubt you would see this message but in the event that you do, I hope it finds you well. About 5 years has passed—did you end up doing medicine and migrating?
I’m 23 this year and currently possess a BEc and MEc. I gained an interest in medicine after being in and out of the hospital for a year. Have had numerous chances to reevaluate my interest and motivation factors and am conclusive that this is my true calling. Currently, I have loose plans to migrate and practise in USA so Perdana’s graduate entry programme with USMLE included is looking fitting so far.
I’m curious to know how this journey went for you. Any advices, wisdom, stories to lend is much appreciated.
Cheers,
DK
Hi doctor! I am an A level graduate and is under JPA scholarship. To apply for local public universities such as UM and UKM would have slim chances since I am an A level graduate. As JPA do not sponsor twinning programme, I have to do my degree fully in local. I have received offers from Monash Malaysia and IMU. May I have your two cents about which university should I consider in terms of recognition of degree and quality of teaching? Thank you in advance! 🙂
Since you are a JPA scholar, you will be bonded for 10 years. Thus, either one will do. The only advantage of Monash is Australia recognition.
Firstly, thank you for your comment. Yes, if I were to take JPA scholarship then I would be bonded for 10 years in Malaysia. I am aware of the slim possibilities to do internship in Australia after my degree, but do you think that in 5 years time Australia would change their policy for international students? Using my degree from Monash Malaysia, can I pursue my master in other countries? Considering all these factors, I would like to know your opinion about the advantages of doing MBBS in IMU. I heard that they have good lecturers from foreign countries and their entry requirements are very high so they might produce better graduates. But my concern is that this year both medical schools might be flooded with JPA scholars since they changed their policy to sponsoring for local universities only. So I guess in terms of quality of students would be quite similar, but how about the teaching and facilities in both medical schools? I am worried about the clinical training in different state from 3rd year onwards also. Is Hospital Sultanah Aminah in JB (Monash) or clinical in Seremban (IMU) better? Thank you in advance!
Whatever happens in Australia, you are still bonded with the government for 10 years. Furthermore, eventhough your degree is recognised in Australia, you need to complete internship there in order to be fully registrable. So, you will not get a job in Australia without completing internship. Monash Malaysia is only recognised in Austalia/NZ and not anywhere else.
Both IMU and MOnash are OK but JB is a more busier hospital with better patient load.
Hi doctor,
I would like to know if I did the twinning program offered by Manipal Melaka which is Foundation in Science then MBBS in India, the certificate is not recognised in any other country ? As in I cannot work abroad ?
Yes, unless you sit and pass the respective country’s entrance/qualification exams
Hi sir. May I know that other than Malaysia and Singapore, which country does recognize MBBS from UM? And is Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia good in your opinion? In terms of quality of teaching and facilities. Thank you!
None as far as I know. NUmed is OK but UM is more established with own teaching hospital.
Sir,i got to choose either imu or cucms. Can u give me ur opinions to help me to decide?
Hello Dr.
I’m Abellyna. My SPM results are 7A and 2B+. As I got A’s in both Bio and Chemistry, I would like to study for medicine. And I’m really confused on what should I choose to further my studies. My choices are AIMST, Melaka Manipal Medical College and MSU!!! Not only that Dr, as I wanted to work at Singapore once I finish my studies, I wanted to know which choice is well-recognised by Singapore and overseas as well?! Thank you, Dr.
I think you should spend some time reading this blog under For Future Doctors page. None of these degrees are recognised in Singapore!
Never do medicine for wrong reasons
Hi Dr Pagalavan,
I read through your entire blog and the impression I get for IMU with PMS option is there is a risk as it’s not guaranteed that you can enter one of the UK/Australia PMS after 21/2 year with IMU. However, I was told by IMU officer 2 months ago that you are guaranteed a place with their PMS as long as you pass every semester and obtain Ielts score of 7 and above. What do you advise?
It is up to the twining university whether you can be accepted or not. The better you score, the better your chance.
Hi doctor,
Numed and melaka manipal college, which would be a better option? I’m considering melaka manipal in terms of experiences but it seems like numed is more recognised. What’s your two cents on this?
NuMed is recognised in UK. However, to get a job in UK is very slim
Hello sir
I’ve often been told that IMU is a good choice for MBBS but it’s very expensive so I’m thinking of opting for UTAR (University Tunku Abdul Rahman) instead.
Is it good? What do you think?
Is cucms is good for medical couse
OK
Sir,I need your opinion😂
Which university is better?mbbs segi or mbbs mahsa?
Segi just produced their 1st batch. Both are accredited. Can’t comment on quality yet.
Hello sir
I’ve often been told that IMU is a good choice for MBBS but it’s very expensive so I’m thinking of opting for UTAR (University Tunku Abdul Rahman) instead.
Is it good? What do you think
Can’t comment as they just produced 2 batches of graduates.
Hello doc. I wanted to do foundation in science in pmc! Could you please tell me more about pros and cons about this institution? Does this foundation recognise by other medical schools in Malaysia?
Whether an institution recognises foundation program done in another college, depends on that institution
Hi sir.. i am currently doing fis in melaka manipal. I am planning to do mbbs but not in manipal. I want to do it in local university. Can u pls suggest me which uni is the best.. is it msu , ucsi, cucms or aimst.??
All are the same, why not Melaka manipal?
Due to financial constraints and some family problem. Which uni would suggest me sir??
it is the same whereever you go
I’m quite curious, in the four U (cucms, msu, aimst, ucsi) that you have said to be the same, not sure in terms of what, but which seems to be able to turn for the better if I enroll in year 2017? Sorry for the curious question.
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
let’s put it this way: most medical schools in Malaysia are not up to any international standards. They are generally the same quality. All the schools you mentioned are established ones. It is the new ones that I would not advise.
Hi sir. I can’t decide between IMU and Monash. After some research, I found that I have to look for housemanship on our own if I were to enroll in IMU. I really want to be a doctor am really concerned about the housemanship.
No matter which university you enroll, housemanship is a job you need to apply.
Hi, Dr. I would like to seek your advise regarding the two medical university l am looking at. I graduated in AUSMAT this year and torn between choosing Taylor University Medical College or Cyberjaya Medical College. Which university if better and well recognised. There is also a big gap in terms of fees between the college. It would be a great help if you could help me to choose wisely between the 2 university and the pros and cons. Many thanks.
Both are only recognised in Malaysia, but CUCMS is older.
Dear Dr,
I really appreciate the time you put into this blog. I was recently given an offer by NUMed, but is still thinking about that, IMU-PMS, and PMC.
You said numerous times that it is impossible to work in the UK although NUMed is recognized by GMC, but they told me that there are five hospitals in JB and East Malaysia that enables me to gain a Certificate of Experience after housemanship there and consequently gain full registration with GMC. What do you think of the credibility of this claim? Also, since that is possible, will a NUMed degree be recognized in SG then?
I personally prefer NUMed over IMU-PMS because through IMU’s advertisements, I feel like they’re a little too “business-minded”, as opposed to the more academic mood portrayed by NUMed. I know that the housemanship positions after IMU-PMS in that foreign country is also quite hopeless for non-citizens, so would you say that NUMed is better than IMU?
Finally, if my judgement is correct and we eliminate IMU, what do you think of PMC? Would NUMed or PMC have more exposure to patient contact in the pre-clinical years? Which graduates have better reputation as housemen? I know that both graduates can only complete the housemanship in Malaysia.
I really hope to hear from you soon because I’m really worried about my housemanship prospects. Thank you very much.
I had written about the GMC registration issue over HERE
I will say this again, having GMC full registration and employment are 2 different issues.
What clinical exposure you are going to get actually depends on the students.
Thanks for your reply, Dr. If you were to choose between NUMed, PMC, and IMU-Local, providing that money is not a consideration, which would you choose and why? Which of those three do you think would prepare me the best for housemanship? Thank you very much for your time again.
I think all these universities are equally good. Either one will do.
Hi doctor , I would like to get your opinion on MBBS that are not recognised in other countries . I am planning to do medicine in MMMC so if my MBBS is not recognised in other countries , do I have to sit for additional exams . I would like to get some enlightenment . Let’s say for an example , I want to continue my further studies in specialisation in Singapore and since they don’t recognise my MBBS certificate , what step should I take next ?? It is really confusing since I have decided that I really want to study in Manipal
I think either you need to read my blog from A-Z or simply buy my books. All the answers are there.
Thank you for your reply doctor 🙂
Dear Sir,
I am Sihara Lokuge from Sri Lanka. I received 6A*s and 3As for my Edexcel International GCSE and 3As and 1B for my Edexcel AS levels in Biology, Maths, Physics and Chemistry, respectively. I will be sitting for my Edexcel International A2 levels in June 2017.
I have decided to continue my undergraduate studies at Monash University Malaysia following the Electrical and Software Engineering programme in October 2017.
I have applied to Malaysia as I cannot afford UK, USA or Australia.
I would like to know whether it is worth spending my time and money on Monash University Malaysia. Is the degree awarded by MUM recognised? Also, I would like to know any other university recommendations and suggestions.
Thanking you in advance.
Regards,
Sihara Lokuge.
As far as I know, MOnash University Malaysia engineering degree is recognised in Australia.
As far as I am concerned, there are already NUMed graduates registered with GMC. Newcastle graduates can register with GMC as long as they work in particular hospitals in Malaysia, based on what my numed friends told me. Basically numed are good in terms of lecturers as they have lecturers from uk and the things I envy the most is they can assess uk lectures online anytime throughout the MBBS programme. And the transportation to hospitals are included in their course. Maybe that’s why fees is expensive haha.
Yes, I had written about that in one of my blog post in September 2015: https://pagalavan.com/2015/09/14/for-future-doctors-gmc-registration/
Hi Dr,
What do you think of the IMU-Dalhousie MD program then? I’ve basically read through everything on your blog and know that we are eligible for an F1 position in the UK as long as we graduate from a school there. However, I would like to know if the same applies to the US because you didn’t cover this topic as much here. I do know that we will NOT be considered IMG if we graduate from a US/Canada medical school to practice in the US, and can be eligible for residency as long as we pass the USMLE just like any other North American medical student. But, I would like to know if we Malaysians will be subject to any immigration restrictions when applying for residency in the US after graduating from Canada (just like the difficulties Numed students face when trying to enter the UK after GMC registration), or we would be allowed to simply apply for a position through the Resident Matching Program just like anyone else? Your reply is much appreciated. Thank you.
with Donald Trump now, nothing can be certain. You just have to try your luck. Usually there is no problem as long as you pass USMLE.
Dr,
Thanks for your reply. I read your article about the issue with Canada, and was wondering if you have any insight about the quality of the pre clinical years at IMU? I know that graduating from a PMS is good, but would it be worth it to pay that much money for a pre clinical program that might not be up to par?
Generally quality has dropped but as long as you can graduate from the twinning university concerned, you should be OK.
Since the drop in quality might potentially make the first two years a waste of time in terms of intellectual stimulation, coupled with the fact that the students there might not be as competent due to the low academic requirements (hence making the environment not desirable for maximum learning), do you think NuMed might be a better choice since they have quality control and potentially better students because of the minimum academic requirements that are significantly higher compared to other IMU (eg. IB is 37 vs 30, A level is AAA vs BBB/ABC). I think of the higher requirement as a way to filter out students who do wants to do medicine for the wrong reasons, but I’m not sure if this is the right reasoning to choose between the two. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you very much
Hi Dr,
I heard that UTAR has produced three batches of graduates, is it true? When I asked the person-in-charge during the education fair, he also said their graduates get housemanship within 6 months compare to others which require about a year.
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
UTAR produced their first graduates in 2014/15. As for housemanhsip, NO university can claim anything as such. NO preference is given to any university when it comes to housemanship.
Thank you very much doctor ☺
Hi doctor I am offered JPA bursary this year and I would like to study MBBS in private medical schools. Which one do you recommend?
IMU
Taylor
Monash
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
Taylor’s is rather new, IMU and MOnash are more established
Dr, in your opinion, should I opt for PMC or Newcastle university Malaysia to do my MBBS program?
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
Both are OK.
Hi sir, may I know which one do your prefer for MBBS? Quest University or MSU University.
Also what do you think about UCSI University?
Thank you so much.
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
MSU/UCSI are more established.
Hi Dr, you did mention that most medical schools in Malaysia are not up to any international standards and are generally the same quality. Would you say the same applies to NUMed, or are they better since it’s benchmarked against Newcastle?
NuMED, MOnash, PMC, RCSI etc are doing the same program/exams as in their home country. So, generally they are well monitored.
how is segi or mahsa now for mbbs
both have been recognised by MMC. Can’t comment much on quality as very few graduates so far.
hi Dr
how is segi for MBBS
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
Hi doc, I’ve just finished my A-level course this year and I’m planing to pursue mbbs course in Sept. So far, I’ve received offer letter from imu and mahsa but I still can’t make a decision. One of my father’s friend told me that mahsa’s mbbs degree is not recognised in UK and other countries. Thus, it will be a problem if I want to pursue postgraduate programme in the future. On the other hand, imu’s tuition fee is a big financial burden to my parents. Doc, do you know any universities that are recognised in UK and other countries so that I can pursue postgraduate programme without any big problem in the future? Your reply will be very much appreciated.
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
Firtsly I think you should buy and read my books to understand how medicine works. None of Malaysian degrees recognised in UK except NuMed and twining program by IMU with UK universities. Even though NuMed is recognised in UK, you will likely not get a job in UK after graduation due to their immigration laws.
Hi Doctor, I’m planning to pursue MBBS at Taylor’s university. I’ve just checked MMC website and taylor’s university is in the list of medical institution so does it means that Taylor’s is recognised by MMC? May I ask that which uni would you prefer for MBBS? UCSI or Taylor’s?
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
Vanakam doctor..i got offers from imu, aimst, and perdana university..which should i choose sir…im really confused..can doctor help me to choose it…bout their facilities..clinical wise..and also the oppurtunuties we get after graduate..i really need to know bout this uni and which is the best one for me to choose…doctor i really need your advise as soon as possible
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
As far as facilities are concerned, IMU will be a better choice.
Tqvm sir…if compare bout their clinical wise?

Good afternoon Doctor,
Doc, i need your opinion on MBBS @AMU, Asia metropolitan university,
Ive been considering for segi, ucsi or imu, but im thinking abt the cost at AMU is way more affordable . however, i believe the quality must be number 1 priority.
Between UCSI, AIMST n AMU , which one do you think is best ?
Thank you Doctor . 😀
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
I think there were enough issues surrounding AMU which has been written in newspapers before.
Go for established universities.
Hi Doctor,
Doctor, I really need your advice and opinion about MBBS @AMU,Asia Metropolitan University.
I’m considering doing MBBS at Imu/Ucsi/Aimst/quest, but I’m thinking about the cost which is way more affordable at AMU. However, I believe the quality and MMC’s recognition must be the first consideration .
Between UCSI, AIMST and AMU , which one do you think is better , Doctor ?
I really appreciate ur opinion .
Thank you Doctor . : D

Dr at which university can I take foundation in science for MBBS.
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
Each university will have their own foundation program.
Dr which university is best for MBBS?
Hi doctor . Between imu and numed , which one should i choose ?
Both are ok
Medicine in IMU or NuMed is much more better
They are the same
Is the quality of UTAR’s mbbs course ok?
Hello doctor.
I would like to ask you…If I take MBBs at IIUM, is it true that it is hard for me to get a job rather than other private universities?
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
As far as Malaysia is concerned, no difference!
Hi Doctor ,
I am actually a singaporean , I did not get a place in my local MBBS uni. Hence I settled to study engineering in NTU. Its been a year and I can’t help to think if I should pursue MBBS outside of Spore. Malaysia came to my mind. I understand that private uni like Monash, NUMed, IMC are not recognised by SMC so getting houseman ship would be the biggest challenge? Could you just share with me your insight? Do you think is it wise if I do a 1st year in MBBS in one of the private university in MSIA and try applying back to NUS /NTU MBBS?

It’s not worth it as your 1st year would not be recognised in Singapore. Credit transfer are not allowed from an unrecognised university. The other option is to sit for SMC exam after you graduate from Malaysia.
Sir, I’ve read many of your articles and I’m impressed. I confirmed my choice of med school, IMU-PMS last year after reading your articles. But this year, I’ve received offer from UKM… I’m in dilemma now, on one side I wish to study and work overseas but it’s very expensive. I can save money studying in UKM, but is it possible for me to pursue master in overseas uni after that? Erm… I always wish to get the experience of studying or working overseas, I’m not looking down on my country, but I think it’s a good chance to make friends in different country and a good experience in life.

UKM degree is only recognised in Singapore, unless you consider Singapore as overseas! Otherwise , since your degree is not recognised elsewhere, you would not be able to get into any training programme/ jobs overseas
Hi Dr, would it be better to pursue a full undergraduate programme for medicine in UK, Ireland or Australia.
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
anyone will but depends on where you want to do your internship
Dr, which country out of the three would be easiest to get an internship spot as an international student in your opinion.
Situation changes all the time. At the moment UK and Australia do provide housemanship to all their graduates.
Thanks for the information Dr
i am choosing between melaka manipal, imu and monash, i think melaka is cheaper and have better pre-clinical exposore? please advise, thanks. from Boon

how about MAHSA university?
So far not heard of any issues
Hi doctor , I need your opinion on medicine programme at Asia Metropolitan University (AMU) and from what i know their 1st batch has graduated , Ive gt an offer from ucsi and also have found that MBBS from AMU has been accredited by MMC (I checked it on MMC’s website) and Im interested to apply , but there is not much that i know abt the teaching quality there, from what Ive heard the lecturers there are helpful and so far the teachings are good . I also heard that their clinical training soon will be in jb (if im not mistaken) . But i hv not so many infos and exposure abt AMU . If i further my mbbs there, the cost would be preferably affordable . Do you think it is just the same as doing mbbs at another ipts since from what i know the HO post will not be due to from where u graduated, but depends on the vancancy .
P/s : i love reading your blog Doctor, it inspires me. Still need to explore more . Thank You . I really appreciate your time and opinion .

AMU is still new to comment on quality. Their teaching hospital is Muar Hospital and not JB. The first 2 years preclinical is done in Pasir Gudang JB. Personally I would prefer choosing a established university which has produced batches of graduates.
Hi Doctor. From MMC’s website, Widad,Asia Metropolitan University(AMU), KUIN and also Quest International University Perak(QIUP) have been accredited by MMC. These universities fees range is quite affordable than other ipts, but what do you think about MBBS at Management & Science University(MSU) doctor? KUIN,WIDAD and AMU fees range is more affordable yet would it better to pursue Medicine at MSU?MSU is in mid range fees price which would be quite affordable compared to another established ipts like IMU,Monash,NUMed.what do you think about the quality of teaching at MSU right now , lecturers/teaching staffs quality. and how are mbbs graduates from MSU doing especially the latest batches ?
Generally OK. All medical schools in Malaysia are recognised by MMC as of 2018
Hi Dr, if got the offer from Aimst and Perdana U- RCSI , seek your opinion on which one should consider , appreciate for your opinion/comments
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
The advantage of RCSI is that it is recognised by Ireland
Hi Doctor .I’m Kausilya .I finished my FIS at CUCMS last April and I’m continuing my degree MBBS at CUCMS too.Personally what do you think abt that university?😊
hi sir. im considering to take my medical degree in perdana. do you think its a good choice?
Hi Doctor, may i know how is the MBBS in Taylor University?

Hi Doctor,i am planning to pursue pharmacy at UCSI,does ucsi is a good choice? I am also wondering the problem about oversupply of pharmacist and can’t get the permanent post in hospital?
pharmacy post in government is limited. But your board do allow internship in retail.
UCSI is OK
Is Utar s mbbs good, should I enrolled in it doctor?
I can’t comment as they have very few graduates
Is UTAR mbbs degree is an option to go for as I notice not many going for it even it has cheaper tuition fees ..and I’m curious about it?
Hi. Sir for nursing diploma course at johor. Asia metropolitan is it a good university
I can’t be too sure.
Dear Dr,
Got offers from both Monash and IMU. Main concerns now is the Clinical School. one is down in JB ( quite a walking distance from hospital, being there ). IMU is in Seremban with link bridge ). Monash is 8 to 5 hrs classes whereas IMU only few hours a day emphasized on self study.
In term of Housemanship, which one is more practical. Many thanks in advance.
Monash is an Australian degree with possible opportunity to work in Australia or NZ. IMU is a local degree with no recognition elsewhere. Medicine is life long learning and whole day work.
Dear Dr,
If i did not get offer from public universities for medicine , and the only medical school I can afford is UTAR . I truly wanted to be a doctor because the process of going through treatments with patients , making a difference in their lives is very appealing and meaningful. but, I read through the comments made by previous commenters on the blog , the thing i want to ask is studying medicine at utar not good and will make me a less competent doctor than those graduated from public unis.
I am very afraid that what i learn will not help patients enough…. I need some doctor , what is your view on this situation i am encountering.
need some advice* ( lack of a word ), typing error
Every prospective medical students will say the same BUT let me tell you my sincere opinion after 23 years in medical practise! 60-70% of patients DO NOT listen to your advise or even take your prescribed medicine. That is the reality. UTAR is not a bad medical school but of course, a public medical school will definitely have the best facilities and teaching staff numbers. Graduating from a medical school do not make you a good doctor. It just gives you the basic knowledge of being a doctor aka diagnostician. The rest you will only learn after you graduate.
Dear Dr,
I would like to have some advice from you about should I choose public university or private university ( IMU) if I want to further my study in the field of pharmacy. Thanks for your help.
Dear Dr,
I would like to ask for your advice whether I should choose public university or private university (IMU) to further my study in the field of pharmacy. Thanks for your help.
I think for pharmacy, it does not make much difference
Thank you sir.
Good day sir,
I am student studying Foundation in Science. Ive read up to 70% of your blogspot and your articles are really eye opening. I’ve been reading your blogspot since Form 3 once I made up my mind that i want to have a career in Healthcare industry as i truly embrace altruism, also it is my nature. I want to be medical doctor because not only i get to express my altruism and also I am excited about the life long learning in this field. I even thought of what to do after Med-sch, I want to study about preventive medicine.
Due to the flooded market and oversupply of medical doctor, I felt very discouraged and it has shaken my passion in becoming a medical doctor. But it is the reality. The government needs to get something done in order to control the situation. Meanwhile, all these aspire medical students are living in fear and uncertainty.
My end goal in life to practice altruism and achieve life long learning as well as immerse myself in healthcare practice. Hence, i have given in some thought in studying Dietetics. I would like to ask for your idea about the dietetics industry as well as the job prospects.
Hope you could shed some lights on me. Thank you so much Doctor, you are my hero,
Well, I am not an expert in Dietetics. Generally, dieticians work in hospitals, food or pharmaceutical industries.
Hi Dr,
If given a choice between food technology in USM and pharmacy in AIMST, which will be t best option and prospect? Need your advice. tq
I am not an expert in both of these fields. Difficult to give a suggestion.
Hi
I would like to know if management and science university is good to study medicine

Dear Dr,
I am a JPA scholar and torn between Medicine in UM and Monash KL.Which uni has better teaching staff/facilities? Thank you

Hi doctor, i am having difficulties deciding which university to pursue my mbbs degree. Based on your opinion, can you please help me rank these universities in terms of quality of education, lecturers, recognitions and the state of the art facilities. All of the universities listed will be for the local option only. So, these are my options NUMed, IMU (local track), Monash, Manipal, Cyberjaya and Taylors. I would really appreciate your thoughts and recommendations. Thank you.

Good Morning Dr. Pagalavan,
I am planning to put my daughter in Manipal University College Malaysia for MBBS program.
From this year they are doing all 5 years in Malaysia. Is it better that twinning program?
Do they have enough infrastructure and lecturers to conduct 2 batches a year fully in Malaysia?
Is there any negative feedback about the college, lecturers, study environment etc., that you know of?
Would you prefer other universities over MUCM? If yes, what would be your advisable university?
Thanks in advance.
Mani
Greetings Dr.Pagalavan. What is your opinion about doing medicine in Poland-University Lodz after foundation in Science. I am not sure if the placement agents are reliable. Thank you Dr.
you need to make sure whether the university is recognised by MMC.
Greetings Dr. If I have an option to choose between Manipal Melaka and Royal Medical college penang, what will be the best choice?
Thank you Dr.
both are OK
Hai Doctor. What your opinion about mbbs in KUIN (recently known as UNISHAMS). The fees there is affordable for me but I wonder about the facilities, lecturer, clinical skills n training etc. In your opinion, i it a good choice ?
