As I have said before, soon the government will introduce a common exam for all medical graduates from overseas. The news in Start today by our Director General of Health is the clearest indications of that. However, we need to wait till the Medical Act is amended, which will likely take place this year or after the general election.
BUT I do not agree that this will only apply for the foreign medical schools. No doubt that it is difficult to monitor the quality of foreign medical schools by the Malaysian Medical Council. As such, like most other countries, the best way will be to ask everyone who graduate from overseas to sit a common exam to be able to get a job in Malaysia. I wonder whether it will apply for JPA and MARA scholars as well but usually JPA students should not have any problems as they are the top students in the country. Can’t say the same for MARA students as the drop out rate for MARA medical students internationally is almost 30% (this info is from MARA itself).
I feel the MMC should come up with a structured exam for the local private and public universities as well,or at least have periodic inspection to monitor their lecturer ratio, teaching quality and entry qualifications. The quality of their graduates should also be monitored. With unemployed doctors being a distant reality, I just hope parents will stop thinking that medicine will give their child a luxury life!
Exam for docs won’t cause brain drain
By LOH FOON FONG
newsdesk@thestar.com.my
PETALING JAYA: A proposed amendment to the Medical Act to compel all overseas medical graduates to sit for a common licensing examination will not worsen the brain drain situation, Health Ministry director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said.
“The Malaysian Medical Council examinations are not meant to make things difficult for them but to assess their core knowledge. They should not worry if they have passed their university examinations,” he said.
Dr Ismail, who is also Malaysian Medical Council president, said in view of the weakness in monitoring foreign institutions, the council had proposed to do away with the Second Schedule of the Medical Act, containing the list of recognised foreign medical schools.
“Students can choose any university they wish to attend abroad but they have to sit for and pass a common licensing examination before being accepted for registration,” he said, adding that this was practised in many developed countries.
The proposed examination, which would be different from the current Medical Qualifying Examination for students from unrecognised universities abroad, would ensure that doctors were “fit to practise” as safe and competent doctors, he said.
Recently, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the examination was one of the proposals it was looking into when amending the Act.
Although the Malaysian Medical Association and senior doctors had suggested that all medical graduates be made to sit for a common examination, Liow said it would only apply to overseas graduates.
It was not necessary for local graduates to sit for the examination as local institutions were easier to monitor, officials said.
However, senior doctors advocated otherwise, claiming that local schools could lower passing grades to make their universities look good.
Recently, The Star reported on the lack of training hospitals to meet the influx of housemen and a doctor had expressed concerns that some graduates lacked core knowledge and could jeopardise patient safety.
Asked where people could get advice on medical schools that met the country’s requirements if the Second Schedule was removed, Dr Ismail said they could get this from colleges and the council.
Hello, doc,
Im a medical student , currently studying in a unrecognized medical university . I need some clarifications regarding this paragraph….
“The proposed examination, which would be different from the current Medical Qualifying Examination for students from unrecognised universities abroad, would ensure that doctors were “fit to practise” as safe and competent doctors, he said.”
what they meant by?
Actually i do not worry about any qualifying exam in Malaysia. MEQ is just like a another final year exam for me.
Currently the MQE is not standardised. Basically it is the final exam of UM,UKM and USM. So, now the MMC and MOH wants to standardise the exam and make it compulsory for all foreign degree holders to sit before getting a job!
Nowadays, it can is also done in UMS, UNIMAS, UIA, and private colleges
Hi doc what’s the format of final exams in UM ,UKM and USM
it’s different in each of this universities. You need to ask each university
I see that you’re also studying in an unrecognised university. Let me tell you something. I studied in a very good university too but it was not recognised because there wasn’t enough ppl of a certain color! Some of my classmates and I scored very well, but when we came back, we were made to look like fools during the MQE Elective attachments. Worse still, they failed everyone (regardless if you’re good or bad) and made us wait from November to January to hear the so called ‘FAILED’ results. No matter how good / hardworking you are, chances to pass this exam is extremely NIL, unless by luck you manage to get USM as your exam center.
From the months we’ve spent wasting our time here, this is what some of my friends and other unrecognised medical graduates I heard are doing :
1) They get an agent to help them redo their final 6th year semester in a recognised university, then they come back as so called recognised graduates and manage to work with the blessings of MMC!
2) If you have lots of money, change your exam centre to USM, get some influential politician…and ahem…u know what to do! You need stronger politicians and more $$$ for UM and UKM.
3) Do locum illegally in some God forsaken place. Pay is good what..RM35/hour!
4) Some illegally change from unrecognised universities to recognised universities via Agents (especially in Kursk, RSMU, MMA, Nizhny Novgorad, Volgograd, CSMU-Although it has been derecognised, USU and other university’s in Indonesia. Agents will do magic (with the agent’s fee you pay) and ask the university to release a brand new transcript for you indicating that you studied in the recognised university from Year 1 itself…and Voila you’re considered a recognised graduate when you come home….and these are the ppl that MMC is so happy to absorb into the housemanship system!!!!!
5) Stay at home like me (if you don’t agree to all those cheating methods as I’ve mentioned above), do some other legal work and wait for the day justice is met in this country!!! (maybe you have to wait till hari kiamat!)
Let me tell you that MQE IS NOT AN EXAM! IT’S JUST A GIMMICK BY MMC TO SHUT YOU OUT OF THE SYSTEM. THE PASSING RATE IS NEARLY 0%! DON’T BE SO CONFIDENT THAT MQE IS JUST LIKE ANOTHER FINAL SEMESTER PAPER. IT IS NOT!!!!!!! MARKING IS BASED ON MANY OTHER SUBJECTIVE BIAS PARAMETERS….AND CHANCES ARE, YOU WON’T QUALIFY! THINK CAREFULLY!!!
VICTIM OF MQE!
hello victim of MQE ….
i want to know there is any intensive classes will b provided by USM,UKM or UM before sitting for the MQE ???
I am a graduate of a medicine school in Romania which is not recognised by MMC. I would like some details regards the medicine exam to enable my qualification in medicine to be recognised in Malaysia. What is the format of the exam? Is it in English. Is there a theory and practical component or just theory? Is there a syllabus on what has to be learnt and the recommended textbooks. Pls let me know
Obviously it is in English. Today’s paper reported that 16 universities/medical schools will now conduct the MQE exams. However it is not standardised. You will be sitting the same final year exams whcih is conducted for their own students. Depending on which uni you are allocated, you can find out about the format of the exams.
Hi Victim of MQE,
I would love to know what are you doing these days, have you passed your MQE yet, I am a graduate of unrecognized university about to sit for an MQE I have no option but to sit for the exam as I am married to a Malaysian and want to start my practice as soon as possible, I have applied for UM and USM as examination centers. I don’t know which one would be accepted.
I would like to hear from you further to help my cause. much appreciated!
thanks alot doc
Now you can do MQE at 16 other universities and private colleges UNLIMITED trials…
hello Doctor,
I, sk.shaheena, completed M.B.B.S and i have 2years of experience excluding internship. I am planning to work there as my spouse is moving to malaysia. Can you tell me the requirements to work as a medical officer in malaysia?
I am from India. I have read some blogs, in that they mentioned not to be married and not to have children. Is this correct information doctor? Because I am having a 5months old baby. I am confused with various blogs information.
thanks
I presume your spouse is a Malaysian. Well, as long as you are a registered doctor in India(with Indian Medical Council) and your undergraduate degree is recognised in Malaysia, you can apply for a contract job in Ministry of Health Malaysia. It has nothing to do whether you are married or having children. It is just that, you may be sent anywhere in malaysia and not necessarily where you request to work.
I wonder the medical schools that we have to focus is from which countries, as a new generation of medical students with great interest in doing medicine, i’m worrying from what you have written. Many of my classmates , with A-level results of CCC or DDD even studying medicine in Manipal in India, Segi Malaysia. The problem arises here is they didn’t even Q/C of these local unis
That’s exactly what I have been saying. Any tom dick and harry with money seem to be able to do medicine in this country!
Hi,doctor, ihave my diplom from russia, can i work in malayasia without clearing mci exam
If your degree is NOT recognized by MMC, then you can’t work in Malaysia. Furthermore, Malaysia do not provide internship to foreigners
CCC DDD? Are you kidding?
What proportion of students have such results? Dont mean to sound snobby or too academically oriented… but SERIOUSLY?
I’m a medical student currently studying in recognised medical university abroad.Doctor i have a question, is this medical act for the students who are studying medicine or just for those going to persue their studies in medicine???
at the moment , the gov says that only students who are going to do medicine overseas after the medical act is amended will be affected. So, those who are already overseas will not be affected. However, the government may change their mind anytime especiallly when they realise that the number of doctors are increasing exponentially.
Hi I’m SPM leaver and I was shocked when I read about the jobless doctor that will happen soon in Malaysia. My parent would want me to pursuit in medic even after I explain about this problem. In their opinion, it will not a problem when after doing a houseman, you can open your own clinic or take a part-time in several clinic. Doctor, will this can solve the jobless doctor that will be occur in my age?
TQ
First of all, you need to ask yourself whether you have the passion to do medicine and become a doctor. Don’t do medicine just because your parents say so, especially when they are not doctors themselves. The problem is whether you will get a place to do housemanship or not, in the first place!! Without completing housemanship you cannot practise anywhere as a doctor. It is not about what happens after housemanship!!
Finally, even opening a clinic after 4 years of compulsory service is not easy anymore. The latest survey shows that only 30% of GPs are actually earning more than 6K net profit a month!! Not worth it!
Sir ,i’m a medical graduate.i did my M.B.B.S. from Nepal altough i’m an Indian.I will sit for MCI exam .can i work in malaysia or i have to give any exam? can u tell me the procedure ……please….thanking u

Are you looking for an Internship post? If so, as a foreigner you will not be able to get a job as an intern unless you are married to a Malaysian.

Hi Doc,
Are you aware of any doctors who have passed MQE, I would love to get in touch with them. I am about to start my MQE training at UM or USM as I have no other option as I am married to a Malaysian. Your help would be appreciated.
I knew a few but not sure where they are
If you are to pick UM or USM which one would you go for considering MQE and why
To my knowledge, USM has better passing rate
Dear Sir, very informative article, i am a medical student that recently graduated from an unrecognized university, i got cheated by an agent n i had no choice but to pursue my studies in the unrecognized university because i was forced to pay a large sum of capital fees before i joined the Uni. anyways, i have graduated now, and looking for my best option to register myself and start working, but thinking about taking the MQE and its passing rate is somewhat scaring me,can u please spare some time to give me your best advice on what is the best thing for me to do so that i can get myself registered and start working sir. please help me, thank u and have a nice day
You got no choice other than passing the MQE in order to work in this country. Yes, the MQE is tough and there are a lot of biasness. Please do as much attachment in the hospital where you are going to sit for the exam and get close to the lecturers there before sitting for the exam.
When is this going to change?..When will the biasness be taken away? I spoke to one of the local agents and he said very soon they are going to make it compulsory for all the student who finish abroad and locally to sit for the MQE, and he said I have a better chance of passing the exam when that rule is implemented, but I think it will just worsen the situation. Lets keep our fingers crossed and hope all will be blessed. Thank U so very much for your time Doc.
I think you are not keeping up to date. The common entrance exam for all foreign doctors has been scrapped!! Pls readr my homepage!!
Sir ,i’m a medical graduate.i did my M.B.B.S and i finished my internship from china altough i’m an Indian.I will sit for MCI exam .can i work in malaysia or i have to give any exam in malaysia? can u tell me the procedure ……please….thanking u
You’re an Indian citizen? Pls contact Malaysian Medical Council to find out whether your degree is recognised.
Hellow i am a pakistani doctor,my basic degree not recognized by MMC.i am graduate of 1999.Now i am a postraduate gynecology & obs,my postgraduate degree is FCPS from Pakistan, which is equavalent to MS here. Now a days i am in Malaysia as a house wife as my husband work here. i want to work in my field here.can you please tell me,will i be able to appear in the said exam and get a job here?
If I am not mistaken, FCPS is also not recognised here in Malaysia. You need to get in touch with MMC and NSR for further info.
Sir,plz can you tell me, if a doctor holding MRCOG from UK(which is recognized by NSR)but with basic medical degree not recognized here, then can he get job here?
Can try for contract job in government hospitals in Malaysia. BUT you can be sent anywhere in Malaysia and not necessarily your current town.
sir..im malaysian…and my boy friend is an indian who currently graduated from russia.he havent pass MCA in india…but he would like to work in malaysia…as well doing intenship as other malaysian doctor…can u explain the ways to apply and steps???
As a foreigner, you will not be able to get an internship post in Malaysia unless he is married to you and his degree is recognised by MMC.
Sir,i am a malaysian citizen….done my mbbs in india in unrecognised college.i want to continue in malaysia..i cant register bcause they tell me tat we cant register bcause of college…they r asking us to sit for exam..how tobproceed sir?pls help me..
Of course. Written many times in my blog. You need to apply to MMC to sit for the MQE examination.
we are still young and im still doing my medical degree.we havent plan to get married yet. so any other way to get job in malaysia??any entrance exam for foreingner??or is it neccesary that he must pass the MCA in malaysia and then only can apply job???
It is better for him to do his intership in India and then apply for a medical officer post in Malaysia, assuming his degree is recognised in Malaysia.

Sir,
i’m an indian,i did my M.B.B.S from kathmandu medical college,Nepal.I’ve finished my internship.I gave MCI exam, result will come soon, can u tell me sir wheather i’ll able to work in malaysia or not?
I’ll b very much thankful if u reply me.
Thanking you
Firstly you need to check with Malaysian Medical Council whether your degree is recognised or not. PLs check at http://www.mmc.gov.my.
Dear sir,
First of all, i would like to thank you for all the imformative articles you have post. My question would be regrading pre-u programes. I am a SPM student, whom been thinking about getting into pre-u programes such as A-level or AUSMAT next year. However, i have applied for Malaysian Matriculation. My question to you, sir would be about choosing a suitable pre-u programes to study for medicine. I hope you could give me our opinion on this matter.
Thank You.
The best will still be STPM, A Level, IB or Australian Matriculation. Pls read all my other postings before deciding to do medicine. By the time you finish, you may not have a job
Dear sir,
Im getting married to a malaysian next year who works in Brunei at the moment and is going to be there for a good four years.Iv completed my MBBS in India last year in an “unrecognized” institute as per the schedule. Right now im doing an emergency medicine diploma in Apollo hospitals,Chennai which is recognized by rcgp,uk. So the posts on the mqe sound frightening and i need 5 years plus experience to work in Brunei. Is the mqe the only way to work in msia?
MQE is the only way to work in Malaysia unless your postgraduate qualification is recognised. Or you can get a job with a university but not do any clinical work (i.e. can’t actually treat a patient)
Yes, it is the only way. Your emergency medicine diploma is of no use.
Dear doctors, will you kindly give suggestion on my case?
My husband is a Malaysian, but i am an Indonesian, studying medicine in an unlisted medical school. Actually it is one of the best universities here (according to our national accreditation authority), but it is not even listed in “unscheduled universities and colleges eligible to sit for the MQE” somehow.
In addition to that, I’ve told that MQE passing rate is extremely low; so low that i’m not sure whether i will be able to make it.
One of the MMC officer told me to get my MD here and practice at least 10 years as a GP or 5 years as a specialist (which means additional 4-5 years of study, making it 9-10 years in total) in order to be registered in Malaysia.
Question: is there any other options beside those 2? Well, MQE is not really an option for me, because the school is not even in the list.
I wish to serve in Malaysia, because my husband and children are Malaysians. Additional 10 years away from my family is too long for me.
We are Christian Chinese (if that matters).
Thank you for taking time reading this, and more for answering it.
MGBU
You can still try to apply to MMC to sit for the MQE exam as you are married to a Malaysian. If not they may consider after few years of working experience in Indonesia. Or try sitting for MRCP/MRCS.
Dear doctor..I am also Indonesian graduated from UPH..and now because of the same reason (married to malaysian) i have to do MQE now at Universiti Malaya…. 2 weeks more for exam and I am very nervous as it is very different system here…. can i have your contact? My email : essarvirginia@gmail.com salam kenal dok
pagal72@gmail.com
Hi dr Paga. I wrote u before when i am doing my MQE 6 month training in UM. I passed the exam along with 3 other people who are also foreigners.
We were told when we passed MQE we can do provisional registration. But now there are new rules that foreigners need to have SPM BM in order to be registered. It is still being proposed but KKM BSM said it will be implemented on us. MMC failed inform us about this….if we were told earlier we could’ve taken november paper…but now we have to wait for next july paper..that is if we are able to sit because i heard that it is only for repeater.. and come on! the new rules are ridiculous! I only from Indonesia, seberang je pun.. i can clerk patient in bahasa melayu because we have similar root of language. And i dont think i’ll need to master sastra or pandai buat karangan to communicate with patient. But even so it is totally unfair for us because no one informed us earlier! MMC put their hands off saying that it is beyond their jurisdiction..KKM now wont accept us despite we passed MQE…
I know now we as foreigners will only add on the piling numbers of doctors…we came here just to follow our spouses..what will we do to have a medical degree but cant do anything! this new rules shud not effect us because we were not informed!
Can you suggest us what to do next? We are hopeless now…
So for future MQE takers..now MMC clearly saying that even u passed MQE it wud not guarantee u a job..might as well save ur RM 25,000 to do something else…
There is NO guarantee anywhere in this world that you will get a job if you pass MQE. That is a fact. It all depends on the availability of post. Since the number of HO post are now limited, KKM is just finding excuses not to give you a job since you are a foreigner. So, being a spouse now do not give any advantage compared to a year ago. Even PRs are told the same.
This has nothing to do with MMC. MMC is never the employer.
I suggest you try university hospitals.
Welcome to Malaysia where rules changes everyday
Sir,
I’m an Indian, finished my MBBS from kathmandu university,I dn’t have MCI registration number,i’ve to clear MCI screening exam.Sir i want to take admission in MS (orthopaedic). Will you help me is there any college which is recognised by MCI.
THANKING YOU.
Are you talking about India or Malaysia?
Malaysia sir…Is there any chance to get admission in Malaysian university as a foreign student ……
Malaysian university do allocate few post for foreign students but you must make sure that the degree is recognised in your country and Malaysia will not give you a job.
I’m not thinking about job there sir,i want to do post graduate degree(ms orthopaedic),i’ll be very much thankful to you sir if u tell me the name of the college n university then i’ll try to know in our council whether it is recognised or not….and after then i’ll able to do the needful, hope u’ll help me sir.
Thanking you .I’ll wait for your reply sir.
Thanking you……..
Please try University of Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and University Science Malaysia.
Hello Dr Paga,
I’m an avid reader of your blog and really appreciate your honesty and frankness. Its certainly helped me alot. I’m reading Medicine now in the UK with 4 years to go till I graduate. Would it be possible for me to complete my housemanship in Singapore or internship in Australia? I understand it will be extremely competitive but will it help if I were to graduated with at least upper second class and possess a Singaporean PR? Are there any additional examinations I will need to take as well?
Australia may be a bit tough because you may end up being lumped together with all the other IMG’s…
But singapore is really a valid option, at least as a stepping stone to further your career. They are actively looking for doctors and have just opened new hospitals. In fact, they send people to head hunt in other countries. So your chances are very very good.
Firstly, you got a long way to go and things can change along the way. Singapore will be a better option but you must understand that Singapore is changing to residency system based on US system. I am not sure whether Malaysia will recognise this if you do have intention to come back to Malaysia. BTW, I hope you are self sponsored!
With Malaysia’s mediocre housemen, comes a generation of mediocre medical officers, training even more mediocre housemen.
With Malaysia’s mediocre medical officers, comes a generation of mediocre master’s students or MRCP holders. Especially if there is a pressure to open the floodgates to specialist position.
With Malaysia’s future mediocre specialists, why will Malaysia not recognize other Malaysians who did their specialization overseas? It should be a joy for Malaysia that Malaysians with Masters (Sg), who went through proper well constructed training program, to come back to Malaysia to serve.
Maybe the residency system is too fast tract? But I don’t see how Malaysia’s 2-3 patients per houseman, shift system without consultant ward round, 30-40 houseman per ward etc can be any better.
As they say, many times, the desire to learn is environment dependent.
Yes I am which is why I prefer to work in Singapore, I’m sorry but could you elaborate further on the residency system? How exactly does it work?
After internship you go directly into speciality training. Even the internship is modified based on what speciality you want to do.
Dear sir,
I am a Medical Officer in Anaesthesia field in more than 10 years experience, has been working in MOH of Srilanka,Graduated as a MBBS doctor in a Srilankan university which is recognized by the WHO(AVICENNA) and IMA(FAIMER) but I couldn’t found my university name in the second schedule of MMC, other than 2 other Universities of Srilanka.
I discussed with my medical council regarding this issue and they gave me a letter indicating that my university course is 5 years course and it has the same curriculum like as the other recognized universities of Srilanka.
Is it possible to get my registration at MMC ,If I appeal to MMC with this Supportive letter.?
You can try based on your experience of working for 10 years.
dear sir,
I m from pakistan. I have done my mbbs and post graduate diploma in obstretics and gynaecology from pakistan. how can I get registered with MMC n how to get job over here.
thanks
Malaysia has stopped recruiting foreigners since we are heading for surplus of doctors.
Diploma is not recognised here.
If your basic degree is recognised by MMC, you can try university hospitals but chances are slim.
Thank you sir, ill try my best.
u just one crap u know that…u make me sick with ur dumb post…can u be supportive to the doctors out there…not condeming them with sarcastic remarks…doesnt mean that u have so many qualification ur the best doctor in the whole world…u must have done some mistakes too right…dont try to talk very smart…everyone is a human being….everyone need time to learn…if some people wants to be a doctor because of the parents wish what is the wrong with that?isn it a nice thing to make ur parents happy and just try the best…i dont understand with u…y dont u post something useful for houseman out there ,to tell them how to survive housemanship,to support them.give important clues….government is bad to us already ….n u make thing worse by posting some dumb posts of urs…..dont think ur too smart…..ok ..just telling u that i hate ur dumb blog…just read it while doing some google search….and pls try to be more helpful…
step 1 of problem solving is recognizing that there is a problem.
step 2 involves trying to identify it’s causes.
This “dumb blog” provides alot of #1 and serves as a forum for discussing about #2.
Recently, there have been a downwards trend in the quality of housemen, with relatively mediocre students doing medicine from private universities. This blog highlights the problems it is causing (#1).
I have a high amount of respect for Dr Pagalavan for doing all this on his own initiative –> spending time to write about things he cares about.
He’s not doing this for money… and im sure his time (a consultant’s time) is worth quite abit. He responds to questions very diligently by blogger standards and seems to have a real interest in the safety of patients.
I do not sense malice in his posts. Unlike yours. Post some intelligent comments responding to the actual content of his post and you will be taken seriously. Google “ad hominem”.
Denial symptom. Probably suddenly realised that he went into the wrong field and no turning back now. Government is bad to you? Then why you are still staying? Resign in 24 hours and go overseas.
Think before u talk and that’s the same applied to think before u blog. For me, Dr. Pagalavan applied both of the fundamental ‘law’ stated above and I fully support what he did for the future of malaysian doctor. I am not here for finger pointing but here to say a big ‘Thank You’ to such a gentleman who sacrificed his golden time juz for the future of u ‘beloved’ grandchildren in malaysia.
He could be blogging about his holiday encounter in Paris than blogging about the problem of medical student and doctors in malaysia. 🙂
fuck u u asshole…go n eat ur own shit u dumb
Hello sir, I just want to ask you something. I’m planning to do AUSMAT next year (January intake). I want to do dentistry. Preferably in local public universities. Can I apply to do dentistry in local uni’s like UM, USM with my Ausmat results? Or should I do STPM to get a place in public uni.
Will dentist be saturated in this country in coming years like medical doctors?
It would be very helpful if you could enlighten me on this. thank you. =)
Unfortunately, local public universities do not take anything other than STPM or Matriculation.
At the moment dentistry is still not saturated but I am also beginning to hear that a lot of students are doing dentistry in Indonesia and Egypt but not too bad like medicine.
USM do take other students with qualifications other than STPM and Matriculation for Medicine and Dentistry, due to its autonomy to select students since getting APEX university status. But nearly all the medical and dental students who do not take STPM and Matriculation, took A-Levels. I had never heard of any students entering USM medical or dental school using AUSMAT result.
Dear Sir
I am a medical graduate from Angles University Foundation, Philippines, and I have my permanent registration from Medical Council of India. I would like to know whether I can apply for a PG in any Malaysian University? Or whether I can apply as a medical officer in any hospital in Malaysia? I look forward to your reply, as I am unable to get a reply for this query from any other medium.
Thank You
Geoffrey
Malaysian university offers very limited number of post for Master;s programme to foreigners. You need to apply to the respective universities. However, your undergraduate degree need be recognised by Malaysian Medical Council. I don’t think you can get a MO post in Malaysia currently since we are having doctors glut recently.
Dr, im finishing my Canadian Pre-U this Jun ans im supposed to pursue medicine in India in JJM Medical College in Karnataka. I was supposed to enroll in Melaka Manippal, but it came to a shock that MMC does not want a combined results of SPM and O-levels, as i re-sat for my O-levels because i obtained a C in SPM. MMC only allows students who are doing their degree full time in overseas to have a combination of SPM and O-levels. From what i hear, the sole reason for this move is to make sure more students go overseas and and when they come back there is a medical qualifying exam which is now applicable to only those who studied in non-recognised colleges? I read about this the exam in Star Newspaper last year, but has it been implemented already?
There has always been an exam for those who graduated from unrecognised uni overseas. The initial proprosal is to have a common entry exam for all overseas graduates which was not supported by our great politicians.
As far as I know, if you have taken the complete O level subjects, should be OK unless you only sat for certain subjects which you did not do well in SPM.
Dear Sir,
I am Hassan Javed , student of final year MBBS in Sindh Medical College (DUHS) .
Sir i have a query, i am planning for my further higher studies in MALAYSIA after my MBBS . what is the procedure for applying in malaysia after simple MBBS . Is there any lincensing examination like USMLE for america ?
Kindly reply to my query
Thank you
If you are not a Malaysian, you CAN”t apply for housemanship in Malaysia unless you are married to a Malaysian.
Dear Sir,
I am a doctor in Mauritius and would like to pursue my master studies in ophthalmology in malaysia.however the univ i have graduated from, is not found in the list of recognised universities.i have completed 2 years internship here in mauritius and am already registered at the mauritius medical council.despite that,i am willing to give it a try and sit for the malaysian medical council exam.i wanted to join univ sains malaysia.ive learnt from your blog (which i find very informative!) about how bias the system is but could u please help me out?any advice on how to procede would be much appreciated.
thank you.
Are you a Malaysian? If not, I presume your changes of even taking the Malaysian MQE is very unlikely to happen. Thus, the chances of getting a Master’s post in Malaysia is even more unlikely
Thank you for ur reply!actually i am mauritian.so i guess that i better try my luck somewhere else…too bad.thanks for ur advice!:)
sir! i am a SPM leaver and currently doing my foundations and going to further my studies in RSMU(russia state medical university) and i am worry about the exam that you have mentioned earlier.. any guides for me? i am really interested in medical field but it seems that the number of doctors are overflowing and i am worry about the housemanship things and also the recognitions.
Beware of the agent that u signed up to..May i know u SPM result? Is u SPM good enough to study medicine? Anyway, the things that i wanted to highlight here is finding a trustworthy agent…Please dun be fooled by their sweet promise. if u’re into medical field juz for the sake of earning big money and be glamour, please give up medicine…..
All these foundation studies are a scam as far as I am concerned! Have you got your NOC? The exam mentioned above is not being implemented.
However with the overflowing of doctors soon, you may not get a job if you do not have NOC from MOHE. Furthermore, I would not recommend russia!
I would like to persue my degree in medicine in indonasia. My Spm results meet’s the requirement and I checked in MMC website UNiversity Sumatera Utara and University Padjajaran is a reconized university in Malaysia. Which university from this both you would suggest me to apply
why dun u go UGM(Universitas Gadjah Mada) ????
May i know u SPM result?? how many A+ u got??
Gajahmada and Padjajaran are ok
How about Andalas University??
Have not heard much about it
The agent were recommending me to go USU…..Wats the difference between USU n Padjajaran actually. They are not really sendin students 2 gajah mada this year due to earthquakes.
There are earthquakes everywhere in Indonesia!! I think they don’t send to Gajah mada because their entrance qualification may be more strict
A friend of mine went to USU for a few months and then withdrew from the course. According to him some teachers there are not upto standard and some even teach in Indonesian. That’s why i feel no regrets for rejecting the JPA offering in USU. However this was what happened 5 years back and things may have changed now.
As far as I know University of Indonesia and Gadjah Mada are the best two medical schools in Indonesia
Ok thx alot 4 all ur advices….
To be careful that some university in Indonesia do not have essay question to test the students……..MCQ entirely cant do much to access students knowledge…..
im sorry doc, have you heard of university of airlangga surabaya indonesia?how’s the quality (HO,residents graduated from there?)thank you.
UGM (Universitas Gadjah Mada) ranking in the world is better than almost all Malaysia’s public and private medical school….There is a tough and strict screening entrance exam and interview for the prospective medical students. BTW, do beware of some agents who used to promise a lots of nonsense…..
is medic ed ok? I am plaaning to study dentistry anyway
as long as the university they send is recognised by Malaysian Dental Council
in UGM, the marking and assessment systems are not very good.
i would highly recommend University of Indonesia, as they have the reputation of being the better university/
and i am writing this based on my personal experience, graduating from UGM
do not come here (usu) . it’s terrible here. I’m a final year dentistry student here, and I have firsthand experience with their system. You’re on your own speaking of true studying, you have to whip yourself for extra knowledge. You get shit from lecturers here, some are good but mostly are just come and go express kind. All I see in usu medicine course, all MCQ! and students even develop ways to cheat the system, through flawed remedial system, bribery.
For your future sake, stop dwelling in the doctor dream.
Go pursuit anything else, and don’t be a mommy’s boy.
You hearing this from me, and you will thank me.
And thanks Dr.Pagavalan for this great platform, keep it up sir.
my daughter insists on doing medicine and did her foundation in science programme in president college. she is now finding it difficult to enter any universities in malaysia coz she needs to clear up her spm papers. please advice if she were to take o levels and enter a university like mahsa would her qualification be recognised by the mmc later on?
The minimum standards to enter medical school is clearly stated here http://mmc.gov.my/v1/docs/MINIMUM%20CRITERIA%20V2.pdf. All medical colleges in this country need to comply with this by right! So, if the universities do not accept her then she do not have the qualifications
sir,im a medical student from malaysia studying in india currently.going to finish soon.i was wondering if my fiancee who is an indian will be able to practise here.if so,what does she have to do?she is also an mbbs student, from JNMC,india.thank you
If she is married to you, yes she can apply for HO post in Malaysia. Whether she will get a post or not depends on availability.
My daughter got 5A+, 2As, 1A- and 1B+ for chemistry. She is very
keen to do medicine and already register to do form 6. I want her to do foundation in science for 1 year which will lead to medicine locally but at the same time not sure which private university to enroll her. After reading your article recently in the MMA magazine, I am not sure of sending her for medicine. Since you have a lot of experience can you guide her on what other option she can choose apart from medcine and dentistry. I am a nurse by profession and already advise her but she is adamant and wants to take up only medicine. I just pray hard that her STPM results will be good enough for her to do medicine in the local university. Tq
Ask her to read my blog especially “For Future Doctors” page. After that, if she is still interested in medicine for what medicine is all about, ask her to go for STPM and get an excellent result to enter local public medical school. Foundation studies are a big scam as far as I am concerned. With the glut of doctors after 2015, having a degree from local uni will give you preference in getting a job.
Hello sir, I am from Srilanka. I have completed degree from st. Kitts university. Can i do internship in Malaysia?. What is the name of examination?. what all procedure i have to do?. please give me detail answer for this. Srilankan exam will come end of this year.
Malaysia do not offer housemanship for foreigners unless you are married to a Malaysian.
Dear Dr,
If Singaporeans from Monash Malaysia are not allowed to do housemanship in Malaysia, and Monash Malaysia is not recognised by Singapore, so what happen to all these students? Did they finally manage to get internship somewhere?
Yes, Australia
I was in Monash Malaysia (KL) three years ago, I was told only one Singaporean (2nd year student) was doing medicine there, taking the risk of no internship in Malaysia. Most Singaporeans go to IMU for its overseas partner medical schools.
Yup. The first 2 batches had Singaporeans(almost 10) but when they realised that SMC do not recognise them, the numbers started to drop. Same will happen to Newcastle.
dear Dr..I am a doctor and I do my mbbs from jiamusi university china.and I live in Pakistan.and now i complete my house job.I wants to do job in malaysia so kindly please give me some adivice.that how i apply for the job..
No university in China is recognised in Malaysia at the moment. Thus, you would not be able to get a job in Malaysia.
Dear DR.
I just wanted to know the career of emergency medicine in Malaysia as well as Singapore, after completing masters from uni Malaya in emergency medicine.
And also the chances of passing MRCP during the masters course. i have come to know that UM conduct 3 phases of MRCP.
pls help me by giving some idea.
Master’s is not recognised in Singapore. In Malaysia, your job will be in government service only. Private hospitals generally do not hire emergency physicians. The government sector is still short of Em physicians.
UM conducts all the 3 parts of MRCP but once each every year.
thank you very doctor.
one more thing i want to know,
after masters i want to do job in singapore. in that case MRCP will be helpful i guess. can u suggest ne other option after my course so that i can get job over there. i mean any fellowship or training in my field. emergency physicians supposed to get job in ICU , right doctor? in that case private hospitals should hire these group of doctors.
pls give me ur suuggestion.
Emergency physician works in the Emergency department/Accident&Emergency department. To work in Singapore, your basic medical degree must be recognised by Singapore Medical Council. The other option is if you pass MRCP or MRCS or MRCOG.
Dear Dr Paga:
I m a 4th year medical student from AIMST university.
After getting MRCP in Msia m I eligible to enter singapore specialist training programme then work in singapore as a specialist??
After that is it possible for me to practice in US??
Thank u very much…
Depends on availability of training post. You can work there as a MO after passing MRCP. It does not guarantee you a training post. US: NO you need to sit and pass USMLE
Dear Dr, I don’t exactly understand the term ‘saturated’ in the Malaysian medical field. I’m a little confused because i did a small research on the net and found that the doctor to population ratio is of 1:859 (as at 2010) and the m’sian gov is trying to push it to 1:600 by 2015 and 1:400 by 2020.
So as of now we are lacking doctors right? So why does everyone keep using the term ‘saturated’?
Dear vickybakes,
If you are outsider (not in medical field) or some bookworm medical students, you will surely know Malaysia is having doctors glut!!! newspaper, ministry always give the wrong and outdated information. What a pathetic… Mr L said in 2012 resently: Msia is having about 3500-5000 dortors to join the work force anually. But the exact amount done in research/paper in 2011 is 6000+ anually. Besides, the number is increasing with the new MQE, new private medical school and new recognition. The place provided for training is only 6000+ (which is almost a constant). So, logical thinking, do you think doctors will end up, not to say jobless but becoming a taxi driver, hawker and etc…
sorry to become busy body.
You must understand that the doctor:population ratio is calculated by using all the registered doctors in the country, public and private included. With the current production of new doctors which is about 6000 this year and will reach 8000 by 2015, we will achieve the ratio of 1: 600 way before 2016 and 1: 400 by 2017. 50% of the current 36 medical schools in the country is yet to produce the graduates. So, you can do the maths!
Secondly, we do not have enough training centres to train these doctors. Thus, most of the training centres for housemen are saturated with housemen. There are also NOt enough specialist/trainers to train these junior doctors. That is what you call “saturated”.
Hello sir, i just graduated from a Malaysian University but i am a foreigner and they seemed to have passed a law stating that all foreigners cannot apply for a job in Malaysia as HO/MO and they seem to be accepting only specialists.
As i have already had a stable relationship with a Malaysian girl for 4 years i would like to know what can i do to tweek the system to land a job here as if i go back to my home country i would not have any knowledge of tropical diseases…
The law has always been there. Foreigners will not be given HO post in Malaysia unless you are married to a Malaysian.
So, the only option is to get married. Even then, your job will be on contract basis.
With all due respect the law has just been passed 3 months ago and prior to that alot of foreigners have been working in Malaysia as HO.
NOPE, those foreigners were married to a Malaysian. As for MOs, yes they were a lot of foreign MOs in Malaysia under contract due to shortage of doctors.
Malaysia never gave housemanship post to foreigners unless you are married to a Malaysian or PR! The law has been there for many years and you can see it at MMC website
BTW, there were also many contract foreign MOs (appointed as MOs!!) who were working and functioning as HOs. Don’t get confused with these group of people.
This is from MMC website which has been there for many years. Even if you are a local graduate there was never a guaranteed place for housemanship. I was with Monash before and Singaporean who graduated in 2009 could not get HO post:
Note : ‘Housemanship’ or ‘Internship’ is the period of resident medical practice before full registration as stipulated in the Medical Act 1971.
Provisional registration is available only to practitioners with the following nationality, rights and qualifications:
Holding a basic medical degree from a recognised institution (as per the Second Schedule ( ) of the Medical Act 1971);
Malaysian citizens;
For non-citizens, exemption is given only to local graduates or those related or married to Malaysians.
“For non-citizens, exemption is given only to local graduates or those related or married to Malaysians.” wont i be under the the category of local graduates???
Yes but MMC only gives provisional registration to practise BUT it is Ministry of Health who gives you the job! As far as I know, MOH only gives foreigner a HO job if she/he is married to a Malaysian.
i guess i shall be getting married soon!! ur all invited!!! Thanks for the input…
Hope to meet u in person soon if i do get a job….
Hi
I am Misbah . I did my MBBS from Dow Medical College which is recognized by Malaysian Medical Council, I also did 1 year internship in Civil Hospital Karachi, recognized by PMDC (Pakistan Medical and Dental Council) My spouse is working in Malaysia for 2 years. I want to do my postgraduation in Pediatrics in Malaysia! Will I be accepted. do I have to give any exam if yes then which one!! please guide me.
waiting for a reply!
.
Is your spose a Malaysian? The local Masters programme is mainly for Malaysians. However some slots are given for foreign students. You need to contact the respective universities for further info.
Hi Misbah…what is your current status? As I have almost same situation as you.
kindly rep asap.
Also I want to ask of doing MRCP would make a difference?
Hi again!
The UKM medical centre says that I have to give IELTS although the medium of language in my University was English! Then MMC will give a registration number after submission of my documents. I will be attatched for 3 months in the concerned department and then they will decide on the basis of my work and a exam that I have to pass. But I can not get the details what sort of exam is it going to be so that I start preparing for it! Will MRCP help me in any way!
Thank you so much for ur precious time
Each uni got their own pre Master’s exam. MRCP may or may not help as post for foreign students are very much limited
dear doc, is doing medic in indon uni is unrecognized? but my agent is convincing me that its recognized…. or doing dentistry in india is much better? in a gud uni in india?
please check whether the uni is in this list http://mmc.gov.my/v1/docs/Jadual%20Kedua%2011-12-09.pdf
Dear Doctor,
I got C+ for my physic in SPM, and 3.74CGPA in Matriculation. I’m planning to further my study in medicine, but the minimum entry qualification stated by MMC is 5 Bs each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics,Mathematics (or Additional Mathematics) and another subject at School Certificate level or its equivalent. How do I write the clearance letter to MMC?
Thank you
Based on this minimum criteria, you don’t qualify to do medicine in Malaysia or to get NOC to do medicine elsewhere
I’ve registered to AUCMS, and got the offer letter, but they asked me to do the clearance letter to MMC for my physic before submitted the registration form.
Yes, which means MMC must release you inorder for you to be able to enter the medical school. It is up to MMC. It is a sort of appeal to MMC.
Hallo Doctor
I am a graduate from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria Nigeria which is not in the list of MMC, however it is recognized by Indian medical council and Royal college. i also did fellowship from West African College of Surgeons i Obs and Gyn.i have 8 years of experience in Obs and Gyn. my husband has now relocated to Malaysia in the university of Nottingham i want to join him. What is the possibilities of getting MMC registration thank you
Both your degrees is not recognised in Malaysia thus it will be difficult to get a job/MMC registration. Please contact MMC for further info.

wats procedure for fresh graduate mbbs doctor
i have done my MBBS from china i m fresh graduate i want to apply for a job in malaysia wats procedure can u plz help methrough email
Are you a Malaysian? None of China medical schools are recognised in Malaysia at the moment. You need to apply to MMC to sit for the MQE examination.
Sir, I’m yuges.. currently working as an interns in Vinayaka Missions,Salem(recog by MMC). I’m in a deep dilemma.. as I’m looking forward to going either gen. Medicine or Pediatrics post graduation. Is there any private college in india that offers malaysian recognized post graduate seat? IF NO, please suggest me how can i enroll into govt when i finish my MD course in 3 years time. my varsity in a recognized one. i might continue my MD in Vinayaka Missions Medical College itself. its cheap and feel like i’ve known the world in my college. please give me some good suggestion sir. will wait for a reply. Thank you 🙂
No Indian postgraduate degree is recognised in malaysia. So, if you ask me there is no point doing it. However, I have seen some who the government do recognise as a surgeon after 5 years of working in Malaysia as a MO after obtaining Master’s from India. BUT things can change in the future. Master’s from India is not in the latest list of recognised post graduate degrees which was released recently :https://pagalavan.com/2012/05/31/for-future-doctors-recognised-specialist-degrees-and-period-of-training/
i want to do mbbs in china or philippines. but could not pick up one. im in a dilemma whether sholud i do it in china or philippines. can u suggest which country would be more prefferable for medicine.
None of the medical schools in China or philippines are recognised in Malaysia. MY advise : don’t bother
There are 36 medical schools in Malaysia, why don’t you try them
Dear doctor
I am a Maldivian doctor, graduated from Tribhuvan university , Nepal.I have checked the list which was put out in 2011 and no university of Nepal exist in the list.
I want to do my postgraduation in radiology from Malaysia…I have 3+ years of post graduation clinical experience. To my knowledge there are 2 maldivian doctors who graduated from the same university as me doing postgraduation in Malasia..Therefore i would like to know if there is any possibility for me to get a seat, and if so whats the procedure(whether to do attachment or/and an exam
Thank you
You need to apply directly to the universities. Only 3 universities conduct Master’s in radiology: University Malaya, University Kebangsaan Malaysia and University Science Malaysia. If your degree is not recognised in Malaysia, you can’T work in Malaysia. You must also remember that Malaysian Master’s may not be recognised in your country.
Dear sir,
I’m a MBBS doctor from Bangladesh. I want to do my post graduation on pediatrics from Malaysia. I’ve 2 years of clinical experience excluding Internship here in Bangladesh. what I need to do for my post graduation?
for info, my uncle is a Malaysian.
Firstly, your degree must be recognised in Malaysia, by MMC. Secondly, Malaysia generally do not provide Master’s training for foreigner’s except for some limited post. You can contact UM, UKM or USM directly for further info.
sir,
Sorry for disturbing you again. should i go through any exam like MMC exam for license? and i mailed to UM and UKM yesterday telling them, i want to do my PG there, but they haven’t replied me yet. Do you think MBBS from Bangladesh is recognized by MMC or not?
Only 2 Universities in Bangladesh recognised in Malaysia: http://mmc.gov.my/v1/docs/Jadual%20Kedua%2011-12-09.pdf Thus, if you are not from one of this uni, you need to sit and pass the entrance exam by MMC. This does not guarantee you a post in any hospitals in Malaysia as Malaysia generally do not provide postgraduate training to foreigners. If UM, UKM and USM do not have any post then you will likely not get any. Furthermore, the Master’s intake is in June every year.
no problem with master’s. i want to sit for entrance exam by MMC. will you please tell me about the whole procedure???
I’ll be very great full to you.
you can visit MMC website http://www.mmc.gov.my for further info. Again I would want to warn you that Malaysia is having doctors glut at the moment and the chances of you getting a post here is very slim.
Okay, thanks a lot sir
can i know usm accept student from aimst foundation
Most foundation studies are only accepted within the same university. That’s how they “catch” the students.
USM only accepts STPM, A-Level and Matriculation students.
i am a student studying in aismt now, after finishing foundation, can i apply to enter usm?
no. USM only accepts some A-Levels and STPM students. You have to have at least straight A*/As to be admitted and will be subjected to interview and aptitude test.
I think you can’t even go into IMU with AIMST foundation.
that mean now im the foundation student in aimst. i dont have the chance to enter gorvenment university already, right?
Then have any scholarship can help me?
Yup. Even scholarship, you need either STPM, matriculation and A-levels. I have not heard any Foundation students from private uni getting government scholarship
How about perdana university?
NOPE.
That’s really nice reading your blog..I am from India and i finished my M.B.B.S from China. I would likely to work in Malaysia. I likely to know the exam pattern of getting license in Malaysia.
Malaysia do not give internship post to foreigners unless you are married to a Malaysian. Furthermore, no degree from China is recognized in Malaysia
Dear Pagalavan,
Need to just point out some errors in your column which are very obvious.
1.You are not aware that local medical schools are throughly scrutinised on a regular basis by MOHE/MMC & MOH to ensure that standards are sustained and met.The schools are within distance for them to pay a visit and just on a complain from medical students from any particular college, they act immediately.
When such is the scrutiny, how can you compare a local medical school with that of overseas one when the team spends a day just listening to a cooked up story and obtains accreditition. So how come you call for a common examinations to be conducted for all graaduates. If you look at India ,The UK,USA,Ausratlia &NZ,examinations are only meant for graduates from overseas countries. The idea is to protect our local turf. Not deprive someone trained locally to be subject to exams.
As you have not been involved in any local accreditition process ,guess you got to restraint your comments to what you know.
2.You are totally biased that all caucassian colleges are superior ,without being involved in any teaching programmes in any one of the colleges.
Fact remains you have not worked in any Caucasian Colleges overseas and and not qualified to assume our local colleges are inferior.
Ask many of the Hospital consultants, they feel our students can compare an d under many circumstanes they are better off especially when it comes to clinical examination and diagnosis.I am not sure if you have worked overseas,i have worked in Med Schools in England,Australia and Scandavania and can vouch that our students are far superior,i mean the good majority.
4 10,000 IMMG graduates were matched in the matching programme for jobs in the US in 2012.You claim that your friends who probably scored less grades in the STEP1 & 2 ,and hence was not offered a job in the United States .
So can i urge you to check the facts you offer so that the advise that you offer is evidence based and not personal ones.
Concerned Consultant
I am sure you also do not know what I was involved with before. FYI, I have sat through the so called accreditation process by MMC and MQA. It is nothing great and many at times, it is just a desk audit. Many infos on paper is NOT what actually happens. Students usually do not complain as they are also afraid of their future. Some students are even pre trained in what to say before the accreditation people arrive!! I have spoken to enough people in enough medical schools and having worked in one before, I can tell you that most medical schools in Malaysia are not up to standard. YES, I do agree that some are good, but it is in the minority. BTW, MOH is never involved in accreditation process except MMC.
I am all for a common entrance exam, be it for overseas graduates or local graduates. There is nothing to afraid of if you feel our students are of good quality.
I may not have worked directly under a foreign medical school but I have worked with a branch campus. I have compared their teaching standards etc and I can tell you that the standards vary. The only difference is the healthcare system. Our healthcare system Demands a more well rounded students compared to other countries as their graduates have a better structured training program after graduating.
But I must agree that not all their products are good BUT the fact remains that they do have a very stringent entry criteria compared to our medical schools.
As for IMGs in US, if you really care reading this blog properly, you will realize that most of the infos about US do not come from me. It is from people who have tried and who are working in US. FYI, I have seen many students who tried to enter US but failed. The competition is great. You said 10k students were matched, how many are Malaysian? I never said you will never get a post. I am just saying that it is not as easy as you think due to stiff competition. Many who do get residency post end up not getting a fellowship post.
BTW, you email looks funny
If you look at this fact http://www.ecfmg.org/forms/factcard.pdf, out of 11k IMG participants only 44% manage to be matched (about 4k) Malaysia is not even in the top 20 countries where the IMG comes from.
US medical students DO TAKE the USMLE – the very same USMLE that foreign medical graduates take.
In fact, you’d be surprised to note that the end of rotation paper exams in EVERY US MEDICAL SCHOOL is standardized. It is made by a national board. So this means end of rotation MCQ in Harvard medical school is the same standard as the end of rotation MCQ in University of Miami. Created by a national body, as a means of standardization. It is not the exact same questions, but it has the same level of difficulty. They call this the “shelf” exams. The concept is that – only by standardization can you really compare med students from 1 uni to the other.
Otherwise, how else can you say a students in one university, be it locally or foreign are better or not?
Malaysia has a long way more to go.
Hello Sir, I am currently in the Malaysian Matriculation Programme and end in 2013. Due to tough competition and what you have posted on there being no jobs when I finally graduate,
what would be a good choice considering that I have passion and is keen on doing either medicine, dentistry or veterinary sciences.
and
Could you please advise on which institution both private and local or overseas to further my studies and does not cost a bomb, which will provide a good chance for a job in the future.
Thank you very much.
Dear Sir, I completed medical graduation from India and my institute is recognised by MMC. Within few months I will get European nationality after which my family is planning to move to Malaysia. I would appreciate if you can guide me about getting into medical field in Malaysia. I have two years of working experience excluding internship. Will it be helpful if I do MRCP 1 before moving to Malaysia? please advice me.
Thank you..!!
What is your reason of moving to Malaysia? Are you married to a Malaysian? With 4 years of experience, you will find it difficult to get a job in government hospitals. Generally, private sector do not employ foreign doctors.
@ Pagalavan Sir,
My husband is planning to move to Malaysia. He is a Dutch citizen. can I apply for MQE ?
Is your husband going to be employed in Malaysia? If your basic degree is recognised by MMC, you don’t need to sit for MQE but does not mean you will get a job.
If your husband is employed here, the chances to get a job in government service under contract is better
hi sir,
i read all comments from top till end but still confused kindly guide me;
My nam z dr.kainat.i did my MBBS from sindh medical college karachi.PAKISTAN.i did my 1 year houseship in jinnah hospital karachi in 2011.
by the end of same year got married n came in malaysia. My husband is Pakistani doing his job in Malaysia .Now i want to continue my professional journey as a doctor what should i do?
do i registered?do i appered 4 any exams?if they are not consider my 1year housejob or not allow me for housemanship in malaysi thn what would i do to continue my profession.what about MOs or what else u will suggest me for this.
Kindly reply me.will be very thanksful to you
thanks,
I presume you are NOT a Malaysian. Firstly, you need to check with MMC website whether your basic degree is recognised in malaysia. Then you need to apply to Ministry of Health to get a job. Chances are very slim as there are enough doctors in malaysia at the moment. Chances in University Hospitals are better (3 of them in Malaysia). Since your husband is employed in Malaysia, you may get a better chance to get employed here. At the moment, private sector do not employ foreign doctors. Thus your only option is government sector.
you say ” Chances in University Hospitals are better (3 of them in Malaysia)”
where are they ?
why the chance to get a job for foreign doctors are better in university hospital ?
Does it mean that Many Malaysian newly-qualified -from-internship doctors avoid working in univ hospital ?
Isn’t better to work in Univ hospital where you can learn a lot from consultant and the univ hospital is usually equipped with library ?
UH, HUKM and HUSM
Because locals do not like to work as service MOs in these Hospitals. You will know the politics when you start to work there.
Their internship post are VERY limited unlike MOH hospitals. Some of these interns are still under MOH and need to go back to MOH hospitals upon finishing their internship.
Learn a lot? That depends how you define it. Many in universty hospitals don’t learn a lot due to various hierarchy in the department set up: HO, service MO, mAster’s student YEAR 1 till 4, junior lecturer, senior lecturer, ass prof and prof!
@ Pagalavan Sir
Thankyou very much for the useful advice..!!
@ Pagalavan Sir
My husband is not employed yet in Malaysia, but he will try for it soon.
thankyou so very much for ur guideline sir
Dear Sir,
I have applied for Master of Radiology Programme at UM and they have called me for a written exam and interview. Could you kindly tell me the format of the written exam, whether it is MCQ only or it includes short/essay type questions also. Also could you kindly tell me the topics for the written exam.
Thanks in advance.
I have no idea and these are new ways of selecting students. Previously, most of the Master’s program do not have exams.
It really puzzle me that why some of the candidate never do any homework on how the entry exam is conducted or any other detail related to the master program that they are applying. As though they choose the type of discipline by throwing a dart. The purpose of the entry exam is to select candidate with basic knowledge especially knowledge related to the field they choose. At least this is the way to select candidate who has shown interest in the particular field. The least that one can do is to call up the current Master trainee or talk to the professor or consultant in Radiology from the particular U, not asking someone from the blog.
Dear Sir,
Thank you for the reply. I have been trying to contact the university but am not able to reach them by phone or even get an email reply hence thought of checking the website for some information on the examination pattern.
If you really really want the course, walk into their department or clinics, ask to see the Master trainees or consultants. Give them a treat of lunch or tea, I am sure they are happy to talk to you. If they got time to see the drug rep, they will see you too.
SIR, I WANT TO JOIN POSTGRADUATE PROGRAM MS SURGERY IN UKM , I CAME TO MALAYSIA IN OCT;12 AND DONE MY ATTACHMENT IN UKM AND THEY ACCEPT ME FOR JUNE ’13 MS PROGRAM BY MY PROFESSOR, BUT WHEN THEY ASK ME TO GO AND REGISTER YOURSELF WITH MMC THEN I CAME TO KNOW THAT MY UNIVERSITY IS NOT IN THE RECOGNIZED LIST , AS I DIDN’T CHECK BEFORE AND I CAME TO MALAYSIA AS THEY SENT ME OFFER LETTER TO JOIN ATTACHMENT IN UKM FOR 3 MONTHS, NOW I WANT TO KNOW THAT WAT SHOULD I DO FOR REGISTRATION IS IT MY RESPONSIBILITY OR UKM OFFICE SHOULD FOLLOW UP WITH MMC AS THEY OFFER ME TO COME AND DO ATTACHMENT….THANKS SIR
doing attachment and enrolling in Master’s is 2 different issue. You don’t need MMC registration and APC for attachment but you need it for Masters. If your degree is not recognised by MMC, you may not be able to do Master’s. MMC may grant exemption if you have more than 5 years experience. Please check with MMC, It is your responsibility and not UKM.
Thanks sir for your reply you gave me hope and im very hopeful now to be accepted by MMC as i mailed them many times but they never reply so i think i should visit malaysia personally again to solve this issue just give me ur opinion and i will try to come to malaysia soon cause this is the only option i have now thanks sir God bless u take care …..
You must also understand that UKM mAsters may not be recognised in your country. It is also not recognised elsewhere.
Foreign doctor,
For MMC registration, is there any Bahasa certificate ?
Is it terribly dangerous if foreign doctor CAN’T speak Bahasa fluently as I was taught that good communication can help doctor to diagnose greatly in most cases ( according to textbook – 70% )
Welcome to Malaysia
Do you have to pay for attachment ? How much ?
What did you do while on attachment ?
Ask the university
Hir sir. Just curious. Wana know how many years a medical student can extend their studies abroad? According to MMA or JPA?
That depends on your university.
Sir currently i’m doing my medical degree in one of the recognized university in indonesia (university of Andalas).I just start my degree in August 2012.. so once i graduate, what should I do sir? please reply..Is that I have to sit for an exam.Is that the exam is going to be same as for those who are from unrecognized overseas medical schools? Tq sir
If it is recognized by MMC than you don’t need to sit for any exams.
tq for the reply sir..
hello sir i am an M.B.B.S doctor from PAKISTAN.I have just completed my 4 yr training for FCPS in gynae and obs.preparing for my part 2 exam in FCPS.My husband planning to move to malaysia for PhD.I also want to get a job in MALAYSIA after passing my FCPS.kindly guide me about it.thanx
your basic degree must be recognised in Malaysia. please check with the MMC website. FCPS is not recognised in Malaysia and thus you will not be recognised as a specialist in Malaysia. You will not get a job in private sector at the moment but you can apply for a job at public hospitals, via the Ministry of Health if your basic degree is recognised here.
Good Day Doctor,
Firstly, Thank you for your time and your effort in writing your blog. It has been extremely helpful and cleared many doubts of mine. Thank you!
However, I hope you can spare some of valuable time and provide me with some advice. The following is my current conditions:-
1) Indonesian Citizen
2) Graduate from King’s College London, recognized in Schedule 2
3) Currently doing housemanship in Singapore, currently on track to become a GP (in 3 years)
4) Currently in a 6 years relationship, have plans to get married to Malaysian Boyfriend.
Upon marrying my boyfriend, I hope to be able to work in Malaysia as a GP. I hope you can guide me through the process in achieving a job in Malaysia.
Also, why is that private hospital, do not hire foreign doctors?
I hope to hear from you soon, Thank you!
Sincerely,
Jayne
it depends on when you are planning to enter Malaysia. Housemanship in Malaysia is a 2 year program. MMC may ask you to complete the remaining postings before giving you full registration.
Sometimes, if you have more than certain number of years of service overseas, they may exempt you.
Private hospitals do not employ MOs in their hospitals except for the emergency department. Thus, it is difficult for them to employ foreigners.
it is very likely that you would not be able to work as a GP upon entering Malaysia. You only chance will be to get a job in government hospital on contract basis. Once you get your PR, then you can become a GP.
Thank you doctor for your swift reply, this is definitely a better response time. 😀 Please keep up your good work!
Hi Doctor,
Sorry to trouble you again, I hope you could spare some valuable time and assist this foreign doctor (Indonesian), who desperately want to continue practicing Medicine and pursue my goal to be a gp, after marrying my Malaysian Bf.
Could you please explain further on your 2nd paragraph? Why do they only hire for emergency department?
‘Private hospitals do not employ MOs in their hospitals except for the emergency department. Thus, it is difficult for them to employ foreigners.’
Based on the above, hypothetically, I have completed my training and am allowed to work in Singapore as a GP, then I got an offer letter from a private hospital in Malaysia to work as a GP, is this a possible path, as I have some connections to get that offer letter.
Thank you for your time.
Confuse and Desperate Dr,
Jayne
As I said, private hospitals do not hire GP. The only medical officers hired by private hospital is to handle the emergency department.
However, GPs can be hired by private chain GP clinics in major towns.
To be able to do this, you must have MMC full registration and usually, you must be a PR.
hello sir , i am sohail , from indian . i have done my MBBS from china , now doing my MD in endocrinology in china . after my PG i would like to work in malaysia . so for this , which exams i should prepare ? . can i give exams , when doing PG ? OR After my PG ?.
Both your undergraduate degree and postgraduate degree is NOT recognized in Malaysia. The chances for you to get a job in Malaysia is very slim as we are producing adequate if not, too many doctors. You can sit for the MQE exams conducted by MMC but no guarantee that you will get a job. You can only apply for public hospitals and it is rather unlikely they will give you a job based on the current situation.
Sir,
My wife has passed MBBS recently from BANGLADESH. I am a master student of University Malaya and need to stay at Malaysia for 3 to 4 years. Please suggest me what can my wife do to get recognized here in Malaysia and continue her career.
Is your wife’s degree recognized in Malaysia? Pls check with MMC
no sir, her medical college is not listed there…now what to do??
you need to sit and pass the MQE exams via MMC. That does not guarantee a housemanship job unless the university where you are doing your masters is willing to give a job after passing the MQE
I assume he is NOT Malaysian as he said ” I am a master student of University Malaya and need to stay at Malaysia for 3 to 4 years. ”
If he is Malaysian why he wants to stay only 3-4 years ?
Because her husband is NOT Malaysian and her medical school is UNrecognised by MMC, she CAN”T do housemanship, practice, and do postgraduate training.
thanks a lot sir…but can you make it bit clear? where from can I get full info about the whole process?? plz sir help me out.
Contact MMC
Sir, I am a MBBS doc from india with 9 years of experience. I have cleared all steps of USMLE (up to step 3). I wonder if I can work as a medical officer in malaysian hospitals based on my USMLE credentials. Please clear my doubt. If yes, how much salary can I expect with or without accommodation? Thanx in advance.
No, you can’t. Why don’t you go to US?
Fed up of applying to every match, sir. Not getting matched. So quit trying. Looking for other opportunities based on usmle credentials like abu dhabi, malaysia, sir. A week back, I received a offer mail from a private malaysian hospital for the medical officer position. I replied with the required details and my CV. But there was no response after that. That is why I asked if I can work as a med officer in malaysia with usmle credentials….
Your basic degree must be recognised. Even then, MMC may not give you registration to work in private hospital.

dr. Pagalavan, I want to ask with the dental students who studies university unrecognized by the Government of Malaysia , what is the procedure to he/she to become dentist at government hospital? (she married with malaysian )
JPA has sent student to the university in 2007 ( but the student change her course with medic) the medical degree from the university already recognized.
hope solution from dr…thanks for you attention.
You can contact The Malaysian Dental Council for further info
I think it is hard for foreigner to work here.isnt it?
Sir , I wanted to ask is it preferable to study medicine in university padjajaran ( unpad ) ?
Padjajaran is OK
unpad recognize in australia ???????
NO
Of course not! No Indonesian (or Msian, for that matter) Med school is recognised in Australia.
Thx u jk … Thx a lot .. then may I noe Australia recognize med skul according to wat basis ? Thx a lot
Australia only recognises their own and NZ medical degrees.
Doctors registered with regulatory bodies in UK/Ireland/USA/Canada/NZ can get advance standing with AMC via the Competent Authority pathway.
Other doctors can sit for the AMC qualifying exams.
You have now the key words, go do your own research.
Australia do not recognise any medical school outside Australia and New Zealand except Monash Malaysia. That does not mean you can get a job in Australia. If you plan to migrate, don’t bother doing medicine.
Thx a lot jk
then what about Wuhan University , facaulty of medicine …. Is this uni good campare to (unpad) indonesia … despite it is nt yet recognise by m’sia government ???
SINGAPORE MEDICAL COUNCIL
LIST OF REGISTRABLE BASIC MEDICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Country: People’s Republic of China
7. School of Medicine , Wuhan University
Master of Medicine, Doctor of Medicine
Why is the recognized title is Master of medicine or doctor of medicine ?
Is master of medicine from china comparable with malaysian master ( of, for example , (internal ) ) medicine ?
Is master of medicine / doctor of medicine from China med school equivalent to MBBS ?
Is it true that in China med school year 1-2 students learn physics, chemistry, biology, thenn from year 3 onwards they will learn medicine ?
Thanks
With so many recognised universities, both locally and overseas (>300 actually), I cannot understand why any one will still want to go to an unrecognised university.
actually i wanted to go to uni padjajaran … bt i discover wuhan university was recognise by singapore medical council n wil be recognise by malaysia medical council … so is tis uni good ???
If you eventually intend to work in Singapore, then by all means go to Wuhan. It is not recognised in Malaysia, and it would be dangerous to assume it will be in future, and go there on that basis.
The main problem with the med schools you mentioned is that they are conducted not in English, and you will eventually work in an English based environment (Spore and Msia). Medicine is a profession where effective and clear communication is vital. There are so many other similar or better med schools in English, why bother with indonesia and China?
Sir, just wanted to find out if there is much difference between doing the manipal full programme at kasturba medical college and twinning with melaka? and with the saturation of doctors now can i still get a houseman place if i do the fully overseas programme. Im a malaysian.
There are a few differences between KMC and MMMC, in various aspects.
1. Curriculum – KMC strictly follows the Indian curriculum which is under regulation of MCI, while MMMC has much been influenced by the Malaysian curriculum. For eg, Clinical rotations in hospital start in the 3rd semester in KMC, along with other second year subjects like patho, pharm, microb, and forensic. And the length of the course is 4.5 years + 1 year of compulsory internship in India.
2. Entrance requirement – KMC is harder to get in than MMMC, at least for Malaysians. When I applied 7 years ago, the minimum entry requirement as stated on the website was 50% for all the subjects, but due to the limited places for foreigners, the requirement was actually much higher than that. My friend who scored 3As in A levels was offered a place in KMC Mangalore, instead of KMC Manipal (which is more highly sought after). So I would assume that you need 4 As to get a seat in KMC Manipal. However, the requirements for NRI are lower, some of them applied with US grade 12 or canadian high school results, and this is clearly reflected by their overall poorer performance in college.
3. Tuition fees – This would be an important factor for consideration as the fees in KMC are much higher than that of MMMC. KMC charges around USD170k this year if I am not mistaken. This is for the 4.5 years course. You get a stipend of Rs15k/month during internship.
4. Faculty – KMC has better faculty I would say. There are quite a number of experienced staff in each department. The problem of lack of teaching staff as faced by some newly established med schools in Malaysia is definitely not seen. Imagine you have 10 units in Medicine department, with at least 4-5 staff in each unit.
These are the important points to be considered when you choose a med school. Another major issue is the recognition of the college. KMC is not recognized in Singapore (it was recognized for only a very short period of time few years back, after which the recognition was withdrawn. The deleted column is still there on SMC website). Recognition in Malaysia should not be a problem as there are quite a number of JPA scholars.
hello doctor,
im dr.anup i did my mbbs from india from a college recognised by mci and now im doing my M.D in anatomy from the same college. my question is whether i shud give any licensing exam to work in malaysia after my
M.D or can i directly apply for a job there.. waiting for your expert advise..
Since your MD is anatomy, you can get a job in private medical schools without a need for MMC registration as you are not dealing with patients. However, if you intend to see patients, you need MMC registration and thus your degree must be recognized by MMC
hello sir,
Thanx for creating such a useful blog.sir,i did my mbbs in annamalai university, chidambaram.i got my degree 1 yr back,as the college is not recognised by malaysian govt, iam planning to do my post graduation in paediatrics,if i cud join a college that is recognised by mmc?cn i work in malaysia aft my graduation or stil do i need to undergo any exams?then sir i got an offer for doing dip.in diabetology in mmc recg college,in india,hw far it is worth doin wen my mbbs is nt recog?plz help me,is thr any othr options u wud like to suggest as none of my fly members r doctors.if nthg works iam planning to settle in india itself as my dad is an indian.kindly give me ur opinion.thank u.
None of these diploma or postgraduate degrees are recognized in Malaysia. Thus what matters is your undergraduate degree
thanx for the reply sir,my only option is to sit for the exam conducted here, how if iam doin non-clinical degrees?
you can get a lecture post in universities in Malaysia but cannot practise clinical medicine
Dear Dr Pagalavan,
I had completed my MOE Matriculation with CGPA of 3.91,MUET upper band 3 and my SPM result was 4A+,2A,3A- ( A for biology, A- for chemistry and physics ). Do you think it is possible for me to get the local government university ? Besides the local university, do you recommend AIMST University to do my MBBS ?
Hope to hear from you soon. Thank You
If I am not mistaken, you need CGPA of atleast 4.0 for public university but you can try. AIMST is OK
even to enter Universiti Malaysia Sabah and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak need CGPA of 4.0 is it dr ? I put UMS the first choice and UNIMAS the second choice during my application.
They would like to have all their students with 4.0, and there are indeed, thousands of matrik students with 4.0. However, they also like to have people choose them as 1st preference, instead of being placed 4th or 5th, and only considering UNIMAS or UMS when they failed to get into the usual top 3. So people with sub 4.0 putting them first will have a chance. There are some sub-4.0 students there, as well as lateral transfers (ie from other faculties, after the 1st year, joining 1st year medicine again). They also do consider other talents, eg sports, music etc.
Tq jk.
Can I know what is AVICENNA directory (http://avicenna.ku.dk/database/medicine). If AIMST University choose me and I had completed my MBBS there, later can I further my studies to Master in any medical university locally or abroad ?
AIMST is NOT recognised elsewhere and thus you will not be able to work anywhere else unless you sit and pass each country’s entrance exam with no guarantee of a job.
Avicenna directory just tells you that such a medical school exist in such a country. That’s about it. It DOES NOT give you any form of recognition. Medical schools use this as their marketing tool to attract students.
The Avicenna directory is the new WHO directory. WHO handed over responsibility for maintenance of its medical school directory in 2007 to the University of Copenhagen. Thus, whenever people say WHO directory, you should refer to the Avicenna directory. The last time WHO released its own list was in 2000.
Like Dr P said, if your medical school is listed there, it just means that it exists in that country. Medical schools have to apply to be listed – there are only 14 Malaysian medical schools listed there because the others have not bothered to apply for registration (probably too busy trying to attract students and $$$) or are not yet eligible (need to be accredited by MMC).
The only implication is that when you apply to sit for foreign exams (e.g. USMLE, AMC, PLAB), they may require that your medical school be listed in the directory.
I’m studying in new york, doing my MD there..but I think that university do not recognize by malaysia government, and I went to new york by myself,I mean I didnt went thru any agent,I just apply by myself and went there myself,.so what should I do now?
Which university/medical school is that, exactly?
If it is not recognised (newer medical schools might not be) then stay and complete your postgrad in the US before thinking about coming home. For your own sake, if you want to succeed in the US (or any other English-speaking country), I hope your spoken English is better than your written.
if it is not recognised then you need to sit for MQE exams if you do come back. If not, you can continue in US.
I passed the entrance exam of Uni Gadjah Mada, Indonesia for sept intake 2013. It is dentistry programme. So what is your opinion about this? Do you think I can have a job in malaysia after graduated? Should i grab the chance to study there or just pursue in engineering at local university. Hope for your reply. Thanks
No one can tell you what to do or predict the future for you. Read what people have written, balance out the risks & benefits of either career and make your own choice. Lots of people here can tell you what they would do, but everyone’s circumstances are different.
do what you are interested and not whether there will be job in the future. nothing is guaranteed in the future.
Doctor, what’s your opinion abt dentistry in Uni Gadjah Mada, and MSIA local private uni dentistry (AIMST/PIDC/MANIPAL)?
I really can;t make up my mind…
Thanks doc! pending ur reply!
I passed for UGM dentistry too! =)
I also have the same prob with u…
I am not sure to stay at local (like maybe go for AIMST, PIDC, those local private uni or wait for UPU results) or go for UGM.
As what the information i get: DENTISTRY IN UGM will be conducted in bahasa indo while the books will be in english.
And still~ i was worried abt the course fees which was fluctuating…
UGM is ok as I know.
USU is not. True story.
Anyhow, please contact those who studies there currently, by all means, find a way to get their contact.
hello sir, i m Dr S.K.K.Rao completed my medical education from Ukraine Chernivtsi,,from Bukovinian state medical University.
I am an Indian and cleared my Medical council of India exam, doing internship.
next year i want to work as a Doctor in Malaysia. What should i have to do?
Your basic degree is likely not recognized in Malaysia. Thus, you can’t work in Malaysia
hello doctor, i just got offer to further my studies in medicine with USM-KLE. Do you think that I have the advantage to get a job as a doctor at the future? such as more practical in the india..
As long as it is a local public university, should not be a problem
Hello Doctor,
I am Dr. Reezwan from Bangladesh. I have completed my MBBS from here and I am currently doing my training in Internal Medicine. I wish to settle in Malaysia and practise Medicine there. Can you please help me figure out which would be the most convenient pathway to achieve this. Thank you very much.
Firstly, your basic degree must be recognised by Malaysian Medical Council. If not, you can’t practise in malaysia.
Secondly, internal medicine training from Bangladesh is not recognised in Malaysia.
Thirdly, malaysia is now having surplus of doctors and thus, they have stopped recruiting foreign doctors. However, some of the university hospitals do take foreign service medical officers.
Thank you very much.
Do you think it is easier to get a teaching job in Malaysia? Like lecturer in Medicine etc? Are there any Clinical Courses in Malaysia that if I enroll in would improve my chances of getting a job there? Thanks
The same rule applies unless for preclinical teaching
Sir, I am a medical graduate from a reputed medical college recognized by WHO and Bangladeshi medical and dental counsel. Can I get a job in malaysia?
WHO and Bangladeshi council recognition does not mean anything. IS your degree recognised by malaysian Medical Council? Even if it is recognised, you are unlikely to get a job in Malaysia. You may try the university hospitals.
I am final year master student in general surgery UKM. I am from Pakistan and my MBBS degree is not recognized by MMC. shall I have to give MD or MQE test?? where should I get the course contents
Please read the latest guidelines here
Hello..
Im a medical student currwntly in um…basically final exam in um for fifth year..comprises of 4 components..part a for continuous assessments, part b for theory part, c for osce and d for 2 short cases and 1 long case..one must pass all the components in order to graduate..1 fail means u fail all the components
Hi Edan,
I would be writing my MQE this year at UM starting April 2014, I was told I would be among other UM students who did not make it the last time, I was wondering if you could guide me a bit about the procedure and tell me more about your experience in the wards when on rounds.
Your help would be much appreciated.
Helloo edan , hv u done ur MQE ?
I m planning to sit for MQE n badly need of ur guidance ?????
dear dr,
i have full registration with mmc . but no apc. i am in uk now. can i do private practice or work in malaysia.
Are you a Malaysian?
If you are, you still need to do your compulsory service in the government sector for at least 2 years unless you have worked overseas for more than 10 years.
If you are not Malaysian, then you are unlikely to get a job in Malaysia
Hello Sir
I am a medical graduate from India but UK resident.Iam working as a health care assistant in a GP setting from 7 years, i would like to move to malayasia , Can you tell me what are the chances for me to persue medicine in Malayasia for me and what will be the rquirements.
Thanks
Knd regards
The chances are almost NIL. Since you are a foreigner, you will not be able to get MMC registration or any job.
Dear Doctor;
I have been going through all your posts for this past two days and find at least you are doing all of us a huge favor by explaining about the Malaysian qualifying exams and also about being a doctor in Malaysia,
Sir i need to ask your opinion in this matter. Mr. A have a brother who have completed his undergraduate at “C Medical College and Research, at Chennai” on the year 2011. However when he came back to Malaysia and went to KKM at Precinct 3 to apply for a job he was told his university his not recognized in Malaysia. However his friends who did their dental in the same university was given job in Malaysia.
Then Mr.A’s brother was summoned by MMC and KKM to a hall in Putrajaya on 2012 and was given briefing that they can now sit in other private university. But after the initial talk there was no other advances or even notification from KKM not MMC.
So when A’s brother went to these few private universities, he was told to pay a sum equivalent for 6 months course which is a lot to sit for the exam. But he did not take their offer instead went to a public university and was given the 6 months program and medical qualifying examination. He just did his exam this year 2013 and was notified that he has failed.
But Mr. A brother insist something is very wrong and he should have passed the exam.
What can Mr.A’s brother do now, since money and age is taking his youth age now? Everything looks very bias..
Please advise. Tq
The only way is to sit and pass the MQE exams. Not other way.
Hi, Deva I would like to talk to you about MQE, help is much appreciated!!
hello doctor, i have passed MBBS from Dhaka University from Bangladesh. now i am doing my post graduation on Anesthesiology under BSMMU in Bangladesh. i want to do job in Malaysia after completion my post graduation, can u give me some advice about this plz
Unlikely you will get a job in Malaysia unless you are married to a Malaysian? Your post graduate degree is NOT recognised in Malaysia.
Hello Dr Pagalawan,
My 19 year old son (who is Malaysian and Chinese) is currently studying medicine at Queen Mary, University of London. He hopes to go back to Malaysia when he gets his MBBS.
Having brought up in London and educated at a top UK grammar school he speaks fluid English. The only problem his knowledge of spoken and written Bahasa and Chinese is virtually nil. Would that be a problem for him working in Malaysia ?
Yes, definitely!!
Firstly, why do you want to come back. By the time he graduates, there will be surplus of doctors in Malaysia and you will not even be considered for a job in civil service as you do not have a credit in BM in SPM. Secondly, without knowing bahasa and Chinese , it will be almost impossible to communicate with patients in Malaysia.
Thanks for the info.
hey every one please let me MMC exam format ,, as the exam is basic or clinical I m graduated for unrecognized university
There is NO such thing as MMC exam format. The exam is the same exam as what the final year students of the allocated universities sit. It involves both clinical and theory.
please tell me final year subjects
dear sir I m pakistani did my MBBS from china , sir my wife is Malaysian , sir as there any path for me to get job in Malaysia after passing MMCexam or not and please let me MMC requirements and exam pattern , exam is clinical alone or with basic
thank you sir
Since you are married to a Malaysian, you are eligible to get a job in Malaysia if you pass the MMC exams. However, it is not guaranteed.
ok sir thank you so much , but sir please will u guide for exam pattern and subjects ,,,, as the exam will on clinical format
The format depends on the university that you are allocated.
Does it mean the proposed MQE will apply to all overseas graduates, even those from recognised medical schools like Imperial College, Kings and UCL etc.
Hello
I am pakistani currently studying MBBS final year in Beijing China.I want to know how many steps gonna be there for MMC exam and how is the exam pattern?plz reply
Unless you are married to a Malaysian, you will not get an internship post in Malaysia
Hello Sir,
My name is Dr.Teena, specialized in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Presently working as Assistance Professor in SSMC, Tumkur -India.
1. I have completed my Master degree at VIMS, Bellary,India, affiliated to Rajiv Ghandi university of Health Sciences, Bangalore and Recognised by Medical Council of India.
2. My Basic Degree – MBBS at JJMMC Davanagere, affiliated to Rajiv Ghandi university of Health Sciences, Bangalore and Recognized by Medical Council of India.
Which is also recognized by Malaysia Medical council.
3. Completed MRCOG Part-1 in September 2013.
My husband (Indian Citizen) got an opportunity to move to KL,Malaysia from his organization permanently.
Hence would like to request to please assist me to start my career in KL as a Doctor.
What are the criteria to fulfil or procedure to work in private hospitals in KL, Malaysia.
Request your support and guidance in this regard.
Private hospitals do not employ foreigners in Malaysia. Your only option is to apply for a job in public sector/university hospitals. However, your master’s degree will not be recognised here. Thus you will only get a medical officer post, if your basic degree is recognised.
sir i have completed B.U.M.S. in India M.U.H.S. University can I Eligible for Practice in Malaysia if yes than how can get license
please guide me
what is BUMS and MUHS?
Sir can i ask u something regarding what is the protocol and guidlines in malaysia to qualify for masters program in pre clinical area such as anatomy, physiology, biochem. For example which master program like MD In antomy or Master in Medical Anatomy suitable to become a lecturer in meds school..if i want to do the program in oversea, is there any chance i can practice in malaysia as master holder? Is there any exam that i should take after finishing the program in order to practice in malaysia sir?please guide me sir…tq in advance sir 🙂
If you do basic science postgraduate, you don’t need license to practise as you will not be practising medicine anyway! You can teach but can’t practise clinical medicine. The application to Master’s is the same criteria.
tq very much sir…..
Hello doctor, i just finished my Premed in aucms and i got 3.94 for cgpa. Then i really wanted to pursue my study in Taylor’s University for mbbs program. Can i know your opinion for this university? Does my premed is qualified to use it to continue my study here(Taylor)?
You need to ask Taylor’s. Taylor’s is new and have not produced any graduates
Hello Sir,
i am from Pakistan ,my basic degree M.B.B.S recognized by MMC.i am graduate of 2004.i have 7 years clinical experience in different Region ,Pakistan,Saudi Arabia, now i am currently working in Maldives as Medical Officer. i want to do job in Malaysia, sir please guide me how to register in MMC? Thank you,
You need to get an employment first before being able to be registered with MMC. However, the only option for job is in the government sector. Private sectors do not employ foreigners.
Thank You ..Sir
Hello Dr Pagalavan..
Would you be able to guide me here.. Which are the university hospitals in Malaysia(examples).. I am married to a malaysian and I also have a child who is born in Malaysia.. At the moment, we are all in overseas and I am working as a MO since 3 years + I did 2 years’ internship.. I graduated from a non recognized medical university.. How to get myself registered with MMC? What are the steps to follow? My emphasis would be to pursue a master’s programme rather than to work in Malaysia at the moment.. If I also get the chance to work in Malaysia, it’s something for me to consider.. Are there any seats ‘reserved’ or ‘given preferentially’ to foreigners who are married to Malaysians? (P.s I’m a non-muslim if it matters). Or is it possible for me to start looking for a job first and thereby looking for a post-grad seat? How would it be done best?
Thank you in advance.
Since your basic degree is NOT recognised by MMC, you need to sit and pass the MMC exams in order to be able to even consider employment in Malaysia. Master’s in medicine is a part time studying and full time working. Thus, you must be able to work and be registered in Malaysia if you want to do the local Master’s program. So, you won’t be able to do postgrad if you can’t be registered.
Thank you very much Dr Pagalavan.. Do malaysian universities or MMC have any kind of ‘syllabus’ or ‘guides’ for these exams? How do I go for these exams? And how do I look for the institution who can provide me employment and/or Master’s programme? Would you be able to guide me regarding some first steps if possible? Thank you again..
No syllabus. You sit the final year exam of the university that has been allocated for you.
Hi, Doctor. Thank you for all your informative articles. I want to ask that is the statement “An University is recognized by MMC but its name is not on the MMC website(SECOND SCHEDULE) because there is no graduated doctor’s from it yet.” —–Yup, I’m asking about PERDANA because this is what their staff told me. But what about UCSI? Its name is in the list and it also hasn’t had its first batch of graduated doctors. I feel confused. Secondly, if a local medicine program is not recognized by MMC, the degree holders will also need to sit for MQE to be registered as qualified doctors right?
MMC will only accredit the university when their first batch is in final year. Of course there is a risk that it will NOT be recognised. IF that happens, you need to sit for the MQE exams.
UCSI has already produced their first batch in 2011.
hi doctor, can i ask u something, which is the best university to sit for mqe? AIMST or USM ( i meant the passing rate) which one will you suggest me to sit?
thank you doctor for you explaination.. so in this case i better go to usm rite?
safer
hi doctor. Comparing Russian State Medical University with University of Sumatera Utara, which one better and which university will you recommend?
None of it actually but if you have no choice, I would prefer USU.
how about kursk medical university?
worst than the first 2 you mentioned
The level of local houseman in this Malaysian educational system is so bad that i think the exams should be set out for every graduate no matter local or foreign and the ones who pass the exams should be given a job, I had batchmates who could basically kill patients and had zero knowledge and yet they made it.
The bias for public universities taking ppl of certain race into public university medical programs and private colleges taking any tom dick and harry with bad marks and making them doctors has led to such a bad state of affairs, with houseman who are really bad.
Hello Dr Pagalavan, I have done my graduation from CSMU, ukraine. I finished in 2009 and i am currently living in New Zealand. there were many Malaysian friends of mine who did graduation from there and they straight away started practicing.I want to practice medicine in Malaysia but I do not have much experience. What are my options and how does the system work to be able to work there?
Kind regards
I presume your CSMU degree was the last batch that was still recognised by MMC. You need to apply to MMC first for housemanship
thanks for that Dr Pagalavan.. However, I missed to mention that I am not a Malaysian resident. In that case, what will I need to do as the first thing? Is there an exam conducted by MMC to be able to do housemanship? Or I can do it straightaway?
Then I am sorry. Unless you are married to a Malaysian, Malaysia do not provide housemanship to foreigners.
Sir, I’ve read through your comments and I wonder why did you not recommend russia as a place to study medicine? I wish to study there especially in KSMU.
I am a Malaysian.Just finished my foundation in local uni.Waiting for my final examination result and the expected cgpa is 3.85. I’ve planned to go to KSMU through MGM enterprise. How about JPA scholarship? Am i qualified enough to apply for it? I mean after I got an offer letter for KSMU?
I think I had written enough about Russian universities. generally, most of their products do not have enough knowledge and skills and ranked the lowest among all the housemen. Very few stand out
Oh. What should I do now? How about UMS sir? Is it good? Any suggestion on where should I apply to? Private uni or any local uni?
I would always prefer local public university and good private local university. never fall for the agents.
First of all i would lyk to say thank u sir for guiding us for our bright career..

As far as I know, most entrance exams are tough.
Hey,
This is a quite informative blog. You have answered almost every query posted here. I hope you could answer mine as well.
1. Are foreigners with no relations to any Malaysian citizen qualified to take MQE?
I don’t know where you get the energy and patience to answer all these question but thank you and god bless you.
Sitting for MQE and getting a job is 2 different issue. Malaysia do not provide housemanship to foreigners.
Read around and got the answer. The exam is only open to Malaysian, Malaysian PR, and anyone related to Malaysians by either blood or marriage. Plus their degree is under the non-recognized degrees listed on MMC website.
Do correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks.
YES
Actually I’m asking on behalf of my wife. She’s done with her MBBS and housemanship. She’s doing her MD in Pathology at the same college which is under the non-recognized institution as listed on MMC site. She’ll be done around mod next year. So she’s looking around for any options overseas. She’s currently in India. Can you shed some light?
Since her degrees are not recognised in Malaysia, she will not get any employment or registration in Malaysia
That’s too bad but at least its cleared up. Thanks and goodnight.
Hi Doctor !
I m a STPM leaver with PGNK 3.92. I wish to pursue Medicine not for sake of glamour and money. I love biological sciences and passionate on it.
Currently, I’m waiting UPU result to be announced. I was only shortlisted for UKM interview for medicine course.
At the same time, i ve ald get offered by UGM (Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia). Somehow, UGM requires me to respond my decision before UPU’s result been announcing.
Do u recommend me to go for UGM or wait for UPU results?
Does responding mean need to pay anything? Gajahmada is a good university but given a chance, I would prefer HUKM.
Yaya.. I need to pay around RM 46K..
Thanks doctor !
Hi Doc,
I am malaysian. Currently, I am a 4th year medical student in Cuba. As far as I concern, non of the Cuba medical school is listed in 2nd schedule and unrecognized schedule. My question is, am I eligible to sit for the MQE? 2nd question, how can I prepare or apply for it? (Because I couldn’t find information about the details for MQE from those 16 listed universities via their official.) Deeply hope that you can solve my problem. I deeply appreciate your contribution to this discipline.
Since you are not even listed in the “unrecognised schedule”, it will be on case by case basis. You need to apply for MQE directly to MMC and not the respective universities. MMC will then allocate the university.
Thank you for the reply. Doc., one more question. I checked the MMC site regarding the MQE application. In the application form, there is a space to fill in the institution which the applicant wish to take the MQE. So, I can make my choice there? Or the decision is in the hand of MMC?
Yes, you can give your choice but it is up to them to decide
Thank you very much sir. Have you come across any Cuban doctors? Normally, which country hire them? I picked up this country because the tuition fee is totally free
I have not come across any!
Alright! Thanks for your aid!
Sorry to bother you again doc.. I have a next question..Let’s say I passed USMLE (all 3 steps) or PLAB…Can I work in Malaysia without going through MQE?
Nope , unless you complete your postgraduate degree over there
Okay, understood. Thank you very much doc.
Hi, i did not understand this post. So, if a malaysian doctor’s basic medical degree is not recognised with the MMC, but his post graduate medical degree from america or the uk and is recognised in the NSR, one can come back to practice in malaysia?
Yes, generally
Hello sir,
I am an MBBS doctor from India and my undergrad college is not in the unrecognised list. As per the MMC website I have to provide certain details about my college in order for it to be enlisted in the unrecognised list before I sit for the MQE. Could you please tell me whether on providing these details it is actually possible to go through with this process and also how much time it would take for this. The mmc website details are not very informative and hence would like your inputs
Thanks
Regards
Dr Ankita
Hello sir just wanted to add some details..I am an indian and on a dependant pass with my husband who is here with a three year employment pass. will I be even considered for registration in that case.
Thanks
If your degree is unrecognised it is almost impossible for you to get a job here. Even if you pass your MQE, with the current overload of doctors in our system, unlikely you will be given a job. However, you can still try if you want. What I know is that the MOH has stopped hiring foreign doctors
Hello doctor…i am very confused as i cant get any guidance from anywhere.
I am from pakistan and have recently done my mbbs and want to apply for housemanship in malaysia.list of recogonised institutes is not updated on mmc because the university mentioned no longer exists in pakistan.i have informed them through mail now lets see….anyways my degree is unrecogonised.so is there any chance i can apply for housemanship or not?
Malaysia do not provide housemanship for foreigners, unless you are married to a Malaysian.
Pls sir
I need your help
what help?
Hello doctors i have done my MBBS from Pakistan can i sit in MCI exam?
Are you talking about MCI India or Malaysia?
Please reply
Dear sir,
Hi,First of all I wanted to thank for all your useful info about medical studies. Actually Im one of a student going through an agency to rsmu russia. It is recognised by malaysia but lots of people telling that russian degree not going to worth and it is very hard to get internship in malaysia. So better we go not recognized universities such as Davao in philipines and do internship in different country right ? Or which one is better ? Thank you for the concern and your help is appreciated.
Firstly, you must fulfil the minimum entry requirement to medicine, set by MMC.
Any job depends on supply and demand. No job is guaranteed whether in Malaysia or elsewhere.
PLEASE do not waste your money doing medicine in unrecognised university. Where are you intending to work ? in philipines?. What makes you think the said degree is recognised in other countries?
hi
im a Malaysian, just graduated from china, now planing to sit for mqe in aimst april2015. i came across your website when i search for syllabus to prepare for my mqe examination. from your post above, do you mean even i pass mqe i will not necessary get a job? do you have any book to recommend for that exam like for usmle we have kaplan and first aid.
thank
Nothing is guaranteed. No standard syllabus as you are basically sitting for the final year exam of the university. So you need to ask the university.
Dear sir,
Hi, thank you for all the useful information above. Im a malaysian and my wife who is an indonesian currently graduated as a doktor from a uni recognised by the MMC. Can you give me an insight or any guideline how my wife is to apply for housemanship in Malaysia. thanks sir.
Firstly, you need to be officially married. Then you need to apply for a job in MOH. Unfortunately, with the current limited post, I heard even PRs are being rejected. But you can still try under spouse program. Usually, they will give you a job on contract basis.
I AM A STUDENT WHO JUST FINISHED MY OLEVEVL EXAMS. I WANT TO BECOME A PEDIATRICIAN. IN MALDIVES WE GET NEARLY 6 MONTHS FREE AFTER OLEVEL EXAMS. SO I WANT TO APPLY FOR A COURSE. BUT I HAVE NOT FOUND ANY COURSE GOOD FOR MY CAREER.PLEASE HELP ME. I STAY IN MAL’E THE CAPITAL CITY OF MALDIVES.
I can’t decide for you
Which university in China mate? I just sat and passed my mqe in OCT..
hello doctor. im nydia from malaysia and im going to pursue my degree in medicine. any smart advices for me???…ppl have discouraged me saying that medicine is tough and etc…. any words on that??/
Read this blog!! Especially everything under ‘ for future doctors’ page.
Dear sir,
Currently its stated that MMC has recognized two medical universities in China. The condition is to take half more year to practice in China(which is not stated in the second schedule) , I would like to ask if I could come back and take MQE instead of staying there half more year. How long is the duration to take a course before I can take the MQE?
Thanks a lot.
also about 6-12 months
Good morning Doctor.
I am 18 and waiting for my SPM results. It will be out on 3rd March 2015. I am interested in pursuing my studies in medicine. Then, I would like to specialize in Ophthalmology. I just want to know whether MBBS or MD is better for me after doing foundation in science? I am not clear about that because some people are saying that both of them are same. but some of them are saying that MD is better for someone who want to do specialist. can you help me on that Doctor?
Both are the same!
Dr.Pagalavan, I’m Nachimani, was a PhD student at University of Nottingham UK, Malaysia campus (UNMC). I was cheated by the UNMC in my PhD exam as they select wrong examiners twice and wasted 2 years and 9 months….pls share in your blog this info http://www.graduatesunion.info or http://www.malaysiakini.com/letters/280014
Doctor, i would like to knw where can i work after doing my MRCP in Malaysia? Which countries are they recognised? My first degree is from Russia. Thanks!
Singapore
Doc, wish to seek your advise as I planned to go for medical studies but not too sure of which would be a wiser choice MAHSA or Russia-Volgograd.
I will generally stay away from Russia
hi doc i am planning to continue medicine..I would like to know if any universities in Philippines is recognized in malaysia…Thank U
NOne
Hello Sir,
I am currently doing my foundation in science. Then I plan to go to Bangladesh(Mymensingh Medical College) next year for my MBBS.Is degree from Bangladesh recognise by MMC?
Yes, please check the MMC website
hi sir ,
I going to graduate in Malaysia unrecognized medical faculty, i would like to ask PLAB (UK), AMC (Australia) , USMLE(US) which one are recognized by Malaysia Medical Council ?
Firstly I don’t understand what you are trying to ask. As far as I know , I do not know which university in Malaysia you are talking about. All are recognised except those which are yet to produce graduates.
If you plan to work in Malaysia, only MMC MQE exams matter. None of the above matters.
My daughter qualified with a diploma in radiography from MAHSA Malaysia. Her attempts to find a job in Singapore have not been successful as they do not recognise MAHSA. What can she do in Singapore in order to get the right qualifications acceptable in Singapore?
Sorry, I never knew diploma need recognition! I think if you have some amount of work experience in Malaysia, it may give you a better opportunity.
Hictor. I’m a Malaysian.finished my Stpm. SadlyI got c+ in my bio both in spm and Stpm.but I really want to do medicine. Now that I got a place called southwestern university of phillipines. And Yes It’s under second schedule or should I say not recognised. But the fees are cheaper. My question is if I can’t get noc , am I eligible to sit for Mar exam and do my internship here??? Please leave a reply.
None of the universities in Philippines are recognised in Malaysia. Based on the latest MMC guideline in 2013, if you do not have the minimum requirement(aka no NOC) and from an unrecognised university, you WILL NOT BE ABLE to sit for the MQE exams. Everything will go to waste. The best option is to resit STPM BIO or SPM Bio
hello doc, im first year medical student in Rcmp. is it worth it for me to start back to year 1 just because I want to pursue my study in India? under ms ramaiah college and that college has been approved by mmc. thanks 🙂
It depends. Definitely, Ramaiah college will have better training facilities and academics. However, language may be a problem if you can’t speak Tamil.
Hello sir!
i want to ask about MQE malaysia, i am non-malaysian graduated from china, planning to take a master course in malaysia, i have been told that i have to take MQE, do i have to take training before even i appear for MQE ?
Malaysia do not have a standard MQE exams like PLAB, USMLE etc. You need to apply to MMC and you will be given the university where you will be sitting for the exam. The exam is the same as the final year undergraduate exam of that university. Nowadays, MMC need you to undergo atleast 6 months training in that university to familiarise with the system.
You do not need any training in order to appear for MQE but you do need a lot of money. Considering u have to undergo 6 months of internship, if I compare final year internship of Malaysia to dat of US it seems more of an 6months observership.
So that was my question actually, why i have to take internship, i have 3 years plus experience post internship, still i cant take MQE directly ?
You can ask MMC for exemption. Personally, since it is not a standardised exam like other countries, you need to know the exam format and how things are done here. So, the attachment training may be useful
Hi,
Any one who has a Medical degree along with minimum one year of experience can apply to sit for MQE, previously the MMC and KKM allowed the applicants to sit directly for the exam but 9 out of 10 would fail and the one who passed also was borderline and after that they don’t know how things are done in the malaysian hospitals how should u act and behave culture difference. They charged five to ten thousand ringgit for that exam but now the clinical training has been made compulsory by the mmc and kkm considering it a prerequisite for appearing for the MQE. So in case you pass according to mmc and kkm which is not a big deal your behavior and attitude must be very professional so u are under observation in the university. if your university’s name is not in the Malaysia’s second schedule of recognized universities you would be asked to sit for Medical qualifying examination hence forth MQE to become eligible for a license as according to MMC MQE is just an equivalence exam of your clinical knowledge according to that of malaysian doctors they want to see you if you are a functional doctor hence they ask you to sit for examination with Malaysian final year students so they can compare your knowledge with them and you are also observed for your behavior and attitude . If the applicants university from which he has graduated is not recognized by FAIMER he would not be allowed to sit for MQE. So if you are a foreigner and you want to work in Malaysia you must have Masters degree from a recognized institution to be eligible to work and that too you must be very good at what u do as Malaysian government is not hiring MO’s and getting registered as a specialist is very difficult. If one is a spouse of a Malaysian, they can apply for internship but they too cant work as MO in government have to find private job after internship. If you are a malaysian with 2 to 3 years of working experience and want to get into Malaysian system its easier all u have to do is register for MQE pass it and apply for an MO post but you must wait atleast a year after clearing your MQE.
I hope it answers your question.
Yes you answer it completely, but it is unbelievable to know that you have to take training to even sit for MQE, i mean even worlds top important exams like USMLE, plab, and AMC, no need for any training you can directly sit for exam after verification of your documents but strange to know that in case of MMC its not like that.
Because the exam is not a standard exam like the ones you mentioned.
I agree with u completely to add furthermore those exams are not as expensive as MQE plus it is not recognized anywhere in the world unlike the exams u mentioned.
But every country has its own set of rules and if one wants to live in that country I guess one has to abide by it. You have to be in the system to change the system.
Datuk Hisham, Datuk Subra, Datin Adeeba dean of UM are very active in improving Malaysia’s healthcare and encouraging local grads to specialize and improve.
There is one thing i forgot to mention earlier it is that Kkm and Mmc do not compare MQE with USMLE, PLAB and etc because these exams are considered as competitive examinations but MQE is considered as equivalence exam as I mentioned earlier.
As Our great Dr. Pagalavan has mentioned that Malaysia might introduce MMLE which might work as USMLE and other examinations u mentioned. But according to my knowledge that bill has been cancelled and a new bill has been passed that if a foreigner wants to work in malaysia they must have SPM bahasa malaysia examination cleared without credit. Which will eventually become with credit if the influx of foreigners don’t stop. But if u having masters degree and have three or 4 years of working experience then u do not need BM and can be offered MO post in government. Coz u can only be registered as specialist in malaysia if your university is recognized and that to u cannot start as a specialist u would be under observation but if u are lucky anything is possible.
MMLE was rejected by Cabinet in 2012. However, MMC seem to be still pursuing this as their MMLE committee is still active. There is no such thing as new bill has been passed to make BM compulsory. To join civil service, a credit in BM is compulsory. However, doctors were given exemption since 2005 as they wanted more doctors then. Now, with the current overflow, the exemption is removed.I don’t think MOH will recruit anymore foreigners as MO. Specialist may still be recruited depending on which field is needed.
Thank a lot for useful information, since you have taken the exam recently Kluver, may i ask you about exam format ?
Hi,
As Dr Pagalavan has stated in his earlier post’s that there is no standarized syllabus for this exam it varies according to the univerity you go to. The good bit is that the MMC gives you the freedom of choosing the university of your liking and then u can apply there. I went to University Malaya the country’s best university and got grinded to the max I never got to struggle this much in my own medical school compared to what i went through in these 6 months the system is completely different. I can asure you it was very very hard but now if i have to look at it every bit of it was worth it. I earned lot of respect of my prof’s, For me the whole concept of Malaysian Doctors changed . If you want to know the details of the exam to the bones then i guess we can meet up if u r in selangor but if u r in other state then for UM exam it has 5 parts if you fail any component you fail the whole exam.
1. Long case
2.short case
3.OSCE
4.CPC
5.problem solving
Above three are clinical componenets and bottom two are theory parts. Within all these components is another world it seems like u need to know infinite knowledge to pass these componenets but later i found out work smart not hard as the UM students would do.
Let me know how else i can help you?
If I am not mistaken, MMC was planning to change the “freedom of choosing own university” method again. I wanted to go back to the old system where they will decide the university. I am not sure whether it has been implemented.
I am not sure according to my knowledge u can choose but if u choose it does not matter the university is gona accept you it also depends on your credentials if you fail an exam it also looks bad at the university resume that they were not able to train u so no point MMC choosing as the matter is between u and the university and Mmc already have there accredited university so for them it should be all same. But government universities are tough n better.
My son got offers from Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia and IMU local for MBBS. Which one is better in terms of facilites and which one you will prefer?
TQVM
Both are OK but NuMed has a better campus.
Hi doctor my girlfriend who is from india is currently doing her 3th year in karazin kharkhiv urkraine which is not recognized by the mmc. What is the best suggestion that u can give for her.. and what are possibilities for her to get internship post here
Malaysia has stopped providing internship to even spouses of Malaysian citizens. Even PRs are not given a job anymore. They have started enforcing the need for BM credit at SPM level as a requirement to enter civil service. You can read some of the issues HERE.
So, her chances of getting an internship job here even after passing MQE is almost NIL. Her choice is to do internship in India.
Hi, good day.
Thanks for the information given above. It was useful. I have a question. Is it advisable to study medicine in Andalas University, Indonesia. Since I passed my entrance exam, I have to accept the offer letter in one month time. Is it advisable to study medicine there ? Is it recogised?
Andalas is recognised in Malaysia. Also make sure you have the minimum requirement to do medicine based on MMC criteria. Indonesian universities have variable outcome in quality.
Hi,I was wondering whether University Gadjah Mada is a good place to do medicine? Is it okay? and in comparison with AIMST which would you recommend me? and is NuMed recognized by the MMC?
Gadjah Mada is OK. NUmed is recognised by MMC , they produced their first batch last year
How are you Dr.Paga?
Does it mean that I have to sit for the exam if i am graduating from a university in UK? How long does it take and how much will it incur? btw im from malaysia.
Thanks for you time!
No, as long as your UK degree is recognised in Malaysia, you can apply for a job in Malaysia. However, anything can happen in the future
Hi, I am working as a software engineer in Malaysia. Currently, I am on Work Visa provided by my company. My wife has completed MS Orthopedics in India from Osmania University. Now, She wants to work in Malaysia. Will Malaysian policies agree to work or is there any exam needs to qualify to work. Kindly let me know. Thanks
Firstly, your basic degree must be recognised by Malaysian Medical Council. No Master program from India is recognised here. However, with the current situation in Malaysia, Ministry of Health has stopped providing jobs for foreigners. Private sector are not allowed to employ foreigners either unless they have exhausted all other option of getting a local.
Hi doctor,I am from Bangladesh. I have completed mbbs from university recognized by MMC.now I want to get post graduation degree from Malaysia.is there any exam to get GP resistration for clinical practice?would u plz give me some suggestion.
Malaysia do not provide employment for foreigners. However, if you intend to do postgraduate Master’s program , you need to apply directly to the respective universities.
Hi
I’m a foreign doctor married to a Malaysian woman. I am a graduate of University approved by MMC . I have a experience of over 10 years as GP overseas. What’s your advice on Registration with MMC. Thanks
Hi , I’m a foreign Doctor married to a Malaysian lady & intend to settle in Malaysia. I graduated from a University recognized by MMC. I have a GP experience of 10 years from overseas . Kindly advise how do I proceed for Registration with MMC.
You need to contact MMC but you need to get an employment first. If not, there is no reason for MMC to give registration. However, as far as I know, MInistry of Health has stopped providing jobs to foreigners, even to spouses. Private sector also do not employ foreigners generally.
Doctor , is RSMU, russia unibersity will be still recognise by six years times upon graduating. my daughter completed her diploma in medical lab technology. she cant decide what course to choose for her degree. she doesnt like biomedical science. which course/work is in demand now for her to choose.
No one will know for sure. What I know is that if it is recognised at the time of entry, you will be recognised. Why bother sending to russia anyway? There are enough medical schools in the country.
Hello Hi ,
I have graduated from unrecognized university and I’m a malaysia permanent resident , I just want to know if I will be eligible to start my houseman job if I passed my MQE or not , I heard that KKM wont allow you to do your houseman job if you are not the warganegara . I have been living in Malaysia for my whole life and currently I have no other nationality. Should i take the MQE or it will be a waste?.Any suggestion or advice anyone?
Regards
As far as i know, KKM has stopped providing housemanship post for foreigners, including PRs. Definitely you have a passport that belong to your country. Unless you are an illegal immigrant!
sir im final year student from pakistan….. may i appear india FOR MRCP ?/\
of course
Hi Doctor, my friend is a Pakistani national. She wants to study medicine at Monash Malaysia. Can she apply to do housemanship here in Malaysia? Or is there a way she can obtain PR status here in Malaysia? Are there chances for her to get housemanship in Australia?
Thank you.
Malaysia do not provide horsemanship for foreigners. You can forget about getting PR in Malaysia. It take years, almost 10 years to get it. As for Australia, the chances are slim.
Hi sir.i am mbbs doctor from india with malaysian citizenship…my university is recognised.but my college is not recognised…i want to practice in nalaysia…how to proceed??
Please contact MMC
Hello sir. I hv currently done wif my foundation in science in Manipal Medical College at Melaka. Can i proceed my further studies at Indonesia with this foundation cert?
Hi sir. I hv currently done with my foundation in Manipal Medical College at Melaka. Can i proceed my further studies in Indonesia with this foundation cert ?
that depends on the university you are applying to!
Thank You sir.
Hello sir.. I want to pursue my studies in medicine.. But currently i don’t have NOC due to my add maths results in spm… Is there any other alternative way to work in malaysia without NOC??? Or should I repeat my SPM paper??? Thank you sir
No NOC means No job in Malaysia as you need to fulfill the minimum criteria to get a job civil service
hi Dr Pag, thank you so much for your time. i am a malaysian who went through 6 years of medical school when the local PRCs only took 5 years because we are foreigners in China we need to study 1 more year. I graduated from Jinan University with a Bachelor of Medicine which is listed under the <Unscheduled Universities and Colleges Eligible to sit for The Medical Qualifying Examination under Section 12(1)(aa) of the Medical Act, 1971. I am glad that my University is still on the list, when i saw an article on university removed from the list. I also managed to find a list provisional doctor that has passed the MQE to be on the list of registered doctor that have graduated from my University. For those who intend to go for the MQE you can try searching if you have any senior who have become full registered doctor on this website, at least you have senior who made it in malaysia. (http://mmc.gov.my/v1/searchmmc/main_search.php)
iam from india.graduated MBBS and MD from wuhan university china .do i need a medical exam to work malaysia?
Malaysia do not provide housemanship to foreigners.
sir i need to work in malaysia .so what are the proceedures.any medical exams
You won’t get a job! What’s the point of sitting for exams?
Hi sir, I am a Malaysian studying MBBS in an unrecognized university in China. I am wondering if I continue master’s program in a recognized university, would i still have to sit for MQE? Is there any benefit at all in having a master’s from a recognized university while having a MBBS from an unrecognized university? Thanks in advance.
What Master’s are you talking about? Your Master’s must be recognised in Malaysia. It does not matter which university . If your Master’s is not recognised here, then it falls back to your undergraduate degree.
So the master’s program may not be recognized even though the university is recognized? How do i check whether the master’s program is recognized in Malaysia?
YES! Check the NSR website
Good evening, Doctor.
I am currently in my final year of medicine in Zhejiang University School of Medicine. Strangely, my MBBS program was listed as 5.5 years, this year being the last (God willing, I’ll be graduating next year if all is well), and after hearing about the MQE, I got worried; my university is not on the list of the Second Schedule (http://www.mma.org.my/images/pdfs/Link-InfoForDoctors/Jadual-Kedua-11-12-09.pdf) or the Unscheduled List (http://www.mma.org.my/images/pdfs/Link-InfoForDoctors/UNSCHEDULED-UNIVERSITIES1.pdf). From the list of comments, it seems that I am not alone in this predicament. I tried emailing both the MMC and the MMA, and their answers always lead to the same one: look at the list of unrecognised universities, if it’s not there, then one is not eligible to sit for the MQE. As a medical doctor, any advice on how to proceed? Any slivers of answers is better than nothing from where I’m standing 🙂
legally if your university is not listed in Unscheduled list, you are not allowed to sit for MQE. However, you can appeal to MMC.
Hi Dr. Pagalavan, I am medical graduate from the non-recognized medical school.
From what I understand from the MMC website the MQE exam has been replaced by the new exam called ‘Exam for Provisional Registration’ EPR exam.
Do you know anyone who has taken the exam? Will it be more difficult than the previous MQE exam? For the clinical exam part, it stated that it contains 16 stations, does it mean 16 stations of short cases? I am so confused with this.
Hi sir,
I have done my MBBS in Guangxi Medical University, China, which is not in the list of Second Schedule. As usual, I have to sit for MQE before apply for doing housemanship in Malaysia, but it seems like there is a change starting from this year. I got this information from the Provisional Registration Unit of MMC: There is no more MQE courses conducted by universities. This is because MQE already centralize as Examination For Provisional Examination (EPR). By the way, I didn’t notice any news or black and white stating about the replacing of MQE with EPR. There is no training programme for EPR and per candidate will be allowed to try for 4 attempts in Theory & Clinical part. For more information, the registration fee is RM1000 (which is 5 times higher than the MQE registration fee), RM3000 for Theory and another RM3000 for Clinical part. If you fail the exam, you have to register again and also, pay for another RM7000 for your next attempt (which is why MMC loves to fail you). I am so confused whether what to do right now. Any ideas helping me with it?
Hi,
May I know are you preparing and going to sit for the coming EPR exam?
Lets help each other, I heard the next epr is happening in March next year. where do you live?
I know that it is in March, the MMC is not answering, lets help each other. Where do you live?
Hi ict,
I just got the news that the theory exam is confirmed on 30th March. If you want you can leave your contact method so that we can discuss about the exam preparation? Thanks

Hello Dr. MRCOG is an open examination right? and if im not mistaken, it can be taken if you already have a medical degree(MBBS), is it? Im still waiting for my SPA interview for my housemanship training. Can i take it or shud i wait until i finished my housemanship first? Or Can i do it while doing my housemanship?
Are all the examinations done in malaysia? I googled and found that part 1 exams in september 2017, Malaysia is not listed as examination centre. Correct me if misunderstood. Thank you Dr.
You need to be in service in order to sit for any membership exams. If I am not mistaken, you must be working for atleast 1 year before being eligible to sit for Part 1.
Hello Doc,
I’m a Canadian who have completed his High school and Bsc(chemistry) in Canada but then went to offshore medical school(Caribbean) for my MD. I have completed my USMLE step 1 and 2 and the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Exam(MCCEE). To match into residency(Postgraduate) training in Canada or US is very difficult because my degree is considered as a Foreign degree since the issuing school is not in the US or Canada. I want to go to Malaysia for housemanship then come back to Canada where i will be able to practice as a GP. My wife is a Malaysian and lives with me in Canada. what are procedures one must follow to secure a Malaysian housemanship post? do you think I will be exempted from the Malaysian Qualifying exam since I have completed those Qualifying exams? btw, i know that my school is not on the MMC list of recognized schools.
Thanks
Omar

Malaysia do not provide housemanhsip for foreigners, even if you are married to a Malaysian. This is despite sitting and passing qualification exams.
Thanks doc. But few hours ago, I checked the MMC site and they said non citizen married to a malaysian can do housemanship. Is this an old policy or what? Also on your April 27, 2011 at 10:19 AM post you said the following:
Housemanship in Malaysia is only for citizens and foriegners who are married to Malaysian. This is because you need to join the civil service in order to do housemanship
Can you elaborate?
Thanks
Since October 2014, even if you are married to a Malaysian, you will not get internship post in Malaysia as even malaysians do not have enough post. In 2016, ministry of health already issued a circular on this and I had posted it in my blog
Ok that is clear now. However, if I get the Malaysian PR, would i still be considered a foreigner?
Thanks
Yes, at the moment
I heard tad qualified doctors, physicians and surgeons in malaysia are actually not as much as we thought. Just the housemen r overflow, dunno whether it’s true…
Any advice? Dr?
It is more complex than you think. Yes we are short of specialist but the issue is Maldistribution and training post.
Can i have the list of hospitals which r allowed to undergo subspecialty training?
Please read my books. It is as simple as that
Good day. I’m a medical graduate from unrecognized college frm phils. I am planning to sit for Examination for Provisional Registration (EPR) which was known as MQE before. As I was used to type of questions back at my college. I am feeling kinda nervous about the exam. As it was told to me, the EPR exam will be quite similar to local msia’s final year professional exam. Can i know the type of questions that will be asked? Is it case based? Is there any available exam banks that i can practice? Any sources? It wil b a great favour for me. Thank u so much.

Frankly, I got no idea how the exams are conducted. You need to ask MMC on the format.
Ok doctor. Thank you. Have a nice day

Hello doc,
I’m malaysian & plan to take MBBS at kursk state medical university. After i graduate, will i be accepted to do housemanship in malaysia? And do i need to sit for the exam MQE?

If it is recognised by MMC than no need but rules can change anytime
Thanks doc. May i ask for yr opinion on ksmu? Will you recommend it or better private uni in malaysia?
I will not recommend any Russian university
Thanks doc. Then do you have any recommendation on private university in malaysia ?
Any established university will do
Hi,
I am from Iran and working here in Malaysia for 6 years. Recently I got married and my wife is medical specialist in internal medicine graduated from a university in Iran which is not recognized by MMC. She has got 1 year experience as GP and 1.5 year as specialist. Could anyone guide me can get work permit and job for her as a specialist in Malaysia? what can we do? Thanks.

Unfortunately, she can’t. Firstly her degree is not recognised by MMC. Secondly the government has stopped giving contract jobs to foreigners.
Hello sir. Can you explain me. Is it not possible now to apply and pass examination for preliminary registration in MMC for foreign doctors and why if so? Where can I get tutorials , list of questions and answers to theory and practical parts of exams?
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
There is no point as you will not get a job. The government has stopped providing jobs to foreigners since 2014.
The point is because I have an employer who will hire me after that.
Housemanship in Malaysia cannot be done in private sector! It can only be done in a government hospital by Ministry of Health. I am not sure what employer you are talking about?
So you mean if private clinic wish hire me as doctor that impossible?
Not if you have not done housemanship. I have never heard of private clinic hiring foreigners to work with them. MMC will not give registration. Are you working currently after graduation?
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
Thank you for answers. To get housemanship means registration in NSR as specialist, right?
No, for basic registration.
I got it. I am working as specialist more 5 years after graduation .
That means you will need both MMC and NSR registration which you will unlikely to get, as both your undergraduate and postgraduate degree is not recognised in Malaysia.

hello doc..anyone here pass the EPR?
where can i get format for epr and do some exercise for sitting epr? Help please
https://polldaddy.com/js/rating/rating.js
EPR was just introduced in 2016 and conducted by established public universities in collaboration with MMC. I don’t think there are any books so far. You can contact MMC and find out. The exam will be similar to some of the public university final year exams.
Sir, I am a Malaysian and will be graduating from my mbbs soon. It is recognised by MMC. Would it be wise to think of pursuing my pg in India?
PG from India is not recognised in Malaysia
Sir , I am an Indian national doing my MBBS in China. If I successfully clear my EPR , will I be eligible for a MMC provisional licence and be allowed to do my housemanship in Malaysia?
Nope, Malaysia do not provide housemanship to foreigners anymore since 2016
Dear Dr Letchumanan, I am a Malaysian medical student studying in Australia. I am about to finish my degree, and my university is recognised by the MMC. If I were to complete 2 years of internship/housemanship training here, would I qualify for any form of registration should I return back to Malaysia? Or would I have to sit for the exams for provisional registration still?
I think a more relevant question would be whether you will get a job!. Internship in Australia is generally recognised in Malaysia except the fact that you will need to do the Obstetric component in Malaysia before you are eligible for full registration. No exams needed. Of course all this is assuming you get a job in KKM as you still need to complete your compulsory service of 2 years. Based on a circular from MMC in 2017 which I had posted in my blog then, if you do not get a job in KKM after working for more than 2 years overseas, you can be exempted from compulsory service. BUT remember, without KKM job, you will not be able to do any form of specialisation.
I am not sure whether you are aware of the situation back home. Please read some of my latest blog post!
Dear sir, thanks for replying! I’ve just read your post regarding the new circular. So assuming that I don’t get a job from Kkm for 6 months after completing my internship training in Australia, I will automatically be able to get my full registration? Meaning I’d be able to work as a medical officer in private hospitals or practise as a GP?
Yes, it may sound strange but that is what the circular seem to indicate. However, you must have worked overseas for more than 2 years, which I am not sure whether it is 2 years post internship or including internship. I suggest you contact MMC to clarify this matter as rules keep changing in Malaysia. Private hospitals usually only takes medical officer for their emergency department and they need atleast 5 years experience.
Ah I see. Thanks for the information, am very grateful for your help. 👍🏼
Hello Sir..
I have come across your blog while searching for information concerning Radiology specialisation in Malaysia.
I have undergone my Undergraduate studies in an unrecognised institution..Housemanship done for two years..and already working in Government hospital for almost 10 years..
I am already aware that i need to take part in the EPR, MedEx and REE and Interview.
But i dnt know if there are any past papers for these exams..which i can check and practise before going for these exams..
Any info from your side would be of immense help.
Thank you
Yes. EPR is pretty easy.
Hello Sir..
Thank you for you advise..
Do you think there is any question bank or any book i can practise for the EPR 1 exam..
Thank you..
I didn’t use any question banks to prepare for it but some people have tried PLAB questions and they claim it helped them to pass the EPR. So I guess you can try that too . Good luck!
Are you a Malaysian citizen?
Hello Sir..
No..I am not Malaysian..
I am preparing for the exams by reading books subjectwise…but this is proving very time consuming, especially when working at the same time..
That is why i am searching for any study material (MCQs) or any other format that can help me study faster..
Thank you..
if you are not a Malaysian, I think you need to first know that Malaysia do not provide jobs to foreigners. However, you can try direct pathway for local Master’s program that are offered to foreigners, but you need to leave the country once you complete the training. I would suggest you talk to public universities offering Master’s program in radiology.
