Since I got my Blu-ray player in Feb 2010, I have been doing some research. The first “so-called” blu-ray disc that I bought was a pirated one from the “pirates” in KIP mart Tampoi. It was “Independence Day“, which caused me RM10. At first I saw it being clearer than the normal DVD but not exactly that much of a difference from an original DVD, on second thought.
So I decided to buy an original Blu-ray to test the real difference. I logged on to amazon.com and decided to buy “Transformers 2” bluray disc. As I have written before, you can get blu-ray disc at a cheaper price directly from US via amazon.com. I must say that the pictures were extremely clear and worth every cent watching it in blu-ray. Subsequently I bought “Lord of the Rings trilogy” in blu-ray, released on 6/04/2010, reached my house in 10 days. I must say the sceneries in these movies were SUPERB in high-definition……………. you must watch it in HD!
After watching all this original blu-ray disc, I decided to do some research on the pirated ones. I realised that the “so-called” blu-ray disc are not actually bluray disc. They were recorded from an original blu-ray onto a normal DVD!!!. If you don’t believe me, try playing it on a normal DVD player, it can be played where as an original blu-ray cannot be played in normal DVD player.
Furthermore, when you play the pirated blu-ray on a blu-ray player, it will appear as DVD-ROM and not BD-ROM as for original blu-ray. So don’t waste your money buying pirated “so-called” blu-ray discs………..
I totally agree with Dr Pagalavan, i’ve seen many DVD mongers started switching over to Blu-ray piracy. Amcorp Mall , Pudu Plaza are the spots to get them.
I wonder the authority is looking at this issues.
Anyway, recommending you some titles, if you are interested, check my blog @
http://skywirebluray.blogspot.com
Thanks
Hi Dr. Pagalavan, if you buy from amazon.com, you will have to bear the courier cost on top of the already expensive blu ray discs ya? How much does it work out to per single blu ray title? Thanks
You can see my post on “where to buy cheaper blue ray”. Even after adding the courier fee, the price is still cheaper than buying over here. Total cost is usually around RM60-95 per disc. In fact some of it comes with 2 disc, blu ray + normal DVD. Compared to RM120-150 over here, it is definitely cheaper.
Furthermore, now the US currency is low.
Hi Pagalavan,
Is there any compatibility issue between our local BD player (region A) with those BD bought from amazon which I suppose is of other Region than A?
Hi,
There is NO compatibility issue as all amazon blu-rays are Region A and if I am not mistaken all Malaysian blu-ray players are region A compatible.
Greetings Pagalavan,
I agree that after one has gone blu-ray it is hard to go back to watching standard DVDs 🙂
By the way what are the shipping charges for Amazon.com? Which type of shipping do you take?
Thank you
Regards,
Adrian de Souza
You can just take normal shipping which will cost around USD4-6. It should reach your house in 10 days or less.
Hi,
I can sorted some pirated blu-ray disc in Wangsa Maju area with RM35 per movie with limited titles only.
It is real BD Disc and not DVD Disc!
Unfortunately, the pirated BD only available in single layer of 25GB which only can captured Dolby True HD but not DTS Master Audio. Anyway, the picture quality still in 1080p!
So far I have searching around Sungai Wang, Low Yat, all of them selling only single layer BD and limited titles only. Some titiles need to order and wait for 3 days.
I think it is better to buy downloaded MKV or TS file in HDD that can display Full HD 1080p vision (It consume 30GB to 40GB per movie!). It cost only RM12 per movie. Just bring your HDD and they will copy to u. Sometimes buy 20 and free 10. Worth than buying BD Disc.
Thanks for the info but I am in JB. Can’t find anything like that. Any info?
They are selling pirated Blurays for RM25 at Perling Mall (right infront of Giant). I did not buy it, but according to the guy, it’s burnt onto a single layer 25GB. And he promised me it’s on 1080p. I don’t know much about these sort of thing, so I didn’t buy it. But if you give it a go, let me know how it is.
U can visit the website http://www.hdghost.com. More than 1000 titles to choose.
Add the relevant movies to the cart and they will call u.
1 movie is RM12 (regardless of size of movies), so choose the big GB of movies is worth, such as 30GB to 40GB, u may get Dolby True HD or DTS Master Audio.
If u choose the movie less than 10GB, u only can get DTS-ES or Dolby Digital EX only.
Now got promotion, buy 20 movies free 10 movies, so…..
1 movie only RM8.00 with 1080p Full HD quality! For sure the quality is superb as compare with the normal DVD Movie of 4.5GB (a.ka. DVD-5) or dual layer 9GB (a.k.a DVD-9)
Hi Dr. Pagalavan,
I am thinking to buy and ship a blu-ray player and some blu-rays from the US to my dad in Malaysia. I am wondering if you had to pay taxes when you bought blu-rays from Amazon.com. Did you have to pick up the parcel at the custom office?
Thanks,
Lee
I am not sure about blu ray player but the blu ray disc has no tax and it reaches my house directly.
Can this downloaded files can be played directly via usb at led tv?
These are Bluray CDs, not dowloaded files
You can get Bluray movie in single layer disc for RM30 in JB. can bargain if buy in bulky.
For me I will go for the original.
Why, cause its quality save, long lasting, best sound, true color display. and while purchasing, you don’t need to worry that if the Blu Ray disc will went wrong once you played at home.
Original = Guarantee, Insurance & Quality. SAFE
Buy Original, Support Original.
Yes, buy iroginal from Amazon.com. So much cheaper then original bluray in Malaysia. I just bought Salt extended cut bluray for just RM93 including postage. Here it is sold at RM 149.99!
yes I agreed.. I was collecting a lot of pirated bluray and spent thousands at the end the disc all koyak.. jilaka.. now slowly collecting original disc..
Is the copy still considered legal in Malaysia to buy direct from amazon for films? Don’t they need the certificate from Malaysian Censorship Board “Penapis Filem Negara.”
Yes, it is legal as long as you do not buy films that has been banned in Malaysia. DVDs and Blurays cannot be censored/edited.
Now 25 gb discs are as cheap as RM 16 each
I have purchased from Amazon.com before, service is good but there are still some compatibility issues.
For example my original Close encounters of the 3rd kind does not load probably and it does not have any chinese subtitles.
you may need to upgrade your firmware at the local service centre; usually free when under guarantee but RM 50 when guarantee has expired.
And I do not see much difference in Video or audio quality between 25gig disc or the original 50 gig
anyway informed sources told me that 50 gig discs will be available very soon for RM 40 each
I am am avid documentary/concert discs collector and amazon sells mostly discs made for the american market
return is a major hassle for those stuck with machines with earlier firmware
Well, I got no problem with movie bluray disc.
hi kenl8888…where can i buy those 25gb? which part in kl?
Hi Dr. Pagalavan,
I have bought from Amazon.com before. And I totally agreed with you that its far cheaper than in Malaysia.
BUT 1 experience had me reconsidered buying again from Amazon. Its not the amazon store thats causing me the problem but some ‘panjang tangan’ postal staffs in KLIA. I ordered Transformers Blu Ray 3 disc combo last year but it was ‘lost’ in transit. Again, I ordered 3 books from Amazon.com and when the parcel arrived, there was a note attached to it saying that they found my parcel had already been opened. Looks like now they are targeting Amazon parcels that is sent without tracking number. I talked to one of Pos Malaysia staffs in my area, and he agreed that parcels with no tracking no. are highly susceptible to being stolen and advised my to use tracking the next time I ordered things from oversea.
So far, I have not had any of such problems over the last 1 year!
I saw a shop selling pirated Blu ray disc at RM 10. I just wanna ask if it could play on normal dvd player . And if it does, can I watch it in full hd plus good sound quality? ( Have a HD TV )
The last time I tried, it could be played in normal DVD player. Any pirated DVD, the quality of picture and sound can never match the original but relatively OK.
The last time I tried, it could be played in normal DVD player. Any pirated DVD, the quality of picture and sound can never match the original but relatively OK.
So is it full hd? Any improvements?
Yes but not as good as original
Can u send me the details on how u get the br dvd’s from amazon???
how do u get tracking number? Ive bought a br player doc ! Now I wanna get a br from amazon. Ok, Im buying a br disc at 24 dollars. After that will there be any surcharge? If I wanna expedited shipping, any charges? Now Im afraid of the parcel getting stuck in customs as what digital896 said. Who to trust now?
So far I got no problem. Not necessary to take faster postage as even normal standard mail will only take about 10 days. Don’t waste money on expedited shipping. The customs got no problem as long as it is not a banned movie in Malaysia
How much is the surcharge?
No surcharge. Only the blu ray price and the standard shipping charge which is usually about US6-8.
Cool, will pre order Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows 3 DIsc Combo Blu ray……thkz for the tips…..
Hey DLee
The website hdghost seems to be dead. R they still working? And which part of wangsa maju is it that they sell pirated BD Movies in Single Disc? Need help coz u cant afford for an original BR Disc all the time….
I got no idea but most of so called pirated blurays in JB are not recorded in bluray disc!
Btw doctor, what was ur latest shipment from Amazon?
Social network!
Guys…please anyone can tell me on where or how to get fake bluray discs. Not RM 10-15 ones but RM 50 ones with full HD. Pls tell la….
you can buy it at SS2, PJ just beside ‘Kee Tuck Sit Restoran’, or a few too around SS2.
Doc, can I get R Rated films from amazon/only for christian viewers product like THE PASSION OF CHRIST to Malaysia?
The passion of christ is not banned in Malaysia, so should not be a problem.
I’m from Singapore and I buy bd from amazon regularly.. It’s cheap but each bd has a shipping cost of about 8us.. It’s cheaper then prices in Singapore but now Singapore movie shops has offer of like $60 for two bd.. The best thing about buying from amazon is u get the original stuff which is unadulterated and not censored.. For a movie buff like me, originality is Important.. Anyway today I bought two bd from johor(pandan city) at 25 ringgit each and I have to admit it’s crystal clear just like the original bd.. These disc are 25gb ones.. Just buy to try and I’m impressed.. I’m using a Sony home theatre system and it sounds perfect..! I will still buy original bd online and maybe buy from johor for fun.. Any questions feel free to ask..
Yaseem,
Do the original BD discs come with 50GB?
The pirated ones come with 25GB only.
Just want to find out what actual is the difference bet orig and pirated apart from the price.
So far all that I see are 25gb ones.. Yet to see a 50gb disc.. Once u go blu, u won’t go back : )
Yaseen,
What type of TV do you have? Sony too? LCD, LED?
Indeed, once you have experienced blu, nothing can beat it already.
You’ll see the original ones that come with 50GB. So not sure what do these additional 25GB contain of.
I’m using blu ray since April 2008 with optoma hd65. Been using ori all this time. But recently, managed to get fake 25GB and 50GB BDs to try.
the quality of both are 98% like bluray, only that 25GB will not include special features and only have one audio track (the best). 50GB include all like ori BD.
But because they are copied version, sometimes you can see distortion during the movie. If you are a collector, go for ori BD.
Nira,
Prob is I can’t find any pirated BD with 50GB .. so still have not experience for myself the difference between the 50 and 25Gb ones. Where have you bought the 50Gb ones?
I have watched the 25Gb ones and I could choose difference types of audio effect …. is that the same what you are referring to on the audio track?
I bought BD50 1080p RM40 per piece at Amcorp Mall Petaling jaya. Can get discount if buy more. They come in with steel box, complete with sleeve cover.
Yup, some BD25 have multiple audio tracks/effects, but some don’t. It depends on the movie size i guess.
The BD25 I have bought so far cost me RM25 and can get discount if buy more.
Thanks, will check out the shop in Amcorp Mall then.
When you said “special features”, what are these additional features that we can enjoy?
Hi chow I’m using panasonic full
Hd plasma.. Plasma as I game
So better graphic rendition.. Special future in ori disc includes bd live where u can download extra content into your blu ray player via Internet provides your player has bd live written on it..
Those blu-ray discs that I have been buying are action-packed movies.
What are some of the latest good action packed movies that I should get as add-on to my collection?
tears of the sun,stealth,basic,
Ten commandments, underworld and avatar.. Myself I like zombies movies
I like hardcore xxx gay porn, I will order from Amazon now
Found a shop in Seapark PJ selling 50Gb one at RM40.
Just wondering does the picture is really sharper than the 25Gb one.
Doc,
May I know everytime when u buy from amazon.com, u buy few movies title or 1 movie at a time.
As my understanding for football jersey is the total amount not exceed RM500 then they will direct release the parcel, else there is 25%+10% tax. So does this apply on blu-ray disc?
No. You can buy one or even more. No tax involved, only delivery charges.
Hi
I was wondering about bd prices in Malaysia as I am about to go on holiday there in August. I am not too surprised at the original prices as DVDs has always been pricier than in the UK, even when the xchange rates were favourable (to the UK). If you are paying rm25 for a a pirated dvd, then its not much more expensive than a real one here … well, its about 60% cheaper than the real thing, but if I was to pay for pirated stuff, I expect it to be 90% cheaper!
As for BD50, I dont think its economical to produce as pirate discs as the blanks cost almost as much as a retail disc.
Lastly, I was wondering if you guys in Malaysia have heard of cdwow.com. They do free delivery worldwide and are quite cheap. They ship to the UK from the far east, so I am sure they will ship free to Malaysia too.
Hi Hazza,
A real BD here will cost between RM100-150, depending on the movies.
The RM25 is for a pirated BD, not DVD. It is for a 25Gb pirated BD.
So far only found one shop pirated 50Gb BD and it is selling at RM40. My question is – what is the difference between BD 25 & 50? Is it just the sound clarify? Does BD50 comes with even clearer picture too?
Never heard of cdwow.com before.
Jeremy, you there? Managed to find a Blu Ray disc already?
The 25 GB n 50 GB were being sold at wangsa maju (under lrt station) at RM25 n RM50 respectively……
hi jeremy..r they still selling those bd at wangsa maju? can u name the shop?
Ya, the shop is still there. It is a chinese area. It opens from morning to late nite. I’ll get the shop’s name when I go there again nxt time!!!
Hi chow.. 25gb has one bar code at e back of disc and 50gb has 2 bar codes.. Basically 50gb has more special features.. In terms of picture clarity, both 25 and 50 looks same to me.. It’s all up to manufacturer on how they want their discs to be like.. Went pandan city yest and the blu ray there is much better and has trilogies that looks like ori.. Myself, I would still buy original..
Hi Yaseen,
For BD Live, what actually can you download to your BD player?
Hi chow, u can
Download extra content like wallpaper and trailers and all
Ok … but I will need an internet connection connected ya. 🙂
Saw any good movies lately that are recommended for my BD collection?
Get pirates trilogy and Quentin Tarantino collections…
I watched Pirates for the first 2 then somehow lost the interest :-p.
I am thinking of getting the collections for LOTR, Transformers, Iron Man and Bourne Series.
Anyone here into downloading movies from the Net and then playing them using a media player?
Am considering buying a media player soon – so wanna ask for recommendation. Better with internal disk and/or external one? What are the other factors for consideration before purchase.
Thanks!!
Beware of the Pirated Blu Ray because the developer now have some protection on their Blu Ray known as Cinavia. You still can watch the movie but the audio has been muted with the message code 3. If you have a Blu Ray player that can play such as “The Smurf” do not update your player firmware to the latest one. More info can be obtain from http://www.cinavia.com/
anyone know are there any shop near sungai wang or lowyat plaza selling BD50 about RM40 or cheaper? or maybe even BD25 selling around RM20?
thanks!
Wee,
I am not from that area.
I usually buy mine from Taman Tun or PJ areas.
Guys, lately been watching those movies downloaded online, come in a few Gb to 10Gb and they are pretty clear. How different can they be from Blu Ray?
If they are the same, then the question is – how to justify buying anymore BD when clear HD movies can be downloaded from the Net.
Can anyone share sites to download HD Movies?
I can get a 25GB now as cheap as RM15 each. Some titles are 50GB at RM30 each. Some titles are 3D but has option to play 2D edition but some 3D titles required only 3D player. Pirated BD is no guarantee perfect as the original one. In my experience, 3 out of 10 BDI have purchased either has distortion or totally cannot play however it can be replaced. Not nice movie also can change. Some shop does offer Take fist pay later facilities. U can ask for a free DVD movies for your loves one if you buy 10 BD.
where exactly hansonmmm?
I have found some cheaper BD too (less than RM20) but the shopkeeper told me it is of lesser quality than those of RM23-25 ones.
So far those I have bought (25Gb ones) are pretty good qualities. But wondering if the orig ones would be even clearer.
Guys, any of you do download movies from the Net? Any difference to BD?
I bought BD from the same guy for over 1 year. When I first started purchase it was selling for RM30 each and slowly drop the price. Now a days BD selling like a pisang goreng.
I have had few FullHD MKV files. It’s hard to differentiate the quality. Those are identical to my eye. I am not the visual engineer after all.
To me, the sound quality perhaps is the different. Picture quality wise is about the same to the naked eyes.
How big is those MKV files you have .. 10Gb .. or close to 30-40Gb?
Since they are about the same, would you still buy BD or just download from the Net?
It’s around 10Gb only. some are in 1020×720 resolution. Yes if i am not mistaken it’s only has 2.1 channel. Full surround sound may not fit into 10GB file.
I have not watched a 40Gb mkv movie files yet. Perhaps those will be able to give better sound quality.
How do you play your downloaded movies? Do you connect your media player to your home theater system using a HDMI cable?
As far as I know, the pirated 25gb and 50gb Blu-ray discs which sell for RM20 to RM40, are exact copies of the originals. While they are considerably cheaper than the original Blu-rays found at video retail shops such as Speedy, there appears to be no diminution to the sound or picture quality when compared side by side with the originals. Having said that, please do not buy pirated goods in whatever shape or form.
Many now don’t even buy those pirated Blu-Ray or DVD-9 as movies in HD are easily available on the Net nowadays. Some friends have passed to me what they have downloaded and man, they are very clear, can’t really tell the difference by our naked eyes. Some of the movies are up to 40Gb size.
That’s why I think it is a catch-22 situation in promoting broadband penetration in our country. To be honest, why people need such high speed connection if it is not for downloading such movies. One doesn’t really need such high speed if it is just for emails, skype, VoIP calls, YouTube. So if the Govt ban or remove access to those sites where people can go and download these movies, then I think it will affect the take up rate of broadband in our country.
What do you all think?
bro, can share your downloaded movies?
Any latest update on prices of BD 25GB/50 GB?
Not True i live in México And they sell pirated blu- Ray And Its The exact same copy as The original And They are bluray disc
lol, the pirate must be noob, they probably thought dual layer dvd are blu-ray, I can do the pirate stuff with the real blu-ray and have the same viewing quality as original. but since it’s illegal so I won’t.
why I can do better? because I have knowledge in this field.
hye maybe its too late to reply but let me second ye thoughts..yesterday i was in JB after ten years not entering there..was super psyc anyways bought a pirated blu ray off ksl like rm10 and tried on my bd player…acts like those of original ones..loading pop up menu even the interface stated BD Disc playing..tried on my panasonic..on my lg and my ps3 fat..slim and even the super slim gen..all works the same with BD Disc written on screen..this is my first pirated blu ray and i must say the quality are similar with my original collections..all 486 of them..think of that im quite dissapointed with em’..spent like almost three sg dollars on my collection..and ye could get like 4 sg dollars for a pirated which almost the same qualities as the authentic ones..
The above post is outdated. Now, you can get good pirated blu-rays in JB. The price has also come to down.
Can ps3 original (not hacked) play pirates bluray disc?
Sven, only RM10? Here in KL there are 2 types, one costing RM25 and the other RM18. If it is 50Gb, then it will RM40 plus.
Really no different, not even the sound quality?
Any shop at Penang sell pirate bd movies?
any shop at Ipoh sell pirate BD movies ?
Technically speaking all these Pirated blu-ray discs, won’t last long (cheap coating), prone to scratch (non-anti scratch gloss type – cheap plastics in laymans term), plus temperature co-efficients are quite low, it means to Malaysian climate if you preserve them in shelves for more than 3 months they have the tendency to have fungus due to dampness – sorry but you can’t clean them off, well what does that all mean – blowing up your blu-ray player like the one’s you saw in Star Wars, DS-1 Orbital Battle Station ya go ahead.
Wow… nearly 4 years this article still living..
The reason I stop buying pirate BD because the Original BD from Amazon is a lot cheaper. Bought Band of brother pirate 6 disc x RM25 each = RM150.
Amazon sell after conversion + shipping RM120… fortunately one of the pirate disc spoiled and the shop have no more copy to exchange, I return back all and buy the ori BD from Amazon.
Another Example Ironman 3D
Original RM85 from Amazon – the package include 3D BD + 2D BD + DVD + Digital copy
Pirate 3D BD 50GB RM40 + 2D BD 50GB RM40 + DVD RM8
Yes, I have been buying from Amazon since 2010
Movies via net. 20 – 40 Gb per movies. Qualities is 100 % as original BD. I know a lot of thing about BD (too much). The movies downloaded has DTS HD and TrueHD. Don’t blame people that downloaded it. It’s IDK who’s fault for Malaysia developing too f***** slow, I searched for blu-ray on the store in Perlis, there’s no f****** blu-ray store in Perlis. The only thing there is is DVD (LQ). The only movies I ever bought was TLOTR EE’s costing RM400+ @ Penang. Ripped it and store it in my 4 TB HDD.
19nick99,
Can you share website to download blu ray movies?
i jus purchased spiderman trilogy blu ray from amazon and when ot arrived in Malaysia its held at the customs! The DHL called me and said i needed to appply FINAS letter in order to have customs clearance! anyone else had this experience before?
Never had this problem. I have been buying since 2010. Last was last month. Is it something new?
My blu ray finnaly arrived after applying FINAS letter whichh cost me rm6 for each film. After that i purchased another 2 blu ray movies and guess what this time no need FINAS letter for customs clearance the package arrived at my house 5 days after purchasing. How strange..
weird! i never had such problem. Probably mine usually come through JB customs!
i live in Penang, maybe that’s the problem
However I did notice that since August last year, if you buy via standard mail, it takes one to one and a half month to reach. It use to be 14-20 days only.
Hi Pagalavan,
May i ask how much does the shipping cost from amazon , and do you have to pay for tax for the imegration department.
Standard mail is about 6-8US dollars but takes about 2-3 weeks to arrive. Express mail is about 10-12 U.S. Dollars and takes about 10 days.
By the way, have you tried the dvd from amazon, you might think the quality is not as good as blu ray disc but truth to be told our country’s decoding for dvd is quite poor, compared to other countries. I even bought a dvd from pasar malam and is way way better than the original one.
Hi there, as Im aware blu ray discs from Amazon.com is playable on our BD players, BUT can DVD’s from Amazon playable in our BD player since its Region 1 encoded? Thanks.
Nowadays all bluray players can play all regions DVD. I had no issues
Hi guys, just want to clarify any difference between 25g and 50g bd? Where to get pirate 50g in jb?
Greetings All,
Just some info.
Agreed with Brother Pagalavan as blu-ray being converted into normal DVD.
Please find as per below :
50GB – BluRay compressed and converted in to DVD9 ( Size – 8.7GB )
Sold with exact blu ray covers , looks like blu ray disc as well.
The real catch is , there are difference between normal DVD9 & Blu Ray 25GB.
Normal DVD9 behind it looks in gold color whereby , 25GB blu ray behind disk looks pure black or black + gold mixture colour.
The difference is :
DVD9 BLU RAY VERSION – MYR10
25GB BLU RAY VERSION – MYR12-MYR15
50GB BLU RAY VERSION – MYR30
The DVD vendors , buy the material from China which they compress 50GB movie into 25GB.
25GB quality exact the same.
The the thing is , we cannot enjoy special feature & digital copy.
The burning software consist of option to compress / remove which they remove certain features to allow the quality of the movie remains.
An average blu ray movie size will 30GB ++ and 3D movie will be 40GB++
So i reckon buy blu ray movies from speedy during their clearance sale.
Bought Transformers movies 3D version 2 for 100. Good deal.
Or if you’re IT savvy with movie creating hobby , you may burn your blu ray movies on own.
Another alternative Amazon site that you can consider is Amazon UK… http://www.amazon.co.uk. They ship from the UK and the shipping cost is much less than from the US. And VAT (like our GST) is deducted at checkout. However, choices are limited to Region-free titles as UK falls under Region B (Malaysia is under Region A). Use http://www.blu-ray.com to check the region for UK-released titles or any other countries before buying. You will be surprised how much cheaper SOME of the titles can be compared to buying from the US. I only buy when there are big price drops or sales…. http://www.blu-ray.com can help you track the prices as well as looking for bargains. Cheers.
