I just received an interesting info that something is cooking in one of the private medical college in Klang Valley. It seems that this medical college accepted 236 students for 2010 intake when they are only allowed to take a maximum of 150 students! Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) has issued a warning to this medical school to either remove this extra 86 students or face derecognition. Thus 86 students are advised either to switch discipline, transfer to another university or rejoin next intake of 2011!!! you can view some info from these blogs: http://paulineng91.blogspot.com or http://nazirahkamil.blogspot.com/2011/01/very-tragic-ending-of-2010.html.
I have said this many times, private medical colleges are just here to make money, period! I can assure you that NONE of the private medical colleges including some public medical colleges have enough full-time lecturers to even take more than 50 students! On paper, the figures are manipulated by including part-time lecturers as well as consultants from the attached government hospitals. I still feel that medical education should never be commercialised. In most developed countries, all medical colleges are public universities and their standards are maintained by regular accreditation from their respective medical councils. Unfortunately, in this Bolehland, everything is possible. You can rent a few shop lots and start a medical school as long as you have enough cables to pull…………………….. God bless!
I felt sorry for them… ==”
I would sue the college for pain and suffering. Maybe a class action suit?
Ya….you see so many lecturers in the college faculty team. Most are visiting lecturers. Most of them come only a few times but their name will be displayed forever in the list…..
I’m actually pleasantly surprised that the MMC is doing something about it. When are they gonna go after the other medical schools that have a bad student teacher ratio? Or those that lie about theirs!
wait and see until some politicians get involved. MMC will just keep their mouth shut!
Dr. Pagalavan, like that those who rely on locally trained doctors sure die!
Especially those who have no choice but to put their faith in public hospitals or clinics!
Can something be done to correct this situation before the abyss becomes deeper.
hi Dr. Pagalavan.
for ur information, CUCMS did not know that they were allowed to take only 150 students for the intake of 2010.
hope that u did not make any negative statement here regarding this issue. we still working out to solve this problem.
Dear Nazirah,
I think you very naive to believe what the university told you. I have worked in a private medical school before. The MMC has certain guidelines on the student: lecturer ratio and this is given to all medical schools. Thus the number of student intake depends on the number of lecturer.
So, the university is well aware of the total number of students that they should take. They would have taken 236 students based upon their profit ratio and hoping the number of lecturers will increase as well.
What your college is undergoing now has happened to IMU and Melaka Manipal before. So there is no excuse!
Thanks Dr for your concerns..
Btw, what had happened to IMU and MMMC? They are still working until now.
they somehow manage to reduce their numbers by sending the excess numbers to their twinning colleges. Remember, both these colleges have twinning program.
IMU’s local programme holds 50-70 students per intake.
Hi Dr.Pagavalan,
Im studying in russia now, am in my 2nd year…
Dont you think our government should implement a system as such we have here?
For example,
from pad-fak (pre-med) until our 3rd year, each class is conducted by 1 lecturer with the lecturer to student ratio never exceeding 1:8 (my group, 1:7!)
as for our clinical? years (4-6), the ratio is increased to 1:10/15….
How is it in Malaysia?
ps. I’ve heard recently they are making it compulsory for all russian graduates starting next year or so to take an entry exam? Is this true? If so, does this really mean that we ( the future russian grads) are ‘ranked’ as those coming from unrecognized universities? ie Taiwan?
Thanks in advance for you reply!
Malaysian Medical Council do have similar ratio but most colleges are not monitored closely by MMC in Malaysia, that is the problem!
I am not sure when they are going to introduce the entrance exams but it will apply for all graduates, unless they just derecognise certain medical schools in Rusia.
mr palagan sir, thanks for sharing all kinds of vital information dat is mostly needed by the future doctors. may i have ur permission to copy out all of ur info for further references. thank you.
no problem. You can share all the information especially my ” For Future Doctors series” under education page.
Yes, you are right. All private medical colleges starts off well with adequate student: lecturer ratio. The problem comes later when they need to look at their profit margin. Without an increase in the number of students, they will never make profit. Most medical schools only breaks even after about 5-6 years, thus it is important for them to keep increasing the number of students. Unfortunately, due to the large number of medical schools in Malaysia, the college will never be able to maintain the lecturer ratio. This is where the problem arises! This is happening in most private medical colleges. It is not ” some party”, it is the university. It is a business entity, whatever said and done.
FYI, JPA do send scholars to some of the local private medical schools, including IMU, Melaka Manipal, Monash, Newcastle, Penang Medical College. So, CUCMS is not the only one. Trust me, I worked with a well known private medical college before and I know how they think. They will calculate the number of students based on their profit and not lecturer ratio.
Yes again, you are right. The “certain party” is the business man who is running the college. Almost all medical colleges/ private institutions are run by businessman. The lecturers are not to be blamed for this.
dear sir,
if it is ok with u, could u please delete both of my comments?
pondering upon it, i find myself not wise to be commenting as such.
