The Malaysian education system has been deteriorating since the mid-eighties when politicians started to get involved. Education should never be politicised. Unfortunately, our politicians decided to influence the minds of our youngsters for political gain.
Thus, our education system has become a laughing-stock of the world. Below I list some of my post on the state of our education system in the country.

hi doctor, i’m intan physio same place
your hosp columbia 🙂
haha, wonder how you got to my blog?
Doctor, may I seek some advise from you for my education purposes?
of course , you can. you can email me at pagal72@gmailcom
i will surely recommended your website to my friends… honest and daring 🙂
Wondered why our grads from Russia/ Ukraine are of poor quality. “Since the visit of the Malaysian governmental agents in 2002, they were able to obtain regular government contract students from Malaysia.. with the price of about $10,000 per student (compare it with a 500 Rouble tuition price for russians or the $2,000 per foreign student).
They therefore were pressured by regular visits of the Malaysian Embassy after a few deaths to better the Malaysian student’s situation. For that matter SAMAN, had FINALLY rennovated the dorms and told the teaching staff to be more ‘lenient’ to the students.. meaning.. ‘ just give them good grades and make them happy’. I got this peice from another forum.
If you come to Russia and study in Russian it is great. Their books are great, they are detailed and the teachers know this material well. My advise will be if you want to study in Russia study in Russian language, you will receive a truly world class education.
Hi, doctor… Im a Diploma In Pharmacy graduate… I applied for the post of Pharmacy Assistant at Columbia Hospital in Nusajaya but they told me that there’s no vacancy for the moment… It is not only in this hospital but all the hospitals in Johor Bahru… Tried applying online at other states but to no avail too… Is it possible for doctor to give me some suggestions on what to do next as Im still unemployed since the day of my graduation (23/04/2011)…
Thank you…
You can try some GP clinics. There are not many private hospitals in JB. Yes, if I am not mistaken, our hospital is full at the moment. You can try applying for Columbia Asia Setapak which will be opening in few months time.
Hi, good evening, Come across this blog while i am looking for : trainee lecturer programmed in medical school”.

I am thinking which one should i proceed ?? Can you give me some advise? at the same time, if i want to pursue study in anaesthesiology, which one, either FANZCA or singapore M.Med (anaesthesiology) is better?
thank you very much
hi Dr, im SONIA (I am currently a 2nd yr student of Bachelor of biomedical science UKM)…. Recently, I thought of changing wht im studying now to (Bachelor in nursing in UKM)..
whn is was still a kid I alws had a wish to help n treat the ppl in countries like palestin, Iraq n help unfortunate ppl .. ..dats is why, whn I was a kid , my ambition was I wnted to be doctr..but whn the times comes,I didn’t managed to get into a medical course n was given biomedical science instead ..
Is not tht I don’t like my course, i love subjects being thought… but in terms of job prospect , thr is no much job opportunities for us here in MALAYSIA…MANY of my senior’s ended up wit a job which is far frm wht thy learn,n our course don’t dealing with patients n most of the time, we r in labs..but i love dealing with patients!!!!
recently, thinking abt what im gg to work in the nxt 2 yrs,tht worries me to the max..i don’t think the degree tht im learning now is gg to giv me the satisfaction tht I want in life (thts is helping ppl in a medical means)..n to archieve it, NURSING can be a bettr choice..i juz realize this fact tht,if to compare, betwn a doc and a nurse, a nurse is more closer to the patient.. in know, I hv may hv realized it quite late, but still I think its not too late to change..i dnt wnt to regret for the rest of my whole life doing things tht I don’t like..
bcoz of this, I started searching information about nursing…. I found tht in the west countries, there have nursing as a second carrier thro :Accelerated BSN which is nursing programs for students who already have a Bachelor’s Degree or even a Master’s Degree in a field other than Nursing. These programs, which are often of shorter length than generic programs, are ideal for individuals who are looking to do something more meaningful with the education that they already have, or for those who have graduated college and found that their degree does not afford as many opportunities as they had hoped.. BUT WE DON’T HAVE THIS IN MALAYSIA GOVERMNT UNIVERSITIES.
So, Dr, wht do u think, wht should I do?? Is it wise for me to change wht im doing now, to NURSING(4yrs)…. Coz im alrdy in my 2nd year nw.. I badly need some advice..
plz, I hope tht I can hear frm u soon..tq..
The problem in Malaysia is that it does not matter whether you have degree in nursing or diploma in nursing, the job is the same and the salary will be the same. Unless you join as a tutor in nusing colleges but saying that, without experience you can’t teach. They do have higher grade for nurses with degree but the number of post are limited.
Your intention are nobel but you can procede to do nursing if you are interested. The only problem wil be getting a job later on.
Dear Sonia ,
Bless your kind soul ,but the reality is, there are many nurses by the hundreds ,mind you who are still jobless after a year .In the current hospital I work in there is a severe shortage of nurses , but being a well recognized hospital they do not wish to just hire nurses out of desperation .Further more they would only hire graduates from a very selected few colleges which are well established and has been for years .
They would not even bother to go through any applications from certain “barred” colleges they do not favor.
The nursing prospect overseas is good but in order to get there one will need at least 5 years of hospital experience. But how does one get the experience when no one wants to hire them ?
During my time there was a severe shortage and the hospitals were desperate to grab on to anyone they can get , now the situation is reversed ! and they can choose to be picky .
But if you feel that this is your calling then by all means go ahead but make sure you are from a reputable college or have a job secured for you before you decide to jump ship .
Dear Dr Pagavalan,
Im currently serving as 2nd year MO in gov hosp. Things have become very realistic after i got married and have kids. Need to work so hard n do lots of locums to support my kids. im feeling very insecure with the future of this med line as every tom dick n harry can become a doc (im a local gov uni grad)..feel so frustrated… I used to be as naive as tose med students out there at a point of time, but bare in mind that everything needs money. What do u think of dip in dermatology + dip in aesthetic medicine ? Hows the future prospects? But it seems tat many ppl is doin the same thing. Thanks for ur guidance Dr Pagavalan.
Yes, that is what I am saying all this while. Reality will only hit when you start to work.
Many GPs are doing this 2 diplomas for survival. Diploma in dermatology does not make you a dermatologist. Many do this to start cosmetic services in their clinic.
Thank you for ur kind reply Dr Pagavalan,
yea i fully understood that dip in dermatology is just for ” cari makan”…. u’l need MRCP/ masters in Int med in order to proceed with sub in dermatology.
Btw,I would like to ask ur opinion regarding emergency medicine. What do u think of Masters in Emergency Medicine..its quite a new field in Msia. What is your opinion regarding Emergency Medicine future prospect in PRIVATE hospitals????? But i have heard of one or two private hosps which i know of hiring emergency physicians to run the emergency dept.
With the current scenario where most of the ED at private hospitals are run by MOs, do u think all these MOs will gradually be replaced by emergency physicians in the near future???
Unfortunately in Msia, i wouldnt dare to say all, but MAJORITY of the ppl’s mindset regarding emergency dept is only a place where all the underperformed MO being dumped,or a place for u to “lepak” and relax, or just a temporary dept for u to “float” while awaiting for the vacancy of your desired dept.
It is somehow considered a dept which is inferior to other major disciplines.
Whatever the mistakes are, ED is always to be blamed.
So, Dr Paga, how would u advise me,as i have spent 1 year in ED,to jump or not to jump out from ED, if i would ask u to judge based on the future prospect of Emergency physician , both in private and gov hospitals set up.
Out of frustration, and with the lesser oppotunities to go for post grad studies, i think some docs, probably including me, will just open up a kopitiam, as the number of GP clinics are now more than kopitiam…..dont u agree with me???? haha…
Thank you very much and hope to hear from u soon.
Frankly speaking I don’t think there is much prospect for emergency specialist in private hospitals. They will just end up as glorified MO with MO salary. This is because the way private hospitals are run in this country. Consultants in private hospitals are self employed, meaning they are renting a clinic inside the hospital and seeing their patients. Basically a GP type clinic in a hospital. How does a emergency physician fit into this type of practise. Definately, the resident consultants will not allow these emergency physicians to do anything more then a bare minimal for patient who walks into the emergency department. I know 1 or 2 hospitals in KL who hired emergency physicians but most of these physicians are rotting away and some even left back to government service.
Yes, many may end up opening a kopitiam, BTW you can probably make more money and become more successfull. I know a few who did this and became millionares. There are also many GPs and Specialist who are venturing into food business as they know their clinic income is not sustainable in the future.
i had completed Diploma in Business Management.I don know which courses have better job opportunity in another 5 yrs or more& which private university in best to study. Is it study at unisel at same course or find some other private university.I don have any idea.In case if i future my degree in law, Human Resource or Bachelor in Business Management, which private university is good&have job placement? Is this degree have highly demand in future&earn better salary for fresh graduate?
I am not very sure about this as I am not from arts stream. What I know is that there are too many graduates of Business Admin for sure. What about accountancy or IT?
how about building survey?, it is so new in Malaysia…. job opportunity in future?
still good. Even architexture is still needed in Malaysia
Dear Dr. Pagalavan
Ve a question. Doing UG degree in medicine in China is worth it.
At the moment, none of the universities in China is recognised in malaysia. They may recognise a few, soon but not sure which ones. Frankly, if you can’t speak Chinese, I would not encourage.
Dear Dr. Pagalavan If a foreign MBBS degree(e.g. shanghai jiaotong uni) is recognised by our MMC, would it be also recognised by our MQA and JPA. Thank You.
yes. What is important is MMC recognition. However, MQA recognition is of no value if MMC does not recognise your degree.
hi doc… may i know who is mrmeaner sardonicus rabin..?
No idea

Hello Dr. Pagalavan:
Can you give me some opinion on pursing a MBBS ? I just finished my SPM exams recently. I am at crossed road. It’s better to continue my pre-university course or going for STPM ? Shall I go for Medical degree in Russia or India ? It;’s more cheaper than study in local private uni as I am not come from a rich family. I am looking for your reply. Thanks Dr.!
PLease read all my post under “For Future Doctor” page and decide. Ask yourself “what you want to do medicine” . Never do medicine for wrong reasons. Getting a dgree is very easy nowadays BUT are you getting proper training to become a good doctor?
Very true.
The recent trend on the rise among some of the new medical graduates is to not even join housemanship or to quit during a few days or weeks of working to join insurance or pharma company, or worse: bogus ”medical” companies.
These companies, usually registering themselves under Kementerian Dalam Negeri or Perdagangan as ”supplements”. Modus operandi can be from MLM or health screening booth. Sometimes basic lab investigations are used as basis to ”suggest” their products (they will deny the term ”consultation”). Now they are starting to employ unemployed nursing diploma holders, quitting house officers, ignorant medical officers or those unemployed but with medical or ”alternative medicine” degrees as ”medical staff”. These doctors, at times far away from the notch, are given bogusly grandiose names such as medical consultants, or just doctors, wear medical apparel and stethoscopes to give the impression that the product is of modern mainstream medicine.
A pathetic but effective approach, deceiving the blind and ignorant public.
Like garbage it attract flies despite being actually foul.
That is why when you think you want to do medicine, do some research first how we work and what the job is about. Do you want to end up like that?
Chasing a childhood dream and then realize you could not make the notch and ending up a bogus doctor. A cheap charlatan fake. An half-baked imitation.
A disgrace and an affront to actual dedicated doctors.
Think wisely and thoroughly first. Please.
hello doctor. is there any degree that related to the way people think / how the human think / human behaviour or other term that related to that kind of things?
Psychology
Behavioural Science, traditionally taught within Psychology degrees. It is also covered as a smaller component of Sociology degrees. Today, there are Universities that offer BSc in Behavioural Science itself which to a traditionalist like me, seems frankly bizarre. What does soneone with a degree in BS do after graduating? But I guess when I ask such a question, I revert to my Far Eastern mentality (ie: a degree is for earning a future living and not just for getting pissed for 3-4 years while finding oneself)!
What do u mean by traditionally taught? I’m quiet interested in the word ‘traditionalist’ that you just mention. Jon J, can I have your e-mail please?
*quite
Dear Dr Pagalavan
what is your opinion about degree in physiotherapy?& what about its opportunity to be served under governmental/private hospitals?
There are too many diploma holders in physiotherapy who are looking for a job. The chances of a degree holder to get a job will be slimmer as your job scope is not very much different but the hospital will need to pay you higher. University hospitals and bigger private hospitals may hire you.
hello doctor… may i seek some advice on my education purposes??
OK
i am a spm leaver… my results are 6 A’s 1B and 2 C+’s…. however, my C+ is in my physics and add maths…. later, after finishing my degree in medicine, will i have any problems while registering for my license??
hello doctor…. may i seek some advice on my education purpose, please??
hello doctor.
can you write an article about the pros of choosing medicine in the future?
i’m feeling a bit down by my decision now that i’ve read what you wrote 😦
Even though I have not written an artcile just taking about pros, but I had mentioned it many times in this blog. The only pro: treating patients and seeing them leaving the ward. The satisfaction of treating patients. The challenge of trying to get a diagnosis and for surgeon: doing corrective surgeries.
Doctor,
Your articles are such an eye-opener. Please continue enlightening medicos like me through your articles. They certainly serve a good cause.
Lots of gratitude.
Good evening doctor,
I am a bpharm student from LaTrobe university,Aus (4+0)
I often do reading on malaysian healthcare and i came across ur blogs on numerous times.
Taking into consideration that i would have to submit my research proposal in 3months time for my bpharm hons project,
i would jus like an opinion from you.
AN EXPLORATIVE STUDY ON PHARMACIST-CONDUCTED PATIENT EDUCATION AND COUNSELING
FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF PHARMACISTS IN SELANGOR
I would love to hear your opinion and comments also on its relevance in Malaysia, on the title n survey study which i plan to conduct.
Also if and opinions on how i can further improve my study..
Hope to hear frm you soon.
Thank you doctor.

You are asking research advice on a blog? You need to do groundwork and talk to a Malaysian/Selangor pharmacist to get advice on the subject matter you are researching. Email someone. Or phone them. With regards to research technique using surveys, you should be getting advice from your supervisor. Or even better – do a literature search on survey techniques. Decide first whether you want to do a qualitative or quantitative survey.
Greetings doctor,
Im currently doing my A-Levels. Im planing to do medicine at the Moscow State University. Would you recommend? From what I heard, they say that it is fully recognized by the WHO, MMC, MOHE and even SMC (Spore Medical Council). Could you please advise me on that doctor.
Thank you,
Yovindra Kanezin
Yes, it is recognised but I have seen good ones and bad ones from this university. It all depends how motivated you are in learning and speaking Russian language
Yovindra,
I don’t think Singapore Medical Council recognises Moscow State University.
Click to access Second%20Schedule%20-%20Registrable%20Basic%20Medical%20Qualifications.pdf
Thank you doc,
Is there job guarantee for the graduates from Moscow State University? It is said that this university is better ranking in the world compared to our Public Universities/ Local Private Universities? Is it true? Will I be accepted into good universities when I further my masters or specialization,
Kindly advise doctor,
Thank you,
Yovindra Kanezin
There is no such thing as job guarantee in the future. Preference will be given to local grads and government sponsored students. Ranking is not important.
Whether you will accepted into a university for master , depends on your performance as a doctor and not basic degree.
i have notice your wordings and the sentences constructed had very vague of circumscription and low credibility, as you never mention your sources and bring it by i heard, it is said
be in mind, don’t conned by those university’s sales man and website, check it with QS ranking and you know the truth as if RUSSIA UNIVERSITY medical students better than other? i doubt that truth, i being encounter one angry and rude mother who defends her child being into moscow university as that the first in the world, because she is poor, unable to send to UK US top school and her son not able academically successful to get scholarship, so in the midst of high ego and low self-esteem contradicted thus she choose to “believe”, so kind pathetic is it? so, get the fact up, russia university HAS no ranking and getting bad reputation in reality in government hospital as low class student with even no biology can enrolled !
Dear doc,
What about doing a Medical Degree programme at the Wuhan Medical University, China ? Is it recommended? The tutorial fees and the living cost is very much affordable. Taught in English, recognized by the WHO, MOHE, MMC, UNESCO, EU and SMC. i guess it is still new for Malaysia. Will it be a good choice ?
Thank you doctor
As far as I know, Wuhan university is NOT recognised by MMC. Only 2 China university are recognised by MMC based on latest list over here
WHO/Unesco recognition is of NO value!
I would not recommend. Furthermore, teaching in English does not mean anything as you need to know chinese for your day to day practical training in communicating with patients.
Recently there are a lot of news in local Chinese news papers showing the newly STPM/Uni Foundation chinese graduates who want to be doctors not getting the medicine spots they wish. I’m like what’s the big deal. Feel like telling them medicine is not all roses and there a lot of greener pastures other than medicine. Like if they are really good in biology and chemistry, they can vernture into dentistry/pharmacy/biotech. If they want to touch lives they can study psychology and counselling and be counselors or school teachers. If they want to be glorified in society then they can join political parties and help a lot more people then they could just doing medicine. If they want to earn big bucks then then do biotech/biomolecular science (and such) and be good in it and possibly invent new patterns one day (though this must be in overseas coz Msia don’t have the good infrastructure in this yet). I don’t understand their mentality yeah?
I’m a Chinese by the way, just in case people hate me for saying about Chinese only.
Without touching on racial stereotypes, there are definitely Malaysian parents who want their kids to do medicine due to the perception that it brings status and wealth, and should therefore secure their child’s future. It used to be true even as recently as 15 years ago (i.e. starting med school 15 years ago), but not so much so now and definitely not in Malaysia. As someone else said in this blog, doing medicine in Malaysia is like Air Asia …. “now everyone can fly”.
If you are really good, then you will be successful no matter what you do.
It’s public perception. That is what I am trying to educate in this blog but people don’t believe what I am saying! They believe that ALL top scorers must do medicine without knowing anything about medicine!
Yup. And in Singapore those who are really good in biology and chemistry venture into the fields of life sciences and neuroscience research, only those who couldn’t get into these cutting edge sciences drop into the field of medicine.
Dr. Paga, I would like to ask your advice on choosing which medical school to enrol in. I am a sponsored JPA scholar and I am deciding between NUMed and IMU (5 years local). Thank you for your help.
I would prefer IMU
May I ask why Dr. Paga? Because I have heard from a current student in there that IMU’s intake is very overcrowded and they have minimal lectures. I am worried this may affect my studying. However, I may be wrong and I am open to criticism and your advice on the matter. Thank you once again for your help.
Most universities now are doing away with lectures. Medicine is about practical training and not lectures. Newcastle is new and being in Johor, I can tell you what is happening inside but I can’t say it openly. Enough to say that there are only less than 5 Malaysian lecturers in Newcastle.
And the rest of the lecturers aren’t from the mother campus too?
there are a few but less than 10%(the figure agreed upon)

Nothing new
Dear Doctor , I’m Dinesh Gill , Currently I’m Doing My Form 5 , Where I’ll Be Sitting For My SPM in November , I’m 100 % Sure Of Pursuing My Dream To Be A Doctor In Future , As An Early Preparation I’ve Actually Decided 2 Plans For My Future ,My Parents Are Able To Support My Studies Financially , Thus I’ve Decided To Either Start My Foundation In January 2015 With My Forecast Results in Manipal Melaka , And Continue My MBBS There , Which Will Be The Twinning Program Of 2 1/2 In Manipal , India And 2 1/2 In Manipal Malacca , or Wait For My SPM Results , Find For A Placement Agency , Do My Pre-u Program And Continue MD in Kursk State Medical University Russia . Doctor . I Really Can’t Make My Mind. I’m So Confused On Deciding Where Should I Pursue My Dream , I Was Even Told That doing McDh In Australia Is A Good Choice , But What Bout The Fees and Program Structure ? Could Help Me By Giving Me Some Relevant Informations And Advise On Where I Can Continue My Studies From The 3 Places I’ve Stated Above , Waiting For Yr Reply , Sincerely Gill !
Always wait for your SPM results. You need to have the minimum requirement to do medicine. Forget about Russia!!
I am not very sure about McDH.
hai sir,my name is zaman, i just grad from russia,n recognized by malaysia. i wan to know, is it possible if i do my housemanship at india n thn come back to malaysia? will malaysia medical council accept it? i decide to do in india because of overflow doctors in our country. can u advise me regarding tis matter?
thank u sir.
As far as I know, housemanship in India is not recognised in Malaysia.
hello sir..Im an indian mbbs holder….my husband is an ortho m.o.in Malaysia….Doing masters in ortho in India ..is it recognised here?
NO Master’s program from India recognised in Malaysia. However, if you have more than 5 years experience as a specialist after Master’s, you may be considered as a specialist.
thank u sir for ur reply
one more query sir………….is there going to be any malay language exam for foreigners to enter housemanship ? is it confirmed ? if so how about the pattern of exam …any idea/ suggestion sir?
Generally, foreigners will not get housemanship in Malaysia unless you are married to a Malaysian. As far as I know, no Malay language exams as you will be on contract basis. If your basic degree is not recognised by MMC, then you need to sit for the MQE exams
Dear Dr Pagalavan, I have a personal problem I would like to discuss with you as I respect your opinion, would you please leave me your email address? You can use my case as an example for your future blog posts..

please check at http://www.mmc.gov.my
I am surprised to see that Lomonosov Moscow State University is not in the 2nd schedule of MMC.This university is the only one listed in QS World university ranking 2015/2016 under the subject of medicine for Russia.
Each country have their own way of recognising degrees.
Hello Dr.Pagalavan, I am Malaysian and just recently graduated from an unrecognised medical university, and planning to take MQE this year. Can you give some advice on how to prepare for the exam? Thank you.
That depends on which university you are allocated.
Doctor, I am am A-level graduate with full A* . I dont hv a scholarship because I did badly in my spm. I manage to get into almost every of the private medical school in Malaysia. My choices are narrowed to Monash university Malaysia and Ucsi. Monash is way better in teaching and facilities but the fee is pretty higher than the rest. Ucsi is much cheaper in the other hand. My family income is only around rm5000 per month. From ur blog, it clearly shows that the job opportunities have nothing to do with quality of medical university right? How is Ucsi in ur opinion as I really want to be a good doctor and is willing to go to rural area to work just to help out. How about if I want to specialise in future? Does Ucsi or Monash graduate stands any advantage ? e.g lower study duration , can specialise in uk,Australia. Please share ur opinion and I really appreciate it.

I presume , you are talking about medicine? My personal advise, never get married till you finish housemanship!
Hi Dr Pagalavan, I personally find the information vis-a-vis the realities of being a doctor and the future of doctors in Malaysia in your blog extremely enlightening.
Recently, I’ve received the NUS ASEAN scholarship to study medicine at NUS and a full tuition scholarship to study medicine at HKU. Although I’m super grateful to have the dilemma of choosing, I find myself torn and unable to decide between these two schools.
They are both recognized by the MMC, and HKU by SMC. For NUS, I will be bonded for 6 years excluding the 1st year residency training; For HKU, it’s bond-less.
I’m required to make a decision by 26 May (pretty soon), so I’d love to hear your advice and input. Thank you so much in advance.
Both are OK but since NUS is bonded with no guarantee of residency, I would prefer HKU as you can still apply to Singapore to work. If I am not mistaken HKU is also recognised in sone other countries.
Thank you Dr. for your reply. I’ve checked out the recognition of the medical degree from HKU. HKU is recognized by Australia’s AMC while HKCP postgraduate qualifications are actually recognized by GMC.
May I ask if the residency (which includes specialist and sub-specialist training) in Singapore (introduced only in 2010), which is accredited by ACGME-I, is recognized by other countries (i.e. USA, Malaysia)? I tried finding the relevant information online but to no avail.
For Australia, all graduates outside Australia need to sit and pass AMC exams. Please check on that. As for Singapore, I am not sure whether the training is recognised in US. For Malaysia, it will be on case by case basis.
Just checked with a friend from Singapore. Residency training in Singapore is not recognised in US
Ok thank you so much Dr. 🙂
I have a question to Dr. Pagalawan and all. Monash and numed are both well established unis in Malaysia. Which is better, Numed or monash University? Can you pls enlighten me with some advice. Thank you.
Greetings Dr. My daughter wants to do MBBS. She is not sure which university to choose. Our options are – manipal, Aimst, cyberjaya university. Please advice
Any of it will do but cyber jaya seem to have a better reputation since it is semi government.
